The tragic fire disaster in Sweden 1998, killing 63 and wounding 213 teenagers was the result of arson fire in the basement of an overcrowded discotheque. Since the disaster occurred in a major city with substantial resources, all the injured could be hospitalised within two hours. The load on four local hospitals was initially severe due to the large number of injured. The patients suffered from inhalation injuries of different severity, whereas 25 of them also had deep skin burn injuries. Thirteen of the most severe burn injuries were transported to burn units in other parts of Sweden and to

Disasters cause a wide spectrum of respiratory injuries and affect hundreds of millions of people each year. Because the respiratory system is in continuous contact with the external environment, it is among the most vulnerable systems in disaster settings. Silica-and asbestos-containing dust released from earthquake debris, fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke, mold spores in flood-damaged interiors, ash and acidic gases from volcanic eruptions, toxic industrial chemicals released during chemical incidents, barotrauma from explosions, and biological or pandemic threats each trigger acu

Orthopedic injuries, especially fractures of long bones as well as multiple fractures and comminuted fractures, are very common after destructive disasters (e.g., earthquakes, wars, and hurricanes). Another frequent problem is traumatic rhabdomyolysis, which may result in crush syndrome, the second most frequent cause of death after direct traumatic impact following earthquakes. To improve outcomes, interventions should be initiated even before extrication of the victims, which include maintenance of airway patency and spine stabilization, stopping traumatic bleeding by any means, and initiati

Pandemics of influenza, cholera, and plague are part of global history. Regional epidemics and pandemics of infectious diseases, primarily influenza A, continue to cause significant morbidity and mortality while remaining unpredictable in nature. Sudden-onset disasters such as earthquakes and floods occur with little warning. The consequences of climate change and environmental degradation can only be expected to increase the incidence of some infectious diseases and weather-related crises, adding to the unpredictability of such events. Health leaders, both in public health and healthcare, nee

Natural disasters may lead to the outbreaks of infectious diseases because they increase the risk factors for infectious diseases. This paper reviews the risk factors for infectious diseases after natural disasters, especially earthquake, and the infectious diseases following disasters reported in recent years. The infectious diseases after earthquake include diarrhea, cholera, viral hepatitis, upper respiratory tract infection, tuberculosis, measles, leptospirosis, dengue fever, tetanus, and gas gangrene, as well as some rare infections. Children are vulnerable to infectious diseases, so pedi

The forensic pathologist has always had a central role in the identification of the dead in every day practice, in accidents, and in disasters involving hundreds or thousands of victims. This role has changed in recent years, as advances in forensic odontology, genetics and anthropology have improved the chances of identifying victims beyond recognition. According to the Interpol DVI Guide, fingerprints, dental examination and DNA are the primary identifiers, and this has given new emphasis to the role of the forensic pathologist as the leader of a multidisciplinary team of experts in a disast

After geophysical disasters (i.e., earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis), media reports almost always stress the risk for epidemics; whether this risk is genuine has been debated. We analyzed the medical literature and data from humanitarian agencies and the World Health Organization from 1985 to 2004. Of >600 geophysical disasters recorded, we found only 3 reported outbreaks related to these disasters: 1 of measles after the eruption of Pinatubo in Philippines, 1 of coccidioidomycosis after an earthquake in California, and 1 of Plasmodium vivax malaria in Costa Rica related to an earthqu

Since 1982 the St. Radboud hospital, Nijmegen, has a contiguity plan for peace-time disasters which describes the way to deal with great numbers of patients of traffic-, environmental- or industrial-calamities. The function of the commander, the separate hospital services, the medical and nursing triage team and administrative services are clearly delineated. Also is indicated how to organise communication between hospital, municipality, police and fire-brigade. The plan also provides possibilities for information towards press and relatives of the victims.

INTRODUCTION: Negative mental health outcomes associated with disaster exposure can increase risks of interpersonal and self-directed violence. However, the link between disaster exposure and increased incidence in violent deaths is not clearly established.
STUDY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work is to assess the incidence of violent deaths in non-disaster and disaster periods across five distinct disaster events.
METHODS: This study uses an ecological, quasi-experimental design to assess violent deaths in pre-disaster and disaster periods across five U.S. states (e.g., North Carolina, O

Disasters, including natural disasters and man-made ones, occur rather frequently in recent years. Disasters bring destruction to the resources and expectations of local residents and cause varying degrees of physical and mental damage to the victims, some of whom suffered persistent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Human caring is the essence and core of nursing. Giving consideration to the needs and wishes of patients, the nursing staff respect the personal values of patients, give patients sincere attention and care, satisfy the reasonable needs of patients, protect the dignity of pat

OBJECTIVES: Given the loss of laboratory infrastructure following flooding disasters, the objectives of this review were (1) to describe current practices in the treatment of aquatic injuries and infections in nondisaster scenarios; (2) to describe how lessons learned from the management of superficial and invasive infections in survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami could improve current management practices; (3) to stratify waterborne infections by causative agents and preferred saline levels; and (4) to recommend initial wound and empiric antibiotic management strategies for specific aq

Undernutrition, a chief child killer in developing countries, has been a major public health problem in Haiti. Following the 2010 disasters (earthquake and cholera) and the intensive relief efforts to address them, we sought to determine the trends of child undernutrition in Haiti using data from the 2005-06 Haiti Demographic and Health Survey (HDHS) and from a Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transitions (SMART) survey in 2012. Growth data analyses included 2,463 (HDHS) and 4,727 (SMART) children ages 0-59 months. We calculated the prevalence of stunting, wasting, and unde

Medical risks of radiation exaggerated; psychological risks underestimated. The discussion about atomic energy has become topical again following the nuclear accident in Fukushima. There is some argument about the gravity of medical and biological consequences of prolonged exposure to radiation. The risk of cancer following a low dose of radiation is usually estimated by linear extrapolation of the incidence of cancer among survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The radiobiological linear-quadratic model (LQ-model) gives a more accurate description of observed

In the aftermath of many disasters the silence is punctuated by the crying of infants, hungry infants. The aim of this paper is to discuss ethical issues in feeding infants after disasters. The Asia Pacific region generates 25% of the world's GDP, but experiences 45% of natural disasters and 42% of the economic losses due to disasters. The region has 61% of the world's population, but 86% of the population affected by disasters. Breastfeeding, exclusive to six months and continuing thereafter, is important for growth and the health of the infant in the short term and later in life. In most nat

Dialysis-dependent patients, especially those on peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, rely heavily on uninterrupted access to electricity, clean water, and supply chains. Disasters, both natural and man-made, disrupt these critical systems, placing patients at significant risk of treatment interruptions, hospitalization, and mortality. Preparing for these challenges is vital to ensure continuity of life-saving care during crises. This review aims to examine the unique challenges faced by dialysis patients during disasters, including logistical barriers, workforce shortages, and infrastru

There is increasing emphasis on mentaL heaLth aspects in disasters, with greater recognition of the tott it takes on affected individuats. Disasters can trigger both psychiatric disorders and broader distress behaviors. However, it is important to appreciate the more systemic imptication of integration of psychiatric care into the resitience of a community. Disaster mentat heatth must focus on communities, not just individual,s. Socioenvironmental disasters such as wildfires, floods, extreme heat events, and zoonotic epidemics have been increasing in magnitude and frequency. These events are sometimes are followed by increases in overdose mortality. This paper applies an adaptation of the Big Events framework, originally developed to understand macrosocial changes and their effects on HIV, to guide research into the pathways through which socioenvironmental disasters may cause increases in overdose mortality. These pathways include economic disruption, health and social service disruption, population displacement, cha

Multi-hazard events, characterized by the simultaneous, cascading, or cumulative occurrence of multiple natural hazards, pose a significant threat to human lives and assets. This is primarily due to the cumulative and cascading effects arising from the interplay of various natural hazards across space and time. However, their identification is challenging, which is attributable to the complex nature of natural hazard interactions and the limited availability of multi-hazard observations. This study presents an approach for identifying multi-hazard events during the past 123 years (1900-2023) u

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of infectious diseases pose particular challenges for hospitals and intensive care units.
OBJECTIVES: Typical infectiological scenarios and their significance for modern intensive care medicine are presented.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Selected pathogens/infectious diseases that have significantly strained the resources of intensive care units are described.
RESULTS: Intensive medical care is necessary in severe cases of many infectious diseases. In the context of epidemics/pandemics, many critically ill patients have to be admitted within a short time. Examples are the 20
