Asbestos Exposure and Ovarian Cancer - a Gynaecological Occupational Disease. Background, Mandatory Notification, Practical Approach.

In 2017, ovarian cancer due to asbestos exposure was designated a new, and thereby the first, gynaecological occupational disease in Germany. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fibre with an annual usage in Germany of 160 000 - 180 000 metric tonnes in the 1960s and 1970s. The carcinogenicity of asbestos for the target organs lungs, larynx, pleura including pericardium, and peritoneum including tunica vaginalis testis has been clearly established for many years. Recent meta-analyses of data from cohort studies have demonstrated that the risk of ovarian cancer roughly doubles in women wi

An overview of disease surveillance and notification system in Nigeria and the roles of clinicians in disease outbreak prevention and control.

While outbreaks of infectious diseases have long presented a public health challenge, especially in developing countries like Nigeria; within recent years, the frequency of such outbreaks has risen tremendously. Furthermore, with the recent outbreaks of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases such as Ebola virus disease and other epidemic prone diseases in Nigeria demanding immediate public health action, there is a need to strengthen the existing notifiable disease surveillance and notification system with increased clinicians' involvement in timely reporting of notifiable diseases to de

Audit of the detection and notification of meningococcal disease at a North London university district hospital.

The microbiology department at a North London hospital audited notifications of suspected meningococcal disease in response to a reported high rate, which it suspected was due to over-reporting out of hours to public health specialists. All cases notified over a 14-month period were assessed with regards to time of reporting and subsequent microbiological confirmation. Of 36 notifications, 18 were confirmed as bacterial, mostly meningococcal meningitis. Of the four types of sample readily obtainable on admission (blood culture, ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid [EDTA] blood sample, throat swa

The EPI in Borno State, Nigeria: impact on routine disease notifications and hospital admissions.

An earlier report on the Nigerian expanded programme on immunization (EPI), covering 1974-1988, failed to demonstrate a clear-cut impact of the programme. This report attempts to determine the effectiveness of EPI in Borno State, Nigeria. We analysed trends in routine notifications for diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, tuberculosis, measles, and pneumonia, from 1985 to 1991; data on poliomyelitis were excluded because of poor documentation, while we included data on pneumonia for comparison. We also performed a before (1983-1987) after (1988-1991) comparison in terms of the intensifications of E

Notification of Huntington's disease as primary cause of death in Brazil from 1984 to 2008.

The aim of this article was to conduct a retrospective observational study on reported deaths due to Huntington's disease (HD) in Brazil in the past 25 years (from 1984 to 2008). Data were obtained from the Brazilian Mortality Information System (SIM/DATASUS), the official system of Brazilian Mortality Database. The data obtained included information regarding the gender of the deceased and the number of death notifications, which we stratified by demographic regions and states. HD mortality per 100,000 was calculated and plotted in a graph. Linear regression was calculated using ordinary leas

Notifications of vaccine preventable diseases in Australia. Quarterly report (January-March 2000).

Vaccine preventable disease notifications for Australia with disease onset dates between January and March 2000 are reviewed. During this quarter, numbers of notifications for Haemophilus influenzae type b disease and measles were the lowest ever recorded, while those for rubella were the lowest recorded since before the epidemic of spring 1992. These are promising trends that are likely to represent a true reduction in disease incidence. Numbers of pertussis notifications declined compared with the last quarter of 1999, but remain high, making up 88% of notifications for the vaccine preventab

Partner notification outcomes after integration of an on-site disease intervention specialist at a sexually transmitted disease clinic.

BACKGROUND: Partner notification services (PNS) are highly effective in reducing transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). We assessed outcomes of PNS before and after integration of an on-site disease intervention specialist (DIS) at a publicly-funded STD clinic. METHODS: From August 2014 to December 2015, patients testing positive for infectious syphilis or gonorrhea at the Rhode Island STD Clinic were referred to on-site DIS for partner notification. Data on PNS outcomes were reviewed for eight months before integration of DIS at the clinic and compared to eight months after.

Legionnaires' disease in France: sensitivity of the mandatory notification has improved over the last decade.

The notification rate of Legionnaires' disease (LD) in France was 2.4/100 000 population in 2010, varying across regions with an increasing rate from west to east. Two sources [mandatory notifications (MN) and a survey of hospital laboratories] were used in a capture-recapture study to estimate the number of LD cases and the sensitivity of the MN system at national and regional levels in 2010. The number of missed cases was estimated using Chapman's method. The estimated sensitivity of MN was 88.5% (95% CI 88.0-89.0) and ranged from 70% to 100% by region. The estimated incidence was 2.7/100 00

Case-finding effectiveness of partner notification and cluster investigation for sexually transmitted diseases/HIV.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the case-finding effectiveness of partner notification(PN) and cluster investigation for sexually transmitted disease (STD)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). STUDY: Literature review and quantitative summary. RESULTS: Since 1975, the median case-finding yield for syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia PN reported in the literature is about 1 new case found for every 4 or 5 cases interviewed. The yield from HIV PN is approximately half as large, although there is substantial variability in yield across reports for each disease. Published reports underline the central role p

Behaviour, knowledge and reactions concerning sexually transmitted diseases: implications for partner notification in Lusaka.

Available data show that STDs and their consequences are a major health problem in Zambia. This study focuses on factors which could have implications for partner notification, as a tool for prevention. Fifty women and fifty men with STD were interviewed at two outpatient clinics in Lusaka, where partner notification is not functioning optimally. A majority of the sexual partners during the last three months were known by the patients who also stated a willingness to bring more partners than they were asked to do. Women had symptoms for a longer period than men before they came for treatment.

Blood donor notification of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease risk: Lessons in communicating donor deferral and risk.

BACKGROUND: In 2005, the blood service in England notified 101 donors by letter that they may be at risk of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) because a recipient of their blood later developed vCJD. Donor experience of the notification was studied in a 2009 survey. METHODS: Fifteen questions focused on satisfaction, emotional response and understanding of the notification letter. An average Likert score was calculated: 1 and 2 = dissatisfied, 3 = equivocal and 4 and 5 = satisfied; the per cent satisfied and dissatisfied were calculated and characteristics compared using the Fisher and

Potential effects of electronic laboratory reporting on improving timeliness of infectious disease notification--Florida, 2002-2006.

Electronic laboratory reporting (ELR) potentially can improve the timeliness of notifiable disease case reporting and subsequent disease control activities, but the extent of this improvement and the resulting effects on the workload of state or local surveillance teams are unknown. To estimate those effects, investigators from the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) evaluated the timeliness of reporting for four notifiable diseases of varying incubation periods: salmonellosis, shigellosis, meningococcal disease, and hepatitis A. Investigators then calculated the potential improvement expected
