Human phosphoglucomutase 1 (PGM1) plays a central role in cellular glucose homeostasis, catalyzing the conversion of glucose 1-phosphate and glucose 6-phosphate. Recently, missense variants of this enzyme were identified as causing an inborn error of metabolism, PGM1 deficiency, with features of a glycogen storage disease and a congenital disorder of glycosylation. Previous studies of selected PGM1 variants have revealed various mechanisms for enzyme dysfunction, including regions of structural disorder and side-chain rearrangements within the active site. Here, we examine variants within a su

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CeD) is a chronic gluten-triggered immune-mediated enteropathy. Increasing evidence suggests that the gut microbiota may contribute to CeD pathophysiology. However, the global research landscape, hotspot evolution, and immune-mechanistic trends in CeD-gut microbiota research remain insufficiently mapped. This study aimed to systematically map the current research landscape and future hotspots in CeD-gut microbiota research.
METHODS: We conducted a bibliometric analysis with a mechanism-oriented narrative interpretation. Literature related to CeD and the gut microbi

The role of trace elements, including zinc, selenium, iron, copper, cadmium, lead, and other essential or toxic elements, in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has become increasingly recognized because of their effects on oxidative stress, metabolic regulation, and renal dysfunction. However, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research trends and molecular insights into these interactions is still lacking. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of publications from 1981 to 2025 using WoSCC, and data were analyzed using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the Bibliometric Online Analysis Platform

BACKGROUND: The 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of mRNA contains regulatory elements that are essential for the appropriate expression of many genes. These regulatory elements are involved in the control of nuclear transport, polyadenylation status, subcellular targetting as well as rates of translation and degradation of mRNA. Indeed, 3'-UTR mutations have been associated with disease, but frequently this region is not analyzed. To gain insights into congenital heart disease (CHD), we have been analyzing cardiac-specific transcription factor genes, including GATA4, which encodes a zinc finger

Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) is a tropical and subtropical parasitic nematode, with infections in humans causing angiostrongyliasis (rat lungworm disease), characterized by eosinophilic meningitis. Hawaii has been identified as a global hotspot of infection, with recent reports of high infection rates in humans, as well as rat definitive and snail intermediate hosts. This study investigated variation in A. cantonensis infection, both prevalence and intensity, in wild populations of two species of rats (Rattus exulans and R. rattus) and one species of snail (Parmarion martensi). Animals can decrease their individual risk of predation by forming groups. The encounter-dilution hypothesis extends the potential benefits of gregariousness to biting insects and vector-borne disease by predicting that the per capita number of insect bites should decrease within larger host groups. Although vector-borne diseases are common and can exert strong selective pressures on hosts, there have been few tests of the encounter-dilution effect in natural systems. We conducted an experimental test of the encounter-dilution hypothesis using the American robin (Turdus migratorius), a common

Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) have been implicated in all human influenza pandemics in recent history. Despite this, surprisingly little is known about the mechanisms underlying the maintenance and spread of these viruses in their natural bird reservoirs. Surveillance has identified an AIV 'hotspot' in shorebirds at Delaware Bay, in which prevalence is estimated to exceed other monitored sites by an order of magnitude. To better understand the factors that create an AIV hotspot, we developed and parametrized a mechanistic transmission model to study the simultaneous epizootiological impacts o
