Every intensive care patient is a potential organ donor. For preserving organs, an aggressive shock therapy and controlled volume adaptation using the alpha-blocker hydergine is necessary. Minimal therapy is not allowed until it is decided whether the patient will survive or will become an organ donor. A vasopressor therapy for normalisation of blood pressure must not be carried out. Renal function (30 ml per hour are sufficient) must be achieved by improving perfusion with alternating infusions of dextran or hydroxyethyl starch and Ringer solution. Dopamine should not be used. This work comparatively studies the effects of dihydroergocristine, timolol and pilocarpine on intraocular pressure and pupil diameter in conscious rabbits. Intraocular pressure was measured by applanation tonometry and the pupil diameter by a photographic technique. There are at least four phenomenologically different types of movement disorders that fall under the rubric of tardive dyskinesia: a) classical TD which is choreatic in speed of movement and stereotypic in pattern, b) tardive akathisia, c) withdrawal emergent syndrome, which presents as true chorea and d) tardive dystonia which presents with dystonic movement and postures. This paper reviews the main treatments of tardive dyskinesia. The drugs utilized have been considered according to their mechanism of action.

The intensity of vacuum suction used during filtration of cerebral membranes on glass fiber filters used in the assays of neurotransmitter receptors is a factor in determining the apparent extent of bound radioactivity. This is not related to protein loss during filtration at various speeds nor to rates of dissociation of various ligand-receptor complexes. It appears to be due to the failure of hydrophobic ligands on dry filters, to be readily removed by aqueous media. A means whereby the vacuum can be held constant is described and shown to eliminate this artifact.
