Burden of Mental and Behavioral Disorders in Colombia, 2022: A Subnational Analysis Based on Disability-Adjusted Life Years.

Mental disorders encompass conditions that affect cognition, emotions, and behavior, representing a major public health challenge. In Colombia, there are no studies that estimate the burden of disease caused by mental and behavioral disorders. This study aimed to determine the burden of disease attributable to these conditions in the departments of Colombia in 2022. A burden of disease analysis was conducted using official national data sources, including the Individual Health Service Delivery Records and death certificates from the Vital Statistics System, consolidated by the Ministry of Heal

Impact of twelve immunization-preventable infectious diseases on population health using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in Spain.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to estimate the burden of selected immunization-preventable infectious diseases in Spain using the Burden of Communicable Diseases in Europe (BCoDE) methodology, as well as focusing on the national immunization programme and potential new inclusions. METHODS: The BCoDE methodology relies on an incidence and pathogen-based approach to calculate disease burden via disability-adjusted life year (DALY) estimates. It considers short and long-term sequelae associated to an infection via outcome trees. The BCoDE toolkit was used to populate those trees with

Cancers: What Are the Costs in Relation to Disability-Adjusted Life Years? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Cancers currently represent a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and precisely estimating their burden is crucial for evidence-based decision-making. This study aimed at understanding the average costs of cancer-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and highlighting possible differences in economic estimates obtained with diverse approaches. We searched four scientific databases to identify all the primary literature simultaneously investigating cancer-related costs and DALYs. In view of the different methodologies, studies were divided into two groups: those estimating costs s

Disability-adjusted life-years from human papillomavirus-related oral cavity and pharynx cancers in US men, 2017-2021.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) incidence in men has surpassed cervical cancer in women as the most common cancer linked to high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). However, vaccine uptake remains suboptimal in both sexes. The objectives of this study were to quantify disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) because of HPV-associated OPC in US men from 2017 to 2021 and to highlight the potential impact of widespread vaccination. METHODS: Crude incidence counts and 12-month survival rates were extracted from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Re

Estimation of the global burden of tungiasis in endemic countries using a disability adjusted life-years modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical zoonotic skin disease which is endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, caused by sand fleas of the genus Tunga, which burrow into the skin of affected humans and animals, most commonly when the feet come in contact with infested soil. Sand flea infection leads to inflammation, severe itching, and pain, with the potential for secondary bacterial or viral infections, gangrene, and disfigurement. Tungiasis disproportionately affects poor rural communities, and individuals living in unhygienic settlements. To date, the existing burden of tungi

A comparative study of incidence, mortality and disability adjusted life years (DALYs) for leading cancers in BRICS countries.

BACKGROUND: While cancer stands as a prominent global contributor to mortality, the BRICS countries, which contribute a considerable proportion of the world's economy, also account for a substantial proportion of global cancer-related deaths. The study aims to compile data on the incidence, mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of leading cancers in BRICS countries to assess any variations in these parameters. METHODS: Indicators such as the age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardised mortality rate (ASMR) were abstracted from GLOBOCAN 2022. Global Burden of Dis

Systematic Review of the Manifestations of Congenital Rubella Syndrome in Infants and Characterization of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs).

Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) continues to cause disability among unvaccinated populations in countries with no or insufficient rubella vaccine coverage to prevent transmission. We systematically reviewed the literature on birth outcomes associated with CRS to estimate the duration, severity, and frequency of combinations of morbidities. We searched PubMed, the Science Citation Index, and references from relevant articles for studies in English with primary data on the frequency of CRS manifestations for ≥20 cases and identified 65 studies representing 66 study populations that met our inc

Comparing the impact of two concurrent infectious disease outbreaks on The Netherlands population, 2009, using disability-adjusted life years.

In 2009 two notable outbreaks, Q fever and the novel influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, occurred in The Netherlands. Using a composite health measure, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), the outbreaks were quantified and compared. DALYs were calculated using standardized methodology incorporating age- and sex-stratified data in a disease progression model; years lost due to disability and years of life lost were computed by outcome. Nationally, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 caused more DALYs (24 484) than Q fever (5797). However, Q fever was 8·28 times more severe [497 DALYs/1000 symptomatic cases (DP1SC)]
