Intra-puparial development in Oestrus ovis (Diptera: Oestridae).

The phenology of intrapuparial development in Oestrus ovis L. is described, based on 302 specimens collected from the head cavities of goats and reared in the laboratory at a photoperiod of 12:12 (L:D) h and 32 and 16 degrees C. Dissection and histology of puparia at pupariation and at 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 66, and 72 h after pupariation and every day of the intra-puparial period showed that pupariation was achieved in approximately 12 h in heavily pigmented larvae (range, 2-46 h in postfeeding period). Larval-pupal apolysis began immediately after pupariation and was co

[Hematophagous diptera arbovirus vectors in Africa (author's transl)].

The authors, in a first part, show the general arthropods-viruses-vertebrates relationships and specially the different conditions of virus maintenance in the selvatic foci. Then they succinctly give the main characteristics of the vectors bioecology useful for understanding the epidemiology of arbovirus diseases of man and domestic animals. Thus diptera vectors of o'nyong-nyong and chikungunya fevers, yellow fever, dengue fever, Wesselsbron, Sindbis, and West Nile viruses, Rift Valley fever, sandfly fevers, bluetongue and african horsesickness are recorded. Lastly some attention is given to t

Causes and consequences of sex-chromosome turnovers in Diptera.

Sex-chromosome systems are highly variable across animals, but how they transition from one to another is not well understood. Diptera have undergone multiple sex-chromosome turnovers and expansions while maintaining their general chromosomal content, which makes them an ideal clade to study such transitions. We analyzed more than 100 dipteran whole-genome assemblies and identified 4 new lineages that underwent sex-chromosome turnover (in addition to the 5 previously reported). We find that the majority of turnovers happened in the group Schizophora, which tend to have fewer genes on Muller el

A role for flies (Diptera) in the transmission of Campylobacter to broilers?

Campylobacter is the leading cause of bacterial diarrhoeal disease worldwide, with raw and undercooked poultry meat and products the primary source of infection. Colonization of broiler chicken flocks with Campylobacter has proved difficult to prevent, even with high levels of biosecurity. Dipteran flies are proven carriers of Campylobacter and their ingress into broiler houses may contribute to its transmission to broiler chickens. However, this has not been investigated in the UK. Campylobacter was cultured from 2195 flies collected from four UK broiler farms. Of flies cultured individually,

The cytotaxonomy and morphotaxonomy of Simulium mengense (Diptera: Simuliidae).

Human onchocerciasis is hyper-endemic in south-western Cameroon and the island of Bioko. The vector on the island is the endemic 'Bioko' form of Simulium yahense. On the mainland, S. damnosum s.s., S. squamosum and S. mengense are recorded around Mount Cameroon but their contribution to transmission in the area is unclear. As elimination of onchocerciasis, through vector eradication, is a possibility on the island, it is important to be able to identify vector flies which might migrate to Bioko from the mainland. The morphologies of S. damnosum s.s. and S. squamosum are already well known. New

Detection of antibodies in blood meals of hematophagous Diptera.

Antibodies are detectable by an agglutination technique in the blood meals of hematophagous Diptera that are fed on laboratory and domestic animals infected with organisms of the Trypanosoma brucei subgroup. It is likely that both the antibody status and the identity of the animal fed on can be determined from the same blood meal from wild Diptera. The technique may be applicable to other infections for which sensitive serological tests are available.

Population genetics of neotropical Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

BACKGROUND: Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes can be found in almost every major city of Brazil and are vectors of filariasis and several arboviruses. Microsatellite markers have been widely used to uncover the genetic structure of various groups of insect populations. The aim of this study was to glimpse the genetic structure of Cx. quinquefasciatus in Brazil. METHODS: Nine populations were sampled across Brazil (one of them from a laboratory colony - COL) and another one from Argentina and process regarding the variability of six microsatellite loci. RESULTS: The analyzed loci revealed mod

Carbohydrate digestion in Lutzomyia longipalpis' larvae (Diptera - Psychodidae).

Lutzomyia longipalpis is the principal species of phlebotomine incriminated as vector of Leishmania infantum, the etiological agent of visceral leishmaniasis in the Americas. Despite its importance as vector, almost nothing related to the larval biology, especially about its digestive system has been published. The objective of the present study was to obtain an overview of carbohydrate digestion by the larvae. Taking in account that phlebotomine larvae live in the soil rich in decaying materials and microorganisms we searched principally for enzymes capable to hydrolyze carbohydrates present

Copulatory courtship song in Lutzomyia migonei (Diptera: psychodidae).

Lutzomyia migonei is a vector of leishmaniasis with a wide distribution in South America, which could favour population differentiation and speciation. Cryptic species of the Lutzomyia longipalpis complex, the widely distributed sand fly vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Latin America, have previously been shown to display distinct copulation songs. We found that Lu. migonei males also produce a song during copulation. This "lovesong" presents short trains (6-8 pulses) with an inter-pulse interval around 26 ms and is potentially involved in cryptic female choice and insemination success.

Wolbachia infections of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Old and New World phlebotomine sand fly species were screened for infection with Wolbachia, intracellular bacterial endosymbionts found in many arthropods and filarial nematodes. Of 53 samples representing 15 species, nine samples offour species were found positive for Wolbachia by polymerase chain reaction amplification using primers for the Wolbachia surface protein (wsp) gene. Five of the wsp gene fragments from four species were cloned, sequenced, and used for phylogenetic analysis. These wsp sequences were placed in three different clades within the arthropod associated Wolbachia (groups

Gelled diet for screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) mass production.

A rearing system based on a diet gelled with Water-Lock G-400, a synthetic superabsorbent (poly(2-propenamide-co-2-propenoic acid, sodium salt)) (WL), was compared with the standard rearing system (liquid diet suspended in acetate fibers) for the mass production of screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). The WL rearing system yielded 2% heavier pupae, 32% higher egg to pupa survival, and required 54% less diet and 88% less labor than the standard rearing system. Other advantages of the WL system include reduced susceptibility to suboptimal environmental conditions and labor practices a

Host feeding patterns of Connecticut mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae).

Blood-engorged Coquillettidia perturbans, Psorophora ferox, Culex, Culiseta, and Aedes mosquitoes were collected principally by sweep net from salt marsh and woodland habitats in Connecticut. Of the 570 mosquitoes tested, precipitin tests identified the origins of 517 blood meals and revealed distinct host feeding patterns. Aedes mosquitoes fed chiefly on mammals; A. abserratus, A. cantator, and A. vexans showed selectivity for cattle and (or) horses. A. cantator also obtained blood from avian hosts and, in some instances, showed mixed passerine-mammal blood meals. These findings increase the

Stress-Mediated Responses of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Larvae When Exposed to Metarhizium brunneum (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) and Toxorhynchites brevipalpis (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are capable of vectoring a wide range of diseases including dengue, yellow fever, and Zika viruses, with approximately half of the worlds' population at risk from such diseases. Development of combined predator-parasite treatments for the control of larvae consistently demonstrates increased efficacy over single-agent treatments, however, the mechanism behind the interaction remains unknown. Treatments using the natural predator Toxorhynchites brevipalpis and the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum were applied in the laboratory against Ae. aegypti larvae as b

Effectiveness of a permethrin-treated barrier and pour-on applications against Culicoides spp. (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) on a deer farm.

Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) and mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are important vectors of pathogens affecting ruminants. On deer farms, Culicoides species transmit bluetongue virus and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus, while mosquitoes can cause chronic stress and even exsanguination. We evaluated the effectiveness of the insecticide -InsectGuard (0.5% permethrin), applied as a barrier treatment and pour-on, to reduce mosquito and biting midge landings on deer in Martin County, Florida. Deer simulators baited with carbon dioxide and fitted with sticky cards were used

New world screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae): past, present and future.

The New World screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), is one of the most important parasites of livestock and wildlife in the Americas. Research conducted during the last 100 yr has formed the foundation of the most successful insect control program in the world: the NWS eradication program. The program eradicated NWS from North and Central America and established a biological barrier at the Isthmus of Panama in 2004 using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). Except for a brief incursion in the Florida Keys in 2016, the last case of NWS in the United States was in 1982. Since the e
