Disgust assessment: Factorial structure and psychometric properties of the French version of the Disgust Propension and Sensibility Scale Revised-12.

The present study examined the internal and external validity of the French version of the 12-item Disgust Propensity and Sensitivity Scale-Revised (DPSS-12) in a nonclinical sample from the general population. Two hundred and eighty-two participants completed the DPSSf-12 questionnaire as well as the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI), Anxiety Trait (STAI B), Obsessional Belief Questionnaire 44 items (OBQ 44), Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Confirmatory Factor Analysis supported a 2-factor structure after two sensitivity items we

The impact of maternal disgust sensitivity from pregnancy until 3 years postpartum on the early development of disgust sensitivity in the child.

INTRODUCTION: Disgust plays a key role in pathogen avoidance. In children, it starts to develop alongside cognition, emotion processing, and social skills around the third year. This study examined whether maternal disgust sensitivity predicts disgust sensitivity in 3-year-old children and whether this relationship is affected by parity and maternal psychological factors. METHODS: Data were collected from 163 women (60% primiparae) who repeatedly (in the first trimester of pregnancy and then 6 weeks, 1 year, and 3 years postpartum) completed questionnaires on disgust sensitivity, state anxiet

Little Evidence for the Role of Disgust Sensitivity in Implicit Disgust to Images of White People Engaged in Injecting Drug Use (IDU).

Background: Previous research has shown that People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) are subject to public stigma, which affects access to, and provision and quality of, treatment and support services. Less is known about the socio-cognitive processes that support the development and maintenance of public stigma toward PWID. The present study investigated the role of disgust sensitivity in implicit disgust to injecting drug use. Methods: 126 participants took part in an online Implicit Association Task (IAT) measuring implicit disgust to pictorial stimuli of injecting drug use or medical injecting. Par

Examining sexual functioning and disgust in virtual reality: Low sexual interest/arousal and sexual pain moderate disgust toward sexual stimuli.

Sexual dysfunctions are highly prevalent, affecting up to one-third of the adult population and significantly impacting mental well-being and intimate relationships. Virtual reality (VR) offers a promising and ecologically valid tool for studying psychological disorders; however, its application to research on sexual functioning remains underdeveloped. Sexual disgust is positively associated with sexual dysfunction symptoms, yet existing research remains scarce and has relied primarily on retrospective questionnaires and computer-based 2D erotic stimuli. This experimental study investigates wh

Deontological Guilt and Disgust Sensitivity Modulate Moral Behaviour.

OBJECTIVE: Deontological Guilt (DG), and Altruistic Guilt (AG) emerge from the appraisal of violating an internalized rule or an altruistic principle, respectively. DG is strictly connected with Disgust Sensitivity and plays a key role in the development and maintenance of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Previous studies investigated how DG affects responses to hypothetical moral dilemmas, however how DG and Disgust Sensitivity interact modulating moral behavior is still unknown. METHODS: STUDY 1. 46 healthy participants performed an ecological paradigm in which people can spontaneously

Disgust: the disease-avoidance emotion and its dysfunctions.

This review analyses the accumulating evidence from psychological, psychophysiological, neurobiological and cognitive studies suggesting that the disease-avoidance emotion of disgust is a predominant emotion experienced in a number of psychopathologies. Current evidence suggests that disgust is significantly related to small animal phobias (particularly spider phobia), blood-injection-injury phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder contamination fears, and these are all disorders that have primary disgust elicitors as a significant component of their psychopathology. Disgust propensity and sen

Vaginismus and dyspareunia: automatic vs. deliberate disgust responsivity.

INTRODUCTION: The difficulty of penetration experienced in vaginismus and dyspareunia may at least partly be due to a disgust-induced defensive response. AIMS: To examine if sex stimuli specifically elicit: (i) automatic disgust-related memory associations; (ii) physiological disgust responsivity; and/or (iii) deliberate expression of disgust/threat. METHODS: Two single target Implicit Association Task (st-IAT) and electromyography (EMG) were conducted on three groups: vaginismus (N = 24), dyspareunia (N = 24), and control (N = 31) group. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: st-IAT, to index their initia

Color modulates disgust on surfaces, but not fear in scenes.

Negative emotions such as disgust and fear play an important role in helping humans rapidly avoid threats and dangers in the natural environment. Although these emotions are influenced by context and situation, they can also be directly evoked by simple image features encoded in the early visual system. The present study examined how chromatic information in visual stimuli contributes to the perception of two negative emotions: disgust and fear. Participants rated the degree of disgust and fear elicited by 100 chromatic images and their achromatic counterparts. Results showed that the removal

Spatial attention effects of disgusted and fearful faces.

Effective processing of threat-related stimuli is of significant evolutionary advantage. Given the intricate relationship between attention and the neural processing of threat-related emotions, this study manipulated attention allocation and emotional categories of threat-related stimuli as independent factors and investigated the time course of spatial-attention-modulated processing of disgusting and fearful stimuli. The participants were instructed to direct their attention either to the two vertical or to the two horizontal locations, where two faces and two houses would be presented. The t

Impressions of Deviant Disgust Expressions Are Functionally Specific.

How do people perceive those who violate emotional expression norms? Across four studies, impressions of people displaying disgust "inappropriately" depended on how the deviation occurred. Targets who failed to show disgust toward disgust-eliciting stimuli ("flat deviants") were judged as less healthy and lower in social status. Conversely, targets who expressed disgust to neutral stimuli ("react deviants") were judged as less open-minded and less cooperative. These impressions tracked inferred behavioral affordances: flat deviants were seen as more likely to engage in pathogen-risky behaviors

Disgust sensitivity and psychopathic behavior: A narrative review.

Humans live under constant threat from pathogenic microorganisms and minimizing such threat has been a major evolutionary selective force in shaping human behavior and health. A particular adaptive mechanism against the harm caused by parasites and their infectiousness is disgust sensitivity, which has evolved to detect and avoid poisonous foods as well as bodily secretions harboring virulent microorganisms. This ubiquitous and reflexive behavior requires the integration of several internal and external sensory signals between the brain, the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and the gastrointest

Neurocognitive mechanisms of mental imagery-based disgust learning.

Disgust imagery represents a potential pathological mechanism for disgust-related disorders. However, it remains controversial as to whether disgust can be conditioned with disgust-evoking mental imagery serving as the unconditioned stimulus (US). Therefore, we examined this using a conditioned learning paradigm in combination with event-related potential (ERP) analysis in 35 healthy college students. The results indicated that the initial neutral face (conditioned stimulus, CS+) became more disgust-evoking, unpleasant, and arousing after pairing with disgust-evoking imagery (disgust CS+), com

Trauma-Related Disgust in Veterans With Interpersonal Trauma.

Although traditionally conceptualized as an anxiety disorder, variability in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be explained by individual differences in peri- or posttraumatic disgust. We examined relationships between disgust reactions and other trauma-related symptoms in 100 veterans with a history of interpersonal trauma and gender differences in these variables. We also evaluated the mediating role of posttraumatic disgust and guilt in the relationship between peritraumatic disgust and PTSD symptoms. Participants completed cross-sectional self-report questionnaires of trauma-related

Disgust sensitivity predicts defensive responding to mortality salience.

Disgust protects the physical self. The present authors suggest that disgust also contributes to the protection of the psychological self by fostering stronger defensive reactions to existential concerns. To test this idea, 3 studies examined the link between disgust sensitivity and defensive responses to mortality salience or "terror management" processes (Greenberg, Solomon, & Pyszczynski, 1997). Each study included an individual difference measure of disgust sensitivity, a manipulation of mortality salience, and a dependent measure of defensive responding. In Study 1, disgust sensitivity pr

Fear and disgust propensity in spider phobic distress.

Three studies examined associations between spider phobic distress and two individual difference characteristics, disgust propensity (sensitivity to disgust elicitation) and fear propensity (sensitivity to fear elicitation). Although the relative contributions of trait anxiety and disgust propensity have been examined, researchers have yet to compare the parallel constructs of disgust and fear propensity. Two studies examined associations cross-sectionally, and a third longitudinal study examined associations of fear and disgust propensity with changes in distress and avoidance over time. In t

Disgust sensitivity in eating disorders: a preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Disgust is a basic emotion that has been relatively neglected in psychiatry in general and in eating disorders in particular. Nevertheless, there are features of disgust and its more complex derivatives (e.g., shame) which suggest that disgust may have a role to play in eating disorders. METHOD: Seventy-four patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, eating disorder not otherwise specified, and obese binge eater were compared with 15 control subjects on their levels of disgust sensitivity. RESULTS: Overall, eating disorder patients did not appear to be

Facial disgust in response to touches, smells, and tastes.

Disgust serves to defend the body from the entry of toxins and disease. Central to this function is a strong relationship with the proximate senses of smell, taste, and touch. Theory suggests that distinct and reflexive facial movements should be evoked by gustatory and olfactory disgusts, serving to impede bodily entry. While this hypothesis has received some support from facial recognition studies, whether smell and taste disgusts actually produce distinct facial responses, is unknown. Moreover, there has been no assessment of the facial response evoked by contact with disgusting objects. To

Exploring the role of the self in disgust-related psychopathologies.

While clinical research on disgust relies on nonclinical research, the framework of disgust as an immune mechanism is not as central in clinical research. The immune framework for disgust may be integrated into clinical research by acknowledging the role of the self as the critical element protected by the immune system. In this review, we offer the premise that at the center of all disgust-related behaviors, thoughts, and cognitions is an attempt to protect the self (i.e., "disgust is self-centered" or DISC). We offer evidence in support of DISC and explore the relevance of DISC to clinical r

Disgustingly perfect: An examination of disgust, perfectionism, and gender.

High levels of disgust and perfectionism co-exist in some clinical disorders raising questions about the relationship between the two. This research evaluated socially-related and physically-related disgust in people with varying levels of perfectionism. In Study 1, 120 college students participated in a state emotion-eliciting scenario task, then completed both the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised and the Three Dimensions of Disgust Survey (TDDS). In Study 2, 380 Qualtrics users completed the scenarios, along with the TDDS and Multidimensional Perfectionist Scale. Both studies showed that state e

Disgust or Dignity? The Moral Basis of Harm Reduction.

Harm reduction has been advocated to address a diverse range of public health concerns. The moral justification of harm reduction is usually presumed to be consequentialist because the goal of harm reduction is to reduce the harmful health consequences of risky behaviors, such as substance use. Harm reduction is contrasted with an abstinence model whose goal is to eradicate or reduce the prevalence of such behaviors. The abstinence model is often thought to be justified by 'deontological' considerations: it is claimed that many risky behaviors are morally unacceptable, and therefore that we ha
