Interidentity amnesia is considered a hallmark of dissociative identity disorder (DID) in clinical practice. In this study, objective methods of testing episodic memory transfer between identities were used. Tests of both recall (interference paradigm) and recognition were used. A sample of 31 DID patients was included. Additionally, 50 control subjects participated, half functioning as normal controls and the other half simulating interidentity amnesia. Twenty-one patients subjectively reported complete one-way amnesia for the learning episode. However, objectively, neither recall nor recogni

BACKGROUND: In accordance with the Theory of Structural Dissociation of the Personality (TSDP), studies of dissociative identity disorder (DID) have documented that two prototypical dissociative subsystems of the personality, the "Emotional Part" (EP) and the "Apparently Normal Part" (ANP), have different biopsychosocial reactions to supraliminal and subliminal trauma-related cues and that these reactions cannot be mimicked by fantasy prone healthy controls nor by actors.
METHODS: Arterial spin labeling perfusion MRI was used to test the hypotheses that ANP and EP in DID have different perfus

The ebb and flow of the diagnosis of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and other dissociative conditions has led to the evolution of theories and treatment modalities to resolve the fluctuating and ephemerous symptoms of these conditions. This paper summarizes the structured cognitive-behavioral-based treatment of dissociative disorders that will foster not only symptom relief but also an integration of the personalities and/or ego states into one mainstream of consciousness. This model of DID therapy is called the tactical integration model; it promotes proficiency over posttraumatic and d

OBJECTIVE: Child maltreatment, dissociation and dissociative disorders have been noted in relationship to eating disorders (EDs) for decades, and their co-occurrence generally is associated with greater morbidity, self-harm and mortality. The concomitant presentation of dissociative identity disorder (DID) with an ED (ED + DID) is especially challenging, and there is limited information on approaches to and the effects of integrated treatment for this serious comorbidity, especially in higher levels of care. There are also limited treatment resources for such patients, since they are often tur

The aim of the current study was to explore how the social stigmatization of dissociative identity disorder (DID) compared to that of schizophrenia and depressive disorders. Using a between-subjects experimental design, a total of 139 participants (126 usable data [39 men, 84 women, 3 other]) from the general population were randomly assigned to either a DID, schizophrenia, or depressive disorders experimental condition and responded to an adapted version of the Prejudice Toward People With Mental Illness (PPMI) Scale. Results suggested that, overall, depressive disorders were stigmatized agai

BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity involves the fear of anxiety-related symptoms and can exacerbate both major depressive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, it is unclear if anxiety sensitivity plays a similar role in dissociative identity disorder (DID) where symptoms of depression and PTSD commonly co-occur. We examined the association between anxiety sensitivity, depression, PTSD and dissociative symptoms in DID, hypothesizing a positive association between all symptoms and anxiety sensitivity.
METHOD: Participants were 21 treatment-seeking adult females with

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) revised the diagnostic criteria for dissociative identity disorder (DID) to more accurately reflect the symptom profile of DID patients. No study has examined how this change affects clinical diagnosis of DID. The present study examined clinician reports of patient symptoms in relation to DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5 DID diagnostic criteria. Data were analyzed from 169 clinicians who participated in the Treatment of Patients with Dissociative Disorders Network Study with a patient they assigned a DID diagnosis. Clinicians ev

OBJECTIVE: Some claim that treatment for dissociative identity disorder (DID) is harmful. Others maintain that the available data support the view that psychotherapy is helpful.
METHOD: We review the empirical support for both arguments.
RESULTS: Current evidence supports the conclusion that phasic treatment consistent with expert consensus guidelines is associated with improvements in a wide range of DID patients' symptoms and functioning, decreased rates of hospitalization, and reduced costs of treatment. Research indicates that poor outcome is associated with treatment that does not speci

A group of persons with dissociative identity disorder (DID) was compared with a group of persons with other dissociative disorders, and a group of nondiagnosed controls with regard to prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle reflex. The findings suggest maladaptive attentional processes at a controlled level, but not at a preattentive automatic level, in persons with DID. The prepulse occupied more controlled attentional resources in the DID group compared with the other two groups. Preattentive automatic processing, on the other hand, was normal in the DID group. Moreover, startle r

Dissociative identity disorder (DID), previously recognized as multiple personality disorder, impacts approximately 1.5% of the population. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), outlines various dissociative disorders (DDs), including depersonalization/derealization disorder, dissociative amnesia, DID, unspecified DD, and other specified DDs. Among these, DID stands out as the most severe, characterized by persistent depersonalization/derealization and dissociative amnesia. This case report explores the symptomatology of DID, availa

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a chronic post-traumatic disorder where developmentally stressful events in childhood, including abuse, emotional neglect, disturbed attachment, and boundary violations are central and typical etiological factors. Familial, societal, and cultural factors may give rise to the trauma and/or they may influence the expression of DID. Memory and the construction of self-identity are cognitive processes that appear markedly and centrally disrupted in DID and are related to its etiology. Enduring decoupling of psychological modes may create separate senses of s

Clinically derived theoretical models of dissociative identity disorder (DID) suggest that these individuals experience shifts in cognitive functioning between identity states. While prior research has found no objective inter-identity differences in memory, the present study investigated whether such differences are evident in a related cognitive domain: attentional processing. It was hypothesized that individuals with DID would exhibit differences in their attentional bias (AB) toward concern-related stimuli. They were compared to individuals with PTSD who experienced interpersonal childhood

A total of 75 patients were diagnosed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Dissociative Disorders-Revised as having dissociative identity disorder (DID), and 100 patients were diagnosed with the Structured Interview for DSM-IV Personality as having borderline personality disorder (BPD). Both groups were administered the Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation (MID). DID patients had significantly higher MID scores than BPD patients, different distributions of MID scores, and different MID subscale profiles in 3 ranges of MID scores (0-15, 15-30, 30-45). The core MID symptoms-ex

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is an uncommon disorder that has long been associated with exposure to traumatic stressors exceeding manageable levels commonly encompassing physical, psychological and sexual abuse in childhood that is prolonged and severe in nature. In DID, dissociation continues after the traumatic experience and produces a disruption in identity where distinct personality states develop. These personalities are accompanied by variations in behaviour, emotions, memory, perception and cognition. The use of literature in psychiatry can enrich comprehension over the subject

We present a case of a patient with dissociative identity disorder and symptomatic sleep apnea who was treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). CPAP use depended upon which personality the patient exhibited but apnea reduction did not. This case illustrates in one individual how personality can positively or negatively affect CPAP adherence.

The authors interviewed 118 highly dissociative inpatients in a Trauma Program with the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule, the Dissociative Experiences Scale and the Adverse Childhood Experiences questionnaire; of the 118 participants 42 met DSM-5 criteria for dissociative identity disorder and 52 for other specified dissociative disorder. The average score on the Dissociative Experiences Scale in the sample of 118 participants was 44.7. The authors also conducted semi-structured interviews inquiring about the circumstances and triggers for reversal of amnesia for childhood trauma in t

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) belongs to the complicated issues of psychiatry and psychology areas. The specificity of the disorder and its clinical picture imply numerous difficulties in the diagnosis and treatment process. The diagnosis of DID can also have significant legal consequences, especially in the context of criminal liability or the general ability to be a witness. Thus, DID is an interdisciplinary problem. In practice, DID is rarely diagnosed, although it is estimated that it occurs in about 1% of the general population. In many cases, the period from the first contact with
