Repeated Bout Effect of Downhill Running on Physiological Markers of Effort and Post Exercise Perception of Soreness in Trained Female Distance Runners.

This study examined the effect of repeated bouts of level and downhill running on physiological markers of effort and exercise-induced muscle soreness in trained female distance runners. Ten participants (Age: 24.4 ± 2.0 years; V̇O2peak: 52.9 ± 1.1 mL·kg-1·min-1), naïve to downhill running, completed six alternate 5 min trials of level and downhill running (-15%) at a 70% velocity at V̇O2peak on two occasions, three weeks apart. Perceived muscle soreness was measured upon completion and in the 72 h post exercise. V̇O2, Heart Rate (HR), Blood Lactate (BLa), and Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER)

Effects of long-distance walking on socket-limb interface pressure, tactile sensitivity and subjective perceptions of trans-tibial amputees.

PURPOSE: Many trans-tibial amputees could not tolerate long-distance walking. Lack of walking could explain for the increased cardiovascular diseases mortality rate. This study investigated the effects of long-distance walking (LDW) on socket-limb interface pressure, tactile sensitivity of the residual limb, and subjective feedbacks, which potentially identified the difficulties in LDW. METHOD: Five male unilateral trans-tibial amputees walked on a level treadmill for a total of one hour at comfortable speed. Tactile sensitivity of the residual limb and socket-limb interface pressure during o

Does personality functioning influence perception of social distance amongst Czech students studying in an international university, a state university and the general population?

This study investigates the differences of personality functioning and attitudes toward minorities amongst Czech university students and the general population. Utilizing the newly developed scale measuring the concept of personality functioning (Level of Personality Functioning Scale - LPFS), the Modern Racism Scale (MRS), the Blatant and Subtle Prejudice Scale (BSPS) and the Bogardus Social Distance Scale, we compared 75 Czech students from an international university and a state university with 55 general population participants. The results show that students exhibited higher levels of imp

Role of dental training and distance of the observer on the perception of apically shifted gingival margin with increased vertical tooth size in the esthetic zone.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of the gingival contour on the smile esthetics. The influence of size, symmetry, teeth involved in apically shifted gingival margins, and the distance and clinical training of the observer were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two groups were identified: 33 first-year dental students (inexperienced) and 40 last-year students (trained). Each observer expressed four evaluations on four different images assigning a score from 0 to 10. Using a picture of an "ideal" female smile, 10 variants were virtually created by shifting (2 and 4 mm) the gingival cont

The influence of psychological distance and topic type on inter-brain synchronization of emotion perception during face-to-face communication: an fNIRS hyperscanning study.

Emotional perception plays a crucial role in social interaction; however, previous studies have majorly focused on static emotion perception rather than examining how emotions unfold during communication. Therefore, this study investigated how psychological distance (friends vs. stranger pairs) and topic type (shared vs. exclusive experiences) modulate inter-brain synchronization (IBS) during emotional communication, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The results showed that: (1) shared story (vs. exclusive story) elicited higher levels of emotion perception, both for self an

Assessing visuospatial perception in clinical and healthy populations: Test-retest reliability and smallest real difference of hill steepness estimation and the distance-on-hill task in virtual reality.

Theories of embodied perception posit that the visuospatial perception of one's environment is not only bound by features of the environmental itself, but also by the body capacity and affective state of the individual. Hill steepness and distance estimation tasks are widely used to assess the influence of physiological and psychological factors on visuospatial perception, but their test-retest reliability and measurement error are unknown. Such information is important to contextualise repeated measures study designs and understanding individual level differences. We aimed to evaluate the tes

Detecting binocular 3D motion in static 3D noise: no effect of viewing distance.

Relative binocular disparity cannot tell us the absolute 3D shape of an object, nor the 3D trajectory of its motion, unless the visual system has independent access to how far away the object is at any moment. Indeed, as the viewing distance is changed, the same disparate retinal motions will correspond to very different real 3D trajectories. In this paper we were interested in whether binocular 3D motion detection is affected by viewing distance. A visual search task was used, in which the observer is asked to detect a target dot, moving in 3D, amidst 3D stationary distractor dots. We found t

When purple perceived only at fixation: A fixation- and distance-dependent color illusion.

In this paper, an optical illusion is described in which purple elements are perceived as purple at the point of fixation, while surrounding elements of the same purple color are perceived toward a blue hue. As the viewing distance increases, a greater number of purple elements revert to a purple appearance.

Time-to-contact judgments of an approaching object that is partially concealed by an occluder.

Prior studies of time-to-contact (TTC) focused on judgments of unoccluded approaching objects. P. R. DeLucia, M. K. Kaiser, J. M. Bush, L. E. Meyer, and B. T. Sweet (2003) showed that partial occlusion decreases an object's optical size and expansion rate and that the value of tau derived from the reduced optical size (relative rate of accretion; RRA) does not necessarily correspond to TTC. In the present study, a computer-generated object approached the observer while unoccluded or partially concealed by a stationary or moving occluder. In some scenes, the occluder's motion nullified the obje

Perception of relative velocity: a revision of the hypothesis of relational determination.

The conventional formulation of the hypothesis of relational determination asserts that the perceived relative velocities of two or more objects depend upon their relative rates of displacement with respect to stationary referents in the visual field. Experiment 1 showed that this formulation is too restrictive by demonstrating the transposition-of-velocity effect under conditions in which two light spots moved in the absence of static visible contours and traversed unequal path lengths. Experiment 2 showed that angular velocity per unit of relative angular extent, and not relative linear or p

[Drawings by patients with unilateral visuospatial agnosia].

Drawings made by 25 patients with neurosurgical diseases causing focal lesions in the posterior areas of the right, not dominant cerebral hemisphere due to expanding changes. Experimental clinical investigations by the method of Luria demonstrated in these cases presence of left-sided visuospatial agnosia. The material was analysed from the point of view of the features of drawings characteristic for the syndrome of disturbances and the localizatory and diagnostic value of drawings. Characteristic disturbances of drawings and their placement were observed suggesting that the patients ignored t

Tactile adaptation transfers between distance and continuous size.

Tactile spatial perceived distance between two touches is larger on sensitive skin regions. While such distortions are substantial for the perception of distance between two distinct touches, they are significantly reduced when participants estimate the size of a single continuous object touching the skin. Here, we examine whether some of the mechanisms involved in processing the distance between two touches are shared with and influence those underlying the perception of continuous objects, leveraging adaptation aftereffects. In experiment 1, participants adapted to specific distances between

Observer movement and size constancy.

It is commonly assumed that size constancy-invariance of perceived size of objects as they change retinal size because of changes in distance-depends solely on retinal stimulation and vergence, but on no other action-related signals. Distance to an object can change through displacement of either the observer or the object. The common assumption predicts that the two types of displacement should lead to the same degree of size constancy. We measured size constancy while observers viewed stationary stimuli at different distances. Changes in distance between trials were either actively produced

Judgments of exocentric direction in large-scale space.

Judgments of exocentric direction are quite common, especially when judging where others are looking or pointing. To investigate these judgments in large-scale space, observers were shown two targets in a large open field and were asked to judge the exocentric direction specified by the targets. The targets ranged in egocentric distance from 5 to 20 m with target-to-target angular separations of 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees. Observers judged exocentric direction using two methods: (i) by judging which point on a distant fence appeared collinear with the two targets, and (ii) by orie

Estimating distance during self-motion: a role for visual-vestibular interactions.

A fundamental challenge for the visual system is to extract the 3D spatial structure of the environment. When an observer translates without moving the eyes, the retinal speed of a stationary object is related to its distance by a scale factor that depends on the velocity of the observer's self-motion. Here, we aim to test whether the brain uses vestibular cues to self-motion to estimate distance to stationary surfaces in the environment. This relationship was systematically probed using a two-alternative forced-choice task in which distance perceived from monocular image motion during passive

Relative eye height modulates perceived velocity of targets approaching along a horizontal plane.

Relative eye height, defined as the vertical distance between the observer's eye level and a target on the horizontal plane, provides a geometric cue to depth through the angle between eye level and the line of sight. In three-dimensional space, objects often move in depth at varying heights relative to the observer's eye level, requiring integration of multiple cues for accurate velocity judgments. However, the contribution of relative eye height to velocity perception remains unclear. This study examined how relative eye height influences perceived velocity for an approaching target moving a

Contribution of extraretinal signals to the scaling of object distance during self-motion.

We investigated the role of extraretinal information in the perception of absolute distance. In a computer-simulated environment, monocular observers judged the distance of objects positioned at different locations in depth while performing frontoparallel movements of the head. The objects were spheres covered with random dots subtending three different visual angles. Observers viewed the objects ateye level, either in isolation or superimposed on a ground floor. The distance and size of the spheres were covaried to suppress relative size information. Hence, the main cues to distance were the

Appetitive responses to computer-generated visual stimuli by the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola (Burr.).

Tethered adult female praying mantises, Sphodromantis lineola (Burr.), were presented with various computer-generated visual stimuli that moved against patterned or homogeneous white backgrounds in predetermined patterns and at predetermined speeds. The degrees to which the stimulus configurations elicited appetitive behaviors (attempting to approach and/or striking) indicated the relative degrees to which the stimuli were classified as prey. Mantises readily struck at cartoon "crickets" that subtended visual angles as great as 24.5 deg x 62.5 deg, but response rate was suppressed if the stimu

Distance heterophoria and tonic vergence.

It has previously been suggested that the difference between tonic vergence (TV) and distance heterophoria may relate either to proximally induced vergence or accommodative divergence. To identify which of these components was responsible for this difference, the present study compared TV and distance heterophoria in a population of 20 subjects. However, distance heterophoria was now assessed with open-loop accommodation. No significant difference was observed between these two measures. This suggests that the previously observed variations between TV and distance heterophoria (with accommodat
