INTRODUCTION: Daytime urinary incontinence (DUI) is defined as an involuntary leakage of urine during daytime in children 5 years or older. It is a common disorder in the pediatric population most often caused by an overactive bladder (OAB). A stepwise approach is recommended in the treatment of DUI, with standard urotherapy (SU) being first line treatment followed by pharmacological treatment when SU is unsuccessful. To our knowledge few studies have compared patients achieving continence solely on urotherapy with patients achieving continence on a combination of urotherapy and pharmacologica

Lower urinary tract symptoms, particularly urgency, frequency and incontinence are common in school-aged children but are often overlooked. They may cause considerable physical, social and psychological difficulties to children and their families, and usually are manifestations of underlying non-neurogenic voiding disorders. The differential diagnoses include overactive bladder syndrome, dysfunctional voiding and vaginal reflux as well as less common conditions like giggle incontinence, voiding postponement, pollakiuria and diabetes insipidus. In this paper, we discuss an evidence-based approa

OBJECTIVE: To establish baseline ADH levels in spinal cord injury patients and to evaluate whether spinal cord patients have attenuation of diurnal variation of ADH similar to children with enuresis and elderly with nocturnal polyuria.
DESIGN: Twenty-seven healthy quadriplegic patients, ASIA impairment scale A, were evaluated for serum ADH levels at night and during the day.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Evaluation of whether bladder overdistention caused by attenuation of diurnal variation of ADH is responsible for the episodes of autonomic dysreflexia and recurrent urinary tract infections in spi

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, parents of children with daytime urinary incontinence (UI) first consult general practitioners (GPs). However, GPs need more specific guidelines for daytime UI management, resulting in care and referral decisions being made without clear guidance.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify Dutch GP considerations when treating and referring a child with daytime UI.
METHODS: We invited GPs who referred at least one child aged 4-18 years with daytime UI to secondary care. They were asked to complete a questionnaire about the referred child and the management of daytime UI

BACKGROUND: Emotional problems are more common in children with urinary incontinence (UI). This study examines (i) if UI is related to changes in emotional problems over time and (ii) if changes in emotional problems over time are related to the subsequent risk of UI.
METHODS: The study is based on data from 8188 children aged 6¾-9 years (50.7 % females) from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Parents reported on their child's UI (bedwetting and daytime wetting) at 7½ and 9½ years and emotional problems (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) at 6¾ and 9½ years. We used a

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) is a common issue in children. Data on the prevalence of LUTD in our country are limited. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of LUTD among children in grades 1-8 in Zonguldak, located in northwestern Turkey, using a validated voiding dysfunction scoring system.
METHODS: The study included students in grades 1-8 from schools in central Zonguldak during the 2021-2022 academic year. Parents of children who were included in the study were sent a questionnaire via the Internet. Demographic information, the child's medica

PURPOSE: Endoscopic transurethral incision (TUI) of posterior urethral valve (PUV) can improve daytime urinary incontinence (DUI) and nocturnal enuresis (NE). However, the underlying mechanism has not been elucidated. In this study, we retrospectively examined the mobility of the urethra before and after TUI by measuring the urethral angle with voiding cystourethrography (VCUG), to clarify the effects of TUI on the morphology of the urethra during voiding.
METHODS: Between July 2010 and December 2014, 29 boys with intractable DUI and/or NE were diagnosed as PUV and underwent endoscopic TUI. V

Nocturnal enuresis (NE) can result from an interaction of unstable detrusor contractions, delayed arousal from sleep, and nocturnal polyuria. Some children with NE can hold urine well for several hours during the day and have isolated nocturnal enuresis, while others manifest diurnal voiding symptoms (DVS) as well, including urinary frequency, urgency, urge incontinence, and pelvic withholding. The pathogenesis of NE in patients with isolated NE may be different than in those with NE and DVS. In children with NE and DVS, detrusor instability may play a major role in the causation of their void

OBJECTIVES: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a frequent cause of admission to pediatric nephrology outpatient clinics. The aim of this study was to determine whether anatomical changes in lower urinary tract structures (retrovesical angulation [RVA] and bladder neck position [BNP]) are associated with UI in pediatric patients with daytime-wetting in comparison to healthy children.
METHODS: In this prospective study, patients with daytime UI diagnosed using the Dysfunctional Voiding Symptom Score of the International Children's Continence Society and 3-day-voiding/bowel diary were compared with an

AIM: We present our experience in the treatment of enuresis at the Pediatric Urology Outpatient Office over a period of four years. We report pertinent epidemiological data, diagnostic workup, as well as routine treatment protocol.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between April 1998 and May 2002, 142 healthy children, aged between 6.5 and 18 years (mean: 9 +/- 0.5 years), were referred to us for bedwetting. Ninety three of them were boys and 49--girls. Eight of them had also concurrent daytime enuresis. According to our protocol, the type of enuresis was identified (primary or secondary) and then we adm

Newer research results have shown that the previous classification of enuresis into nocturnal, nocturnal and diurnal and diurnal forms is not sufficient. Day wetting constitutes a heterogeneous group of syndromes, which should be considered as functional urinary incontinences and which require differentiated diagnostics and therapies. General aspects of functional urinary incontinence are discussed, including: classification, epidemiology, symptomatology, especially the association with urinary tract infections, vesicoureteral reflux, obstipation and encopresis. The rate of psychiatric problem

OBJECTIVES: Nocturnal enuresis is common in early childhood. While daytime bladder control typically precedes nighttime continence, the temporal relationship between early daytime bladder control and subsequent bedwetting remains unclear. We investigated whether daytime bladder control status at age 2.5 years-as indicated by diaper use-is associated with bedwetting at age 4.5 years in a Japanese nationwide cohort.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Japanese Longitudinal Survey of Newborns in the 21st Century (2010 cohort). Daytime bladder control was assessed at age 2.5 years through caregive

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and incontinence (nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI), fecal incontinence (FI)) are relevant disorders in childhood. In general, children with special needs such as intellectual disability (ID) or ASD are more often affected by incontinence than typically developing children.
OBJECTIVE: In the few studies conducted on children with ASD, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms have received more attention than NE, DUI and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of incontinence, LU

Nocturnal enuresis is common. Although its aetiology remains unclear recent evidence increasingly supports the lack of a normal nocturnal increase in ADH leading to nocturnal polyuria exceeding functional bladder capacity. Sleep patterns are probably normal although an arousal disorder might be a factor. Treatment should follow careful evaluation to determine if one is dealing with 'uncomplicated' or 'complicated' enuresis. Complicated enuresis requires further investigation. 'Uncomplicated enuresis' always requires reassurance and patient and parent education. Resource centres such as ERIC ca

Externalizing disorders as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) are common in children with nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI) and faecal incontinence (FI). We examined the prevalence rates of ADHD, ODD and incontinence in a defined geographical area and analysed the association between externalizing disorders and subtypes of incontinence. 1,676 parents of children who were presented at the mandatory school-entry medical examination completed a questionnaire with all DSM-IV items of ADHD, ODD and six questions regardin

AIMS: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) and daytime urinary incontinence (DUI) are often associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs). Among NDs, children with incontinence have a higher rate of developmental coordination disorder (DCD). It is not known if the associated deficits of neuromotor skills persist over time or if they are associated with treatment outcome. Therefore, the aim of the study was to examine the neuromotor skills in children with incontinence prospectively before and during treatment.
METHODS: 59 children with NE or DUI aged 5 to 14 years (mean age 8, 3 years; 38 boys; 21 gi

AIMS: Headaches in preschool children are associated with behavioral and gastrointestinal symptoms. As the co-occurrence with incontinence is not known in young children, the aim of the study was to examine associations of headache, psychological symptoms and nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI), and fecal incontinence (FI) in a population-based sample of preschool children.
METHODS: All preschool children of a defined geographical area were examined at school-entry. Parents completed a 22-item questionnaire, including 14 headache, 4 incontinence, and 25 items of the St

PURPOSE: We verify the sodium fraction excretion rate (FE Na) and potassium fraction excretion (FE K) rates in monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis. We also correlate FE Na and FE K to urinary osmolality, nocturnal polyuria and vasopressin in the same population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 438 children 6 to 15 years old (mean age 9.7) presenting with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis were recruited from different centers. Inclusion criteria were 3 or greater wet nights a week, no daytime incontinence and no treatment in the previous 2 months. Exclusion criteria were cardiopathy, endocri

OBJECTIVE: Many changes have occurred in the treatment of bladder exstrophy over the last few years and several repairs are now offered, but there is a lack of long-term follow-up data. The purpose of this study was to evaluate long-term outcomes in a select group of female patients in whom modern staged repair was undertaken.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From an institutionally approved database 41 patients were identified. All had undergone primary bladder exstrophy closure in 1988-2005, at a mean age of 2 months (range 4h to 3 months), with or without an osteotomy by a single surgeon, and all wer
