A HEMODILUTION TECHNIQUE FOR OPEN-HEART SURGERY: A PRELIMINARY CLINICAL REPORT.

With the extension of open-heart procedures and the increasing success of open-heart surgery, a great strain has been placed on many hospital laboratories and on the Red Cross for the maintenance of equipment and the supply of blood. In order to decrease both of these needs, hemodilution techniques combined with disposable oxygenators have been introduced. The authors have used a disposable oxygenator with low molecular weight dextran prime, along with moderate hypothermia, in a consecutive series of 15 patients operated upon for congenital and acquired heart lesions. In this consecutive serie

Disposable Endoscope Cap Maintaining Clear Surgical Visualization under Fogging and Fouling.

Lens fogging and biological contamination are persistent unmet needs in endoscopic surgery that degrade visualization, disrupt procedural continuity, and compromise patient safety. To address these limitations, we have developed the superlubricious high-clarity interface for endoscopic lens defense cap (SHIELD-C), a single-use snap-on endoscope cap designed to maintain stable endoscopic visualization by forming a durable liquid-liquid interface on the cap surface. SHIELD-C employs a dual-layer architecture consisting of a covalently grafted polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) brush base layer and an i

[Expert consensus on the clinical application of single-use (disposable) flexible bronchoscopes].

Single-use (disposable) flexible bronchoscope is widely used clinically both in China and abroad and has become an important tool for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in respiratory diseases. The lightweight, portability, and non-reusability of the single-use flexible bronchoscope makes its use not only similar to that of conventional flexible bronchoscope, but with additional applications and indications. Currently, single-use flexible bronchoscopes are used in pulmonology, critical care medicine, infectious diseases, anesthesia, emergency departments and other clinical settings. Chinese

From outbreak of COVID-19 to launching of vaccination drive: invigorating single-use plastics, mitigation strategies, and way forward.

The unforeseen outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic has significantly stipulated the use of plastics to minimize the exposure and spread of the novel coronavirus. With the onset of the vaccination drive, the issue draws even more attention due to additional demand for vaccine packaging, transport, disposable syringes, and other allied devices scaling up to many million tonnes of plastic. Plastic materials in personal protective equipment (PPE), disposable pharmaceutical devices, and packaging for e-commerce facilities are perceived to be a lifesaver for the frontline healthcare personnel and the

Education and equipment for people who smoke crack cocaine in Canada: progress and limits.

BACKGROUND: People who smoke crack cocaine experience a wide variety of health-related issues. However, public health programming designed for this population is limited, particularly in comparison with programming for people who inject drugs. Canadian best practice recommendations encourage needle and syringe programs (NSPs) to provide education about safer crack cocaine smoking practices, distribute safer smoking equipment, and provide options for safer disposal of used equipment. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of NSP managers across Canada to estimate the proportions of NSPs that p

Effect of washing on quality, breathability performance and reusability of disposable face masks.

Disposable face masks are among the personal protective equipment (PPE) that highly contribute to protecting people in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Health authorities recommend wearing a mask as a barrier measure to limit the spread of viral respiratory diseases. During the first waves of the pandemic, besides professional high-quality PPE, decontaminated disposable mask reuse and homemade cloth masks were allowed due to scarcities. This work introduces a simple method based on-time history of the differential pressure, and an easy to use the setup for the testing of different

Reuse of Single-Use Devices in Endourology: A Review.

Introduction: Single-use medical devices (SUDs) are labeled for single use only, but rising health care costs along with the absence of visible deterioration in the quality of SUDs after one use have led to their reprocessing and reuse. In the past, SUDs mainly consisted of equipment such as guidewires and catheters. However, SUDs have now expanded to flexible endoscopes and energy devices that are much more expensive. Reuse of such devices raises concerns of infection transmission, safety, and lack of effectiveness. We reviewed the disinfection process, cost benefits, potential harms, and leg

[A race we must win: reuse of disposable products in the operating theater : The example of a nearly failed recycling concept].

Climate change due to the carbon footprint left by the modern lifestyle has become an irrefutable topic in today's media. The healthcare sector alone contributes ca. 5% of the world's CO2 emissions of which 25% comes from the operating theater. In order to spare personnel costs for sterilization, most medical suppliers of operating equipment have switched to the use of disposable products. In our pilot project in the department for thoracic surgery, we aim to recycle disposable Ethicon staplers used regularly in almost every operating theater. Since August 2022 we have succeeded in making the

Occupational contact allergic dermatitis in dentistry.

INTRODUCTION: Dental professionals may be at increased risk of developing occupational allergic diseases specially to methacrylates that can permeate protective disposable gloves. CASE REPORT: We presented a case of occupational allergic contact dermatitis in a 28-year-old dental technician. The patient had complained of itching and cracking of fingers for 6 months. The dermatitis improved over weekends. Skin erythema and scaling were present with primarily involvement of the fingertips. Patch testing with dental series gave positive vesicular reaction to methyl methacrylate. Follow-up after

Third Eye Retroscope: rationale, efficacy, challenges.

The most effective colonoscopy misses polyps, and both barium enema and computed tomography colonography studies have identified hidden areas on the proximal sides of folds, flexures, and valves where colonoscopy can miss even substantially sized lesions. This article reviews the rationale, efficacy, and clinical challenges associated with one of the most promising devices for improvement of mucosal exposure during colonoscopy, the Third Eye Retroscope (Avantis Medical, Sunnyvale, CA).
