Clinical utility of digital technologies in Parkinson's disease.

Digital health technologies (DHTs) are on the verge of changing treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). This narrative overview article describes DHTs that are already used or in development, focusing on technologies available in Germany and on their clinical utility. Examples include applications that are primarily used by patients, i.e., tools for patient education and empowerment, but also stand-alone interventions improving clinical outcomes including motor and non-motor symptoms. In Germany, these patient-centered DHTs fall under the HTA framework of digital health applications (DIGA). DHT

Developing digital health technologies for frontotemporal degeneration.

Frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) is a rare neurodegenerative disease in which patients can present with cognitive, behavioral, motor, and speech impairment. Currently, there are no approved therapies available to slow or halt disease progression. Detection and monitoring of patient symptoms is challenging for this heterogeneous disease and has negatively impacted progress in FTD clinical trials. Rapid technological advancements can promote the development of digital health technologies (DHTs) capable of capturing even the most subtle clinical impairments. DHTs are computing platforms being de

Insights on Training and Certification in Digital Health Technologies.

Digital health is growing rapidly with several technologies aiming to revolutionize the healthcare domain. In this context, the need for training and certification programs becomes imperative. Although such programs do exist, they need to be further expanded and enhanced to cover the pressing needs of the current landscape. In this paper, we describe insights on training and certification in digital health technologies as these were obtained through a related workshop. We outline the profiles and the expertise of the workshop's participants, the main gaps in knowledge and competencies, the gov

Pharmacological, Technological, and Digital Innovative Aspects in Rhinology.

Innovation refers to the introduction of a product, a process, a service or a solution resulting in something new or significantly improved compared to the already available alternatives. In the clinical context, it is strictly related to the identification of a new added value in terms of quality, therapeutic efficacy and safety. Over the years several innovative approaches have been introduced in the clinical practice, revolutionizing the treatment and the management of important rhinologic conditions. Innovative tools, including new drugs, biomaterials, and mobile applications seem to be ab

Digital technology anxiety and teacher digital literacy development: a longitudinal examination of cognitive appraisal mechanisms.

This study examines how teacher digital technology anxiety influences digital literacy development through cognitive appraisal mechanisms. Employing a three-wave longitudinal design spanning one academic year, we surveyed 1,247 in-service teachers across urban, suburban, and rural schools in China at six-month intervals. Cross-lagged panel modeling revealed that digital technology anxiety significantly predicted subsequent decreases in digital literacy development, with this relationship demonstrating temporal precedence over reverse pathways. Mediation analyses grounded in cognitive appraisal

Digital Health Technology Use by Vietnamese Americans: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital health technologies (DHTs), including mobile health (mHealth) apps and online medical records, are increasingly being used to support self-management and communication with health care professionals among the general population across the United States. However, few studies have explored whether cultural, privacy, and sociodemographic factors may influence DHT adoption among Vietnamese Americans specifically. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to explore DHT use, barriers to adoption, and their associations with social determinants, such as age, sex, social suppor

Using Digital Technology to Stay Connected With Friends After Aphasia.

PURPOSE: Digital domains are becoming increasingly important in creating and sustaining relationships. The purpose of this study was to understand the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in maintaining friendships for people with aphasia. Understanding how people with aphasia use ICT (e.g., smartphones, social media platforms) to stay connected is critical to developing components of clinical interventions focused on social relationships. METHOD: Data were collected from a larger qualitative research project and included semistructured interviews about friendship maintenanc

Retrospective analysis of digital health technology effectiveness in cardiac rehabilitation.

Digital health technologies have enhanced cardiac rehabilitation by enabling remote monitoring, personalized feedback and increased patient engagement. This retrospective study analyzed four years of medical records from patients using digital platforms, wearables and teleconsultations. Those using digital tools showed higher adherence, better functional gains and improved risk factor control than those in traditional care. Remote monitoring allowed for earlier detection of clinical changes and timely treatment adjustments, reducing hospital readmissions. Data highlight digital health's potent

Optical Diagnostics of the Maxillary Sinuses by Digital Diaphanoscopy Technology.

The work is devoted to the development of a scientific and technical basis for instrument implementation of a digital diaphanoscopy technology for the diagnosis of maxillary sinus inflammatory diseases taking into account the anatomical features of patients (differences in skin structure, skull bone thickness, and sinus size), the optical properties of exercised tissues, and the age and gender characteristics of patients. The technology is based on visualization and analysis of scattering patterns of low-intensity radiation as it passes through the maxillary sinuses. The article presents the e

Digital PCR-An Emerging Technology with Broad Applications in Microbiology.

BACKGROUND: The PCR and its variant, quantitative PCR (qPCR), have revolutionized the practice of clinical microbiology. Continued advancements in PCR have led to a new derivative, digital PCR (dPCR), which promises to address certain limitations inherent to qPCR. CONTENT: Here we highlight the important technical differences between qPCR and dPCR, and the potential advantages and disadvantages of each. We then review specific situations in which dPCR has been implemented in clinical microbiology and the results of such applications. Finally, we attempt to place dPCR in the context of other e

Digital PCR: a new technology for diagnosis of parasitic infections.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic infections are responsible for a significant burden of disease worldwide as a result of international travel and immigration. More accurate diagnostic tools are necessary in support to parasite control and elimination programmes in endemic regions as well as for rapid case detection in non-endemic areas. Digital PCR (dPCR) is a powerful technology with recent applications in parasitology. AIMS: This review provides for the first time an overview of dPCR as a novel technology applied to detection of parasitic infections, and highlights the most relevant potential benefits

Clinical applications of digital twin technology in In Vitro Fertilisation.

BACKGROUND: Digital twin technology, originating from aerospace and manufacturing industries, has emerged as a transformative tool in healthcare. In vitro fertilisation (IVF) faces persistent challenges including suboptimal embryo selection, unpredictable treatment outcomes, and limited personalisation of protocols. Despite advances in assisted reproductive technology, existing literature exhibits fragmentation: artificial intelligence applications in embryo selection, ovarian stimulation, and endometrial assessment have been developed independently without systematic integration into comprehe

Integration of Digital Twin Technology in Orthodontics: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital twin technology (DTT) is an emerging concept in healthcare enabling real-time patient and process simulations and predictive analytics that enhance personalized treatment and clinical decision-making. Orthodontics, being a comprehensive subject involving technicalities associated with diagnosis and treatment planning, the specific role of DTT, remains underexplored. This gap presents a crucial opportunity to harness its power to create dynamic virtual models for truly personalized and data-driven care. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to map the extent and type of evidence avai

Modernizing the Staging of Parkinson Disease Using Digital Health Technology.

Due to the complicated nature of Parkinson disease (PD), a number of subjective considerations (eg, staging schemes, clinical assessment tools, or questionnaires) on how best to assess clinical deficits and monitor clinical progression have been published; however, none of these considerations include a comprehensive, objective assessment of all functional areas of neurocognition affected by PD (eg, motor, memory, speech, language, executive function, autonomic function, sensory function, behavior, and sleep). This paper highlights the increasing use of digital health technology (eg, smartphon
