Colorado longitudinal twin study of reading disability.

The primary objectives of the present study are to introduce the Colorado Longitudinal Twin Study of Reading Disability, the first longitudinal twin study in which subjects have been specifically selected for having a history of reading difficulties, and to present some initial assessments of the stability of reading performance and cognitive abilities in this sample. Preliminary examination of the test scores of 124 twins with a history of reading difficulties and 154 twins with no history of reading difficulties indicates that over the 5- to 6-year interval between assessments, cognitive and

Barriers that further disablement: a study of survivors of polio.

This exploratory study of polio survivors was undertaken to clarify current level of function, comorbidity, and secondary conditions and to discover the relationships between perceived barriers to health, functional limitation, comorbidity, secondary conditions, and disability in a small convenience sample. Given the underrepresentation of research in the literature explaining the health status, perceived function, and barriers to health in this disabled population, a descriptive study with correlation was conducted. Thirty-one individuals living with the effects of polio were surveyed. Disabi

A demographic study of polydipsia in an institution for the intellectually disabled.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the prevalence of primary polydipsia in an Ontario institution for residents with developmental disabilities and to explore the associations of polydipsia with age, sex and level of mental retardation. METHOD: All 798 residents were screened for polydipsia using a behavioural questionnaire completed by caregivers. RESULTS: Thirty-three cases were detected: the prevalence among the mobile resident population (n = 660) was 5%. We found no association of polydipsia with age, sex, or level of mental retardation. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians should be aware of polydipsia because

A study of behavior modification for developmentally disabled children.

A tape-slide series, using a desensitization and modeling approach, was developed in order to prepare three- and four-year-old developmentally disabled children for an initial dental examination. The tape-slide series pleasantly describes what to expect during the first visit to the dental office. A clown and a four-year-old girl were used as models. Twenty-eight children participated in the study, divided into two groups: control and experimental. A requirement for qualification as a patient was that the child not have had any previous dental experience. Three techniques for measuring behavio

A retrospective cohort study of disability among chemists.

This retrospective cohort study examines disability among 3,686 men and 75 women who were employed as chemists in 1959 and who were followed through 1977. Overall, the chemists experienced fewer absences of eight or more consecutive days than expected on the basis of the experience of other salaried employees of the chemical company. Among the men, fewer claims than expected were observed for absences due to benign and unspecified neoplasia, heart disease, and peptic ulcer, and to diseases of the urinary system, bones and joints, and skin. Also, the chemist had lower than expected incidence ra

Vestibular Disability/Handicap in Fibromyalgia: A Questionnaire Study.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a poorly understood, central pain processing disorder characterized by a broad range of symptoms, such as chronic pain, sleep disruption, chronic fatigue, and psychosomatic symptoms. In addition, recent studies have shown that FM patients also experience dizziness. We aimed to establish a prevalence rate of vestibular symptoms in a population of FM patients through a battery of questionnaires investigating socio-demographic, clinical and psychological characteristics, combined with the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and the Situational Vertigo Questionnaire (SVQ). A to

Causal models of reading disability: a twin study.

The genetic and environmental relationships among measures of phoneme awareness, naming speed, Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and reading performance were investigated in 623 identical and fraternal twin pairs tested in the Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center. A Cholesky decomposition analysis of these measures provided evidence supporting the double deficit hypothesis that difficulties in phonological processing and naming speed both contribute to reading disability. Additionally, the model revealed marginally significant genetic and significant non-shared environmental relationships

The discovery of disability: a phenomenological study of unilateral neglect.

OBJECTIVE: Clients with right brain damage and unilateral neglect often lack awareness of their disabilities. This study examined how 4 participants with neglect experienced, discovered, and handled their disabilities in the context of their everyday life. METHOD: The 4 participants were interviewed five to seven times during their rehabilitation process. The data were collected and analyzed using the EPP (empirical, phenomenological, psychological) method. FINDINGS: Findings revealed seven features that described a discovery process for the 4 participants. During this process, each particip

Motor neurone disease--a study of prevalence and disability.

We conducted a point prevalence study of motor neurone disease in the counties of South Glamorgan, Mid Glamorgan and Gwent, whose combined population is estimated at 1,394,400. A total of 56 patients were identified, giving a point prevalence for motor neurone disease in this area of 4.02/100,000 on 22/06/92. These cases were reclassified according to the World Federation of Neurology criteria for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis following a further clinical assessment, when disability was also evaluated (in 49 cases). Seven patients were reclassified on review of their medical records alone. Ove

Examining Valued Social Participation of Disabled Older Adults Through the Frameworks of Critical Gerontology and Critical Disability Studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The importance of social participation for older adults has been well articulated. Missing from this discourse is a critical consideration of how social participation is shaped by political, economic, and social contexts that marginalize aging and disabled bodies. We bridge this gap by applying critical gerontology and critical disability frameworks to our analysis of how access to health and social services and individual and environmental factors are associated with engagement in valued social activities among disabled older adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Us

Mapping studies on a pericentric inversion (18) (p11.31 q21.1) in a family with both schizophrenia and learning disability.

Chromosomal abnormalities that co-occur with psychiatric disorders can be useful direct pointers to the locus of susceptibility genes. Two families with pericentric inversions of chromosome 18, inv 18(p11.3 q21.1) and psychiatric illness have previously been described. We have fine mapped the chromosomal breakpoints of the rearrangement in a clinically well, inversion carrier from one of these families where other inversion carriers suffered from chronic schizophrenia or severe learning disability. Systematic review and evidence gap mapping of Alzheimer's disease biomarker studies in those with intellectual and developmental disability.

UNLABELLED: There are a relatively small number of investigations into brain aging in those with intellectual and developmental disability (I/DD). This project seeks to (1) characterize the internationally available multi-omics Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarker studies including those with I/DD, and (2) discuss future research directions. PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched under the following criteria: cross-sectional or longitudinal AD-omics studies on adults (18 +) with I/DD. 532 studies were identified, 186 studies were evaluated for full-text, 79 studies were excluded, and 1

Cytogenetic Studies of Rwandan Pediatric Patients Presenting with Global Developmental Delay, Intellectual Disability and/or Multiple Congenital Anomalies.

Global developmental delay (GDD) is defined as a significant delay in two or more developmental domains: gross or fine motor, speech/language, cognitive, social/personal and activities of daily living. Many of these children will go on to be diagnosed with intellectual disability (ID), which is most commonly defined as having an IQ <75 in addition to impairment in adaptive functioning. Cytogenetic studies have been performed in 664 Rwandan pediatric patients presenting GDD/ID and/or multiple congenital abnormalities (MCA). Karyotype analysis was performed in all patients and revealed 260 chrom
