When scientific sources fail to convince: evidence-oriented thinking enhances the effectiveness of science-based corrections.

This research demonstrates that citing scientific sources to correct disinformation can be ineffective or even counterproductive, and offers a potential remedy. Three experiments simulated a WhatsApp conversation about COVID-19 vaccine disinformation, examining corrections in the high-uncertainty context of the early 2021 stage of the pandemic (Studies 1 and 2) and among vaccine skeptics in 2024 (Study 3). A science-based correction backfired during the pandemic and was ineffective among skeptics in 2024. However, a brief, content-agnostic intervention, comprising three simple prompts directin

Harnessing the power of mobile and messaging apps for risk communication and intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic: lessons from the Western Pacific.

PROBLEM: The spread of mis- and disinformation on mobile and messaging apps during the COVID-19 pandemic not only fuelled anxieties and mistrust in health authorities but also undermined the effectiveness of the overall public health response. CONTEXT: Mobile and messaging apps help users stay informed and connected to their families, friends, colleagues and communities. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, these apps were also one of the primary channels where mis- and disinformation were circulated. ACTION: Recognizing the importance of including mobile and messaging apps in risk communi

Electroencephalographic signatures of consciousness: uncovering the fake news.

Amongst electroencephalographic markers of anaesthetic-induced unresponsiveness, those that estimate loss of frontoparietal functional connectivity detect loss of sensory perceptual connection with the outside world, rather than full phenomenological unconsciousness. This transition to unconsciousness is manifest as further incremental changes in indices of electroencephalographic complexity.

Spotting fake news: a qualitative review of misinformation and conspiracy theories in acne vulgaris.

Acne vulgaris is an extremely common disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, typically manifest as a highly visible facial and upper trunk dermatosis, with teenagers most frequently affected. This cohort is markedly susceptible to misinformation, given their impressionable age, distress about their appearance and high internet usage. This study aimed to assess the content of acne-related misinformation available online. A formal review of PubMed was performed in March 2022, using the terms 'acne' AND 'misinformation' OR 'disinformation' OR 'conspiracy theory', along with an informal Google search

Development of a Conceptual Framework of Health Misinformation During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Systematic Review of Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Despite the wide variety of studies that have focused on the recent COVID-19 infodemic, defining health mis- or disinformation remains a challenge due to the dynamic nature of the social media ecosystem and, in particular, the different terminologies from different fields of knowledge. OBJECTIVE: In this work, we aim to develop a conceptual framework of health misinformation during pandemic contexts that will enable the establishment of an interoperable definition of this concept and consequently a better management of these problems in the future. METHODS: We conducted a systema

Multimodal false information detection method based on Text-CNN and SE module.

False information detection can detect false information in social media and reduce its negative impact on society. With the development of multimedia, the multimodal content contained in false information is increasing, so it is important to use multimodal features to detect false information. This paper mainly uses information from two modalities, text and image. The features extracted by the backbone network are not further processed in the previous work, and the problems of noise and information loss in the process of fusing multimodal features are ignored. This paper proposes a false info

Media coverage, fake news, and the diffusion of xenophobic violence: A fine-grained county-level analysis of the geographic and temporal patterns of arson attacks during the German refugee crisis 2015-2017.

Over the year of 2015, about 800.000 refugees arrived in Germany, a number which equals around one percent of the total population. This migration process was labelled the refugee crisis and was accompanied by a contested debate. On the one hand, there was a widespread willingness to voluntarily help arriving refugees, on the other hand, the number of xenophobic attacks against refugees drastically increased. Our paper will focus on a specific form of xenophobic violence with a strong symbolic meaning: We analyze how arson attacks against collective accommodation facilities spread. Using a com

Active, aggressive, but to little avail: characterizing bot activity during the 2020 Singaporean elections.

Digital disinformation presents a challenging problem for democracies worldwide, especially in times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. In countries like Singapore, legislative efforts to quell fake news constitute relatively new and understudied contexts for understanding local information operations. This paper presents a social cybersecurity analysis of the 2020 Singaporean elections, which took place at the height of the pandemic and after the recent passage of an anti-fake news law. Harnessing a dataset of 240,000 tweets about the elections, we found that 26.99% of participating accoun

English Text Recognition Deep Learning Framework to Automatically Identify Fake News.

Fake news spreading rapidly worldwide is considered one of the most severe problems of modern technology that needs to be addressed immediately. The remarkable increase in the use of social media as a critical source of information combined with the shaking of trust in traditional media, the high speed of digital news dissemination, and the vast amount of information circulating on the Internet have exacerbated the problem of so-called fake news. The present work proves the importance of detecting fake news by taking advantage of the information derived from friendships between users. Specific

Fake news and the seven sins of capital: a metaphorical analysis of vices in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health crises spawn "sins" and moral deformities in society that are evident when they emerge but had seemed to be dormant to collective awareness before. Through the metaphor of the seven capital sins, the article analyzes the phenomenon of fake news in the social media and in the scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic: the lust of sensationalism through the seduction and exploitation of vulnerabilities associated with fear of death; gluttony for confirmatory contents that spread untruths in the attempt to turn versions into facts; the catechism of denialism, fueling wrath or hate in restrictive e

Fake news in the age of COVID-19: evolutional and psychobiological considerations.

The COVID-19 outbreak has been accompanied by a massive infodemic: an overabundance of information, some accurate and some not. At this pandemic we have seen a large scale of fake news and misinformation, leading to anti-vaccine, anti-mask, and anti-5G protests.1 Fake news is intentionally misleading and deceptive news that is written and published with the intent to damage an entity or a person. They may contain false, misleading, imposter, manipulated or fabricated content. Much of the discourse on fake news conflates three notions, named "information disorders": (a) Misinformation: false in

Despite misinformation, low trust, and conflict in Somalia, high demand for vaccines and a negative endorsement effect of non-state authorities.

Expanding vaccination coverage in conflict regions is crucial to the prevention of further mutations and outbreaks of COVID-19, as well as of future pandemics, worldwide. However, scholars' suppositions that low levels of trust and control over the flow of misinformation in these regions may necessitate tailored solutions-in particular, that health advice come from trusted non-state authorities-remain largely untested. To better understand the levels and drivers of COVID-19 vaccine receptivity in conflict regions, we partnered with the United Nations and the Somali Ministry of Justice to field

[Some trouble in the field of onychomycosis].

Recently, onychomycoses raised some interest from groups whose business is communication to the public. The combination of commercial interest, dogmatism and disinformation appears to have found there a potentially damaging field of action. This review is an attempt to shed some light on this topic using objective and qualified medical information.

Gender, education, and digital generations as determinants of attitudes toward health information for health workers in West Java, Indonesia.

Health information is a commodity heavily sought by Indonesians because of the increasing consciousness of a healthy lifestyle. However, the circulation of health information is consistently disrupted by misinformation and disinformation, particularly on social media and chatting platforms such as WhatsApp. Identified misinformation and disinformation can be found on the official web page run by the Ministry of Communication and Information (https://trustpositif.kominfo.go.id/). Digital information exchange often involves health care workers; they are considered a credible source of health inf

Belief traps: Tackling the inertia of harmful beliefs.

Beliefs can be highly resilient in the sense that they are not easily abandoned in the face of counterevidence. This has the advantage of guiding consistent behavior and judgments but may also have destructive consequences for individuals, nature, and society. For instance, pathological beliefs can sustain psychiatric disorders, the belief that rhinoceros horn is an aphrodisiac may drive a species extinct, beliefs about gender or race may fuel discrimination, and belief in conspiracy theories can undermine democracy. Here, we present a unifying framework of how self-amplifying feedbacks shape

Harmonizing Image Forgery Detection & Localization: Fusion of Complementary Approaches.

Image manipulation is easier than ever, often facilitated using accessible AI-based tools. This poses significant risks when used to disseminate disinformation, false evidence, or fraud, which highlights the need for image forgery detection and localization methods to combat this issue. While some recent detection methods demonstrate good performance, there is still a significant gap to be closed to consistently and accurately detect image manipulations in the wild. This paper aims to enhance forgery detection and localization by combining existing detection methods that complement each other.

Like-minded sources on Facebook are prevalent but not polarizing.

Many critics raise concerns about the prevalence of 'echo chambers' on social media and their potential role in increasing political polarization. However, the lack of available data and the challenges of conducting large-scale field experiments have made it difficult to assess the scope of the problem1,2. Here we present data from 2020 for the entire population of active adult Facebook users in the USA showing that content from 'like-minded' sources constitutes the majority of what people see on the platform, although political information and news represent only a small fraction of these exp

Surveillance of bacterial disease in wartime Ukraine.

This analysis considers circulation of bacterial disease in wartime Ukraine. Anthrax, brucellosis, botulism and tularaemia are all naturally occurring in the country. The causative agents of these diseases also formed components of the biological weapons programme the Russian Federation inherited from the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War. Differentiating between natural and unnatural outbreaks of disease in Ukraine is essential for combating disinformation and maintaining health security as the war intensifies.

Social Media and the Influence of Fake News on Global Health Interventions: Implications for a Study on Dengue in Brazil.

Social media usage is growing globally, with an exponential increase in low- and middle-income countries. Social media changes the ways in which information-sharing occurs, intensifying the population's exposure to misinformation, including fake news. This has important repercussions for global health. The spread of fake news can undermine the implementation of evidence-based interventions and weaken the credibility of scientific expertise. This is particularly worrisome in countries, such as Brazil, in a sociopolitical context characterized by a lack of popular trust in public institutions. I
