Effects of UVC/H2O2 on dissolved organic matter derived from a cyanobacterial bloom.

Cyanobacterial blooms release complex metabolite mixtures, yet their degradation during water treatment remains poorly understood. This study investigates the degradation of cyanometabolite-rich natural bloom extracts using UVC/H2O2 to generate hydroxyl radicals (HO•). By applying LC-HR-MS/MS combined with computational metabolomics, we identified nine microcystins (MCs), four anabaenopeptins (APs), and sixteen microginins (MGs), proposing structures for five new congeners and two novel transformation products (TPs). UVC/H2O2 accelerated cyanopeptide degradation compared to individual control

Chemical structures of dissolved organic matter control mercury isotopic fractionation during methylmercury photodegradation.

Methylmercury (MeHg) photodegradation can induce mass-dependent (MDF) and mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of mercury (Hg) isotopes, providing useful information for fingerprinting the transformation and transport of Hg species. However, Hg isotopic fractionation during dissolved organic matter (DOM)-mediated MeHg photodegradation remains poorly understood, constraining environmental application of this isotopic tracer. In this study, several low-molecular-weight aromatic thiols were selected to investigate the influence of DOM chemical structures on Hg isotope fractionation during MeHg ph

Microplastic-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter Regulates Soil Carbon Respiration via Microbial Ecophysiological Controls.

Microbial regulation of soil carbon sequestration is vulnerable to anthropogenic stressors, notably microplastic pollution. Microplastics can release carbon-based compounds that serve as potential substrates for soil heterotrophic microbes. The impact of this novel microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) on soil carbon cycling and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Here, short-term soil microcosm experiments were conducted with MP-DOM sourced from pristine and aged microplastics to compare their effects on soil carbon respiration against natural dissolved organ

Soil-derived dissolved organic matter and nutrient sources from urban stormwater control measures.

There has been significant investment in stormwater control measures (SCM) to reduce erosion, filter pollutants, and mitigate peak storm flows within urban watersheds. SCMs have variable hydrologic connectivity to downstream waterbodies where SCMs may rapidly export water during storm events but dry up in-between events and these alternating wet/dry cycles influence the biogeochemical processes that occur in SCM soils. While the performance of SCMs has been evaluated for nutrient removal, less is known about the potential for mobilization of nutrients and dissolved organic matter (DOM) that ac

Temporal drivers of tryptophan-like fluorescent dissolved organic matter along a river continuum.

Tryptophan-like fluorescence (TLF) is used to indicate anthropogenic inputs of dissolved organic matter (DOM), typically from wastewater, in rivers. We hypothesised that other sources of DOM, such as groundwater and planktonic microbial biomass can also be important drivers of riverine TLF dynamics. We sampled 19 contrasting sites of the River Thames, UK, and its tributaries. Multivariate mixed linear models were developed for each site using 15 months of weekly water quality observations and with predictor variables selected according to the statistical significance of their linear relationsh

Comprehensive chemical characterization of dissolved organic matter in typical point-source refinery wastewaters.

In petroleum refineries, the electric desalting, distillation, and stripping processes could generate large amounts of wastewaters that contain toxic substances. In this study, eight wastewater samples were collected from the three typical refining processes for comprehensive chemical characterization of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) using excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Results showed that protein-like components and benzene were ubiquitous in all these

Characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in an urbanized watershed using spectroscopic analysis.

Landscape urbanization broadly alter watersheds ecosystems, yet the impact of nonpoint source urban inputs on dissolved organic matter (DOM) amount, composition and source is poorly understood. To systematically examine how DOM optical index and composition varied with urbanization, a unique long term observation dataset (4 years) of fluorescence excitation emission matrices (EEMs) was collected from two types of waters: urban waters and non-urban waters. Two humic-like DOM fluorescent components (C1 and C2) and one protein-like component (C3) were identified by parallel factor analysis (PARAF

[Effects of Feedstock Material and Pyrolysis Temperature on Dissolved Organic Matter in Biochars].

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of feedstock material and pyrolysis temperature on the content and spectral properties of dissolved organic matter(DOM) in biochars. Biochars were produced from the pyrolysis of rice straw and Cunninghamia lanceolata litter at three temperatures(350, 500, and 650℃). The results showed that the pH values of the two biochars with pyrolysis temperature increases were improved from 8.10 and 6.56 to 10.53 and 8.23, respectively. The pyrolysis temperature had no significant effect on the total C content of biochar, but the feedstock material and t

The comparison of dissolved organic matter in hydrochars and biochars from pig manure.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has an important effect on soil fertility, activity of microorganisms and transport of contaminants. In this study, DOM released by the hydrochar and biochar prepared under various conditions from pig manure, was assessed using a combination of UV-Visible spectroscopy, fluorescence excitation-emission (EEM) spectrophotometry and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) extracted from the hydrochar and biochar ranged from 3.34-11.96% and 0.38-0.48%, respectively, and the highest DOM was released by HCK0.5 (180 °C and 0.5% KOH). Th

[Composition, Evolution, and Complexation of Dissolved Organic Matter with Heavy Metals in Landfills].

Samples of wastes and leachates were collected from a landfill site and a leachate treatment plant[i.e., equalization basin, anaerobic zone, oxidation ditch, and membrane bioreactor (MBR) section]. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was extracted from the wastes and leachates, and its composition, evolution, and complexation characteristics with heavy metals were studied using UV-Visible and fluorescence spectroscopy combined with1H nuclear magnetic resonance. The aliphatic compounds were found to be the main substances in DOM in the fresh landfill wastes (<5 a), and the relative content of aromat

Solvent-Selective Complexity Reduction of Effluent Dissolved Organic Matter for 1H NMR Spectroscopy.

Processing of biomass residues for material and energy recovery generate effluents containing complex organic mixtures. Analyses of bulk parameters are conventional for characterization and classification of such effluents, where the limited information offered impedes the development of molecular level management practices. This study assessed the potential of solvent-selective complexity reduction of effluent dissolved organic matter (DOM) from anaerobic bioprocessing of biomass residues for 1H NMR spectroscopy. The DOM were acquired after filtration and drying of samples from seven full sca

Photoreactivity of dissolved organic matter drives abiotic vivianite formation at sediment-water interfaces.

Vivianite serves as a stable phosphorus sink in anaerobic sediments, playing a decisive role in mitigating internal phosphorus-loading and governing global P geochemical cycling. Typically concentrated at organic-rich sediment-water interfaces, vivianite formation is traditionally viewed through microbial ferric iron reduction, where dissolved organic matter (DOM) acts as a metabolic carbon source or an electron shuttle. However, these paradigms overlook the intrinsic semiconductor-like properties of DOM. Here, we demonstrate a previously unrecognized abiotic pathway whereby a DOM-mediated pho

Oxidation state of bioavailable dissolved organic matter influences bacterioplankton respiration and growth efficiency.

Oxygen consumption by oceanic microbes can predict respiration (CO2 production) but requires an assumed respiratory quotient (RQ; ΔO2/ΔCO2). Measured apparent RQs (ARQs) can be impacted by various processes, including nitrification and changes in dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition, leading to discrepancies between ARQ and actual RQ. In DOM remineralization experiments conducted in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean, ARQs averaged 1.39 ± 0.14, similar to predictions for complete consumption of plankton biomass. DOM removed with an elevated nominal oxidation state (i.e., more oxidized DOM)

Driving factors of colored dissolved organic matter dynamics across a complex urbanized estuary.

The role of estuaries in sourcing and transforming dissolved organic matter - the largest reservoir of organic carbon in the ocean - still presents many unknowns for coastal biogeochemical cycles, and is further complicated by increasing human pressures and a changing climate. Here, we examined the major drivers of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) dynamics in Long Island Sound (LIS), a heavily urbanized estuary of National Significance with a storied water quality past. A comprehensive new optical dataset, including measurements of CDOM absorption and fluorescence signatures, was integr

Iron Promotes the Retention of Terrigenous Dissolved Organic Matter in Subtidal Permeable Sediments.

Marine permeable sediments are important sites for organic matter turnover in the coastal ocean. However, little is known about their role in trapping dissolved organic matter (DOM). Here, we examined DOM abundance and molecular compositions (9804 formulas identified) in subtidal permeable sediments along a near- to offshore gradient in the German North Sea. With the salinity increasing from 30.1 to 34.6 PSU, the DOM composition in bottom water shifts from relatively higher abundances of aromatic compounds to more highly unsaturated compounds. In the bulk sediment, DOM leached by ultrapure wat

Transformation of dissolved organic matter in landfill leachate during a membrane bioreactor treatment.

In this study, a cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS) technique, Orbitrap fusion MS with ultrahigh resolution, was used to analyze the molecular composition, chemical properties, formation mechanism, and environmental impact of refractory dissolved organic matter (rDOM) in leachate. The results showed that the bioavailable DOM (bDOM) and rDOM constituents varied substantially during the biological treatment of landfill leachate. Compared with bDOM, the rDOM in leachate had a higher degree of unsaturation, aromaticity, and oxidation, and a larger molecular weight, and contained more organic matt

Spatial variation of organochlorine pesticides and dissolved organic matter in urban closed lakes.

Closed lakes located in urban parks act as sinks of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), which have been used, for decades, as insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. The closed lakes from Bucharest, Romania, are periodically managed to prevent eutrophication and accumulation of pollutants. However, it is not known if these practices reduce or enhance the legacy pollution with OCPs. The aim of this study was to explore the spatial variation of OCPs in closed lakes. The total concentration of OCPs in water and sediments ranged between 0.0176 and 37.1 µg/L, and between 122 to 1,890 ng/g, respectiv

Molecular insights into microbial transformation of dissolved organic matter from a wastewater treatment plant.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in treated wastewater influences effluent reactivity and ecological risks. How biological treatment configurations reshape DOM at the molecular level remains unclear. This study integrated molecular characterization, metagenomic microbial community analysis and metatranscriptomic functional profiling, machine-learning interpretation, and dynamic Partial Mantel Distance network analysis to compare DOM transformation in full-scale anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process (A2O) and oxidation ditch process (OD). The A2O exhibited a stronger redox-stage-dependent DOM remodeling

Heavy metals trigger distinct molecular transformations in microplastic-versus natural-derived dissolved organic matter.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a key determinant of heavy metal fate in aquatic environments, influencing their mobility, toxicity, and bioavailability. Derived from natural sources such as soil and vegetation decomposition, natural DOM (N-DOM) typically features humic-like substances with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups that stabilize heavy metals through complexation. However, microplastic-derived DOM (MP-DOM), increasingly prevalent due to plastic degradation, may interact differently with heavy metals, potentially exacerbating environmental risks amid rising plastic polluti

Potential retention of dissolved organic matter by soil minerals during wetland water-table fluctuations.

Wetlands export large amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) downstream, which is sensitive to water-table fluctuations (WTFs). While numerous studies have shown that WTFs may decrease wetland DOC via enhancing DOC biodegradation, an alternative pathway, i.e., retention of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by soil minerals, remains under-investigated. Here, we conducted a water-table manipulation experiment on intact soil columns collected from three wetlands with varying contents of reactive metals and clay to examine the potential retention of DOM by soil minerals during WTFs. Using batch so
