Spatial and discrimination learning in rodents infected with the nematode Strongyloides ratti.

Recent work has shown that mice with subclinical parasitic infections suffer impaired spatial learning and memory, as assayed in an open-field water maze. Although the mechanism underlying this effect is not clear, the phenomenon has been reported following infection with both a protozoan parasite (Eimeria vermiformis) and a gastrointestinal nematode (Heligmosomoides polygyrus). In a variety of experiments, we examined the effects of a different gastrointestinal nematode, Strongyloides ratti, on the ability of rats and mice to learn a spatial or a discrimination task. Animals were tested at va

Discriminative region learning for point cloud-based place recognition.

Point cloud-based place recognition aims to estimate a rough location by searching the database with a global descriptor aggregated from local features of the query point cloud. Recent advanced methods exploit the attention mechanism that establishes all pairs of relationships to enhance the local features with long-range contextual information. However, this operation may aggregate redundant and misleading information from time-varying objects and task-irrelevant areas (such as cars and ground points) into the local features, thereby impairing the discriminative power of the features. In this

Deep learning for discriminating cochlear malformations on temporal bone CT.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnosis of cochlear malformation on temporal bone CT images is often difficult because the imaging findings are frequently subtle. Our aim was to assess the utility of deep learning analysis in diagnosing cochlear malformation on temporal bone CT images. METHODS: A total of 373 temporal bone CTs (187 with normal and 186 with malformed cochlea) were included in this study. The network Swin UNETR was used for cochlea automatic segmentation, then we divided it into left and right sides. three classification networks, ResNet50, EfficientNet-B0 and DenseNet121, were used for training

Low Perceived Self-Efficacy Impedes Discriminative Fear Learning.

Perceived self-efficacy refers to a subject's expectation about the outcomes his/her behavior will have in a challenging situation. Low self-efficacy has been implicated in the origins and maintenance of phobic behavior. Correlational studies suggest an association between perceived self-efficacy and learning. The experimental manipulation of perceived self-efficacy offers an interesting approach to examine the impact of self-efficacy beliefs on cognitive and emotional functions. Recently, a positive effect of an experimentally induced increased self-efficacy on associative learning has been d

Secondary Somatosensory Cortex Is Required for Learning but Not Execution of a Tactile Discrimination.

The relationship between primary (S1) and secondary (S2) somatosensory cortex is not well understood, and the role of S2 in somatosensory function is not well defined. To test the role of S2 and its interplay with S1 in learning a texture discrimination, we reversibly inhibited primary (S1) and/or secondary somatosensory cortex (S2) bilaterally using DREADDs and measured the effect on the ability of mice to learn a whisker-dependent tactile discrimination. Freely moving mice foraged in an arena that contained two bowls, one of which contained a buried food reward. The bowls could only be disti

Interaction of Frequency and Inflectional Status: An Approach From Discriminative Learning.

High frequency of occurrences has been associated with phonetic reduction, on one hand, and phonetic enhancement, on the other hand. This study first looks into the possibility that these opposite frequency effects are at least partially due to the different inflectional status of the items being investigated. Based on tongue position data from a spontaneous speech corpus of German, we found that stem vowels in inflected words tended to be hyper-articulated (i.e., phonetic enhancement), whereas those in non-inflected words tended to be articulated with more centralized tongue positions (i.e.,

Discriminating head trauma outcomes using machine learning and genomics.

A percentage of the population suffers prolonged and persistent post-concussion symptoms (PCS) following average head injuries or develops severe neurological dysfunction following minor head trauma. Genetic variants that may contribute to individual response to head trauma have been investigated in some studies, but to date none have explored the use of machine learning (ML) methods with genomic data to specifically explore outcomes of head trauma. Whole exome sequencing (WES) was completed for three groups of individuals (N = 60): (a) 16 individuals with severe neurological responses to mino

Abnormality detection of mammograms by discriminative dictionary learning on DSIFT descriptors.

Detection and classification of breast lesions using mammographic images are one of the most difficult studies in medical image processing. A number of learning and non-learning methods have been proposed for detecting and classifying these lesions. However, the accuracy of the detection/classification still needs improvement. In this paper we propose a powerful classification method based on sparse learning to diagnose breast cancer in mammograms. For this purpose, a supervised discriminative dictionary learning approach is applied on dense scale invariant feature transform (DSIFT) features.

Fornix transection impairs learning of randomly changing object discriminations.

The hippocampus has a well established role in spatial memory, but increasing evidence points to a role in nonspatial aspects of memory. To investigate such a role, six macaque monkeys received a bilateral transection of the fornix to disconnect subcortical inputs and outputs of the hippocampus. An additional six macaque monkeys constituted an unoperated control group. To test the involvement of the hippocampus in nonspatial aspects of memory, both groups were trained postoperatively on four concurrent visual object discrimination problems, each problem having one rewarded object and one unrew

Fine-grained Chinese dish recognition on CNFOOD-241: A discriminative learning approach for improving category-level discrimination.

Accurate recognition of food images is essential for image-based dietary assessment, nutritional tracking, and digital health applications. However, closed-set Chinese dish recognition remains challenging because many categories in the CNFOOD-241 dataset exhibit strong visual similarity, substantial intra-class variation, and subtle inter-class differences. In this study, we present an integrated discriminative training strategy for fine-grained Chinese dish recognition using RegNetY-32GF as the student backbone. Rather than proposing a new backbone architecture, the study focuses on improving

Learning impairments in Fmr1-/- mice on an audio-visual temporal pattern discrimination task.

Estimating time and making predictions is integral to our experience of the world. Given the importance of timing to most behaviors, disruptions in temporal processing and timed performance are reported in a number of neuropsychiatric disorders such as Schizophrenia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), and Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Symptoms that implicitly include disruption in timing are atypical turn-taking during social interactions, unusual verbal intonations, poor reading, speech and language skills, inattention, delays in learning, and difficu

MRI classification and discrimination of spinal schwannoma and meningioma based on deep learning.

BACKGROUD: Schwannoma (SCH) and meningiomas (MEN) are the two most common primary spinal cord tumors. Differentiating between them preoperatively remains a clinical challenge due to the substantial overlap in their clinical presentation and imaging characteristics. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to facilitate early diagnosis of patients and reduce clinician stress by constructing a deep learning-based classification model for automatic diagnosis of schwannoma and meningiomas using magnetic resonance images (MRI). METHODS: We retrospectively collected MRI images of 74 patients with

Utilizing machine learning algorithms for precise discrimination of glycosuria in fluorescence spectroscopic data.

Fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with a random forest machine learning algorithm offers a promising non-invasive approach for diagnosing glycosuria, a condition characterized by excess sugar in the urine of diabetic patients. This study investigated the ability of this method to differentiate between diabetic and healthy control urine samples. Fluorescent spectra were captured from urine samples using a Xenon arc lamp emitting light within the 200 to 950 nm wavelength range, with consistent fluorescence emission observed at 450 nm under an excitation wavelength of 370 nm. Healthy control samp

Discrimination and learning of temporal input sequences in a cerebellar Purkinje cell model.

INTRODUCTION: Temporal information processing is essential for sequential contraction of various muscles with the appropriate timing and amplitude for fast and smooth motor control. These functions depend on dynamics of neural circuits, which consist of simple neurons that accumulate incoming spikes and emit other spikes. However, recent studies indicate that individual neurons can perform complex information processing through the nonlinear dynamics of dendrites with complex shapes and ion channels. Although we have extensive evidence that cerebellar circuits play a vital role in motor contro

Deep Learning Combined with Hyperspectral Imaging Technology for Variety Discrimination of Fritillaria thunbergii.

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCHM) plays an essential role in the international pharmaceutical industry due to its rich resources and unique curative properties. The flowers, stems, and leaves of Fritillaria contain a wide range of phytochemical compounds, including flavonoids, essential oils, saponins, and alkaloids, which may be useful for medicinal purposes. Fritillaria thunbergii Miq. Bulbs are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine as expectorants and antitussives. In this paper, a feasibility study is presented that examines the use of hyperspectral imaging integrated with

Nostril-specific and structure-based olfactory learning of chiral discrimination in human adults.

Practice makes perfect. In human olfaction, such plasticity is generally assumed to occur at the level of cortical synthetic processing that shares information from both nostrils. Here we present findings that challenge this view. In two experiments, we trained human adults unirhinally for the discrimination between odor enantiomers over a course of about 10 to 11 days. Results showed that training-induced perceptual gain was restricted to the trained nostril yet partially generalized to untrained odor enantiomers in a structure- rather than quality- based manner. In other words, learning enha

Automated discrimination of dicentric and monocentric chromosomes by machine learning-based image processing.

Dose from radiation exposure can be estimated from dicentric chromosome (DC) frequencies in metaphase cells of peripheral blood lymphocytes. We automated DC detection by extracting features in Giemsa-stained metaphase chromosome images and classifying objects by machine learning (ML). DC detection involves (i) intensity thresholded segmentation of metaphase objects, (ii) chromosome separation by watershed transformation and elimination of inseparable chromosome clusters, fragments and staining debris using a morphological decision tree filter, (iii) determination of chromosome width and centre

Discrimination of schizophrenia auditory hallucinators by machine learning of resting-state functional MRI.

Auditory hallucinations (AH) are a symptom that is most often associated with schizophrenia, but patients with other neuropsychiatric conditions, and even a small percentage of healthy individuals, may also experience AH. Elucidating the neural mechanisms underlying AH in schizophrenia may offer insight into the pathophysiology associated with AH more broadly across multiple neuropsychiatric disease conditions. In this paper, we address the problem of classifying schizophrenia patients with and without a history of AH, and healthy control (HC) subjects. To this end, we performed feature extrac
