Ruminant stimulating device-associated esophageal obstruction in a Japanese black heifer with acquired esophageal diverticulum.

Esophageal diseases include esophageal obstruction, esophagitis, esophageal stricture, and esophageal diverticulum. Imaging can facilitate the selection of appropriate treatment options and assist in differential diagnosis. Esophageal obstruction in cattle is generally caused by greedy nature of chewing and swallowing of food and foreign structures, including stones, potatoes, trichobezoar, carrots, foodstuffs (i.e., hay), and rice chaff. Esophageal obstruction in cattle can also be caused by artificial procedures, and early detection and treatment are important to avoid severe esophageal inju

[Disorders of relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter after resection of mediothoracic esophageal pulsion diverticulum].

A pulsion diverticulum of the mid-thoracic oesophagus was resected because of severe dysphagia. A subdiverticular myotomy was associated for the treatment of non-propagated oesophageal contractions, without oesophageal low-sphincter abnormalities. Three months post-operatively, the dysphagia was still present and manometry showed the absence of lower sphincter relaxation after 45 percent of deglutitions; a lower oesophageal sphincter myotomy was performed, resulting in correction of the dysphagia and of the sphincter relaxation abnormalities. The deficit of the inhibitory nervous mechanism, re

Pediatric esophageal diverticulum following button batter ingestion. A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Foreign body ingestion is a frequent and potentially life-threatening concern in children, with button batteries being the second most frequently ingested object trailing coins. The mechanical and chemical impact of foreign objects on delicate esophageal lumen poses a grave concern. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we unveil a compelling case of a two-year-old girl who suffered from difficulty in swallowing, weight loss, and frequent chest infections. A chest X-ray revealed a halo sign within the confines of her thoracic esophagus. However, the formidable challenge of

Laparoscopic surgery for ventrally located epiphrenic diverticulum with esophageal achalasia.

Epiphrenic diverticulum is frequently associated with esophageal motility disorder, including esophageal achalasia. Heller's myotomy should accompany diverticulectomy to reduce the bulging pressure in surgery for epiphrenic diverticulum with esophageal achalasia. In such cases, designing myotomy is sometimes difficult, depending on the size and location of the diverticulum. Ventrally located diverticula require special caution to spare some muscular tissue between the longitudinal staple line of the diverticulectomy and myotomy, which is a crucial step to prevent staple-line dehiscence. In thi

[Tracheal diverticulum after surgical correction of esophageal atresia. 2 cases].

Two newborns with congenital oesophageal atresia (Gross type III) were successfully operated on during the neonatal period. The occurrence, several months later, of chronic cough, associated in one infant with impaired pulmonary ventilation, lead to the discovery of a tracheal diverticulum, on the pathway of the primitive tracheo-esophageal fistula. Surgical excision of the diverticulum was followed by complete recovery.

99mTc-Sestamibi Scintigraphy Reveals Parathyroid Adenoma Masquerading as Esophageal Diverticulum.

A 74-year-old woman with primary hyperparathyroidism diagnosed from routine laboratory tests described symptoms of fatigue and difficulty with concentration. During surgical consultation, the cervical and thoracic spine MRI scans from the preceding 10-year period, performed for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, were reviewed. In this clinical context, the slowly enlarging left upper paraesophageal lesion, reported as a lateral proximal esophageal (Killian-Jamieson) diverticulum, was reevaluated for a potential parathyroid adenoma. 99mTc-sestamibi SPECT/CT demonstrated focal uptake in the

Mid-Esophageal Diverticulum Mimicking an Aortic Aneurysm on Chest Radiography.

BACKGROUND: Mid-esophageal region is an uncommon location of esophageal diverticula, a condition usually diagnosed in elderly individuals. CASE REPORT: We report a case of an elderly male with incidental finding of mediastinal lesion, which was initially thought to be an aortic aneurysm. Further evaluation demonstrated a mid-esophageal diverticulum at the level of the carina. We present patient's medical history and imaging, followed by a discussion on symptoms and management. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of benign conditions that might mimic a mediastinal vascular pathology is important for thera

[A case report--congenital esophago-bronchial fistula with esophageal diverticulum].

Congenital esophago-bronchial fistula with diverticulum is rare, and in Japan only 29 cases have been reported. A 59-year-old man had suffered from recurrent pulmonary infections and often complained of coughing while drinking water during the previous two years. An UGI series for follow-up of gastric ulcer revealed an esophago-bronchial fistula, located between the mid-esophagus and B10 of the right lung. We resected the diverticulum and the fistulous tract with a partial excision of S10. Histological examination revealed that the squamous epithelium with the muscularis mucosa of the esophagu

Endoscopic treatment for dysphagia caused by mid-esophageal diverticulum and diffuse esophageal spasm: A case report.

BACKGROUND: A mid-esophageal diverticulum is an outpouching located in the midsection of the esophagus, posterior to the bifurcation of the right and left bronchi. The condition is characterized by an outward protrusion of the inner esophageal wall. Mid-esophageal diverticula are relatively rare and may coexist with diffuse esophageal spasm. However, the potential esophageal motility disorders associated with these lesions are frequently overlooked in clinical practice. The use of endoscopic interventions may offer a novel approach for the alleviation of dysphagia associated with this conditio

Benign Tracheoenteric Fistula to a Zenker's Diverticulum With Complete Esophageal Obstruction.

A fistula between a Zenker's diverticulum and the trachea has only been reported once, in 1983. Here, we report a case of a fistula between a large Zenker's diverticulum and the trachea with complete occlusion of the esophagus. The fistula was repaired, first by an esophageal myotomy, followed by proximal resection of the diverticulum, completion of the esophageal myotomy, transection of the fistula, and repair of the trachea. The surgical repair provided complete resolution of symptoms without complications.

A Patient with Vigorous Achalasia and Rapid Enlargement of an Epiphrenic Esophageal Diverticulum.

A 47-year-old man was found to have a 3-cm epiphrenic esophageal diverticulum on an upper gastrointestinal (UGI) barium study. He developed the symptoms of heartburn approximately 12 months later. UGI endoscopy indicated non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (NERD) and an epiphrenic esophageal diverticulum. A proton pump inhibitor (PPI) did not relieve the symptoms. An UGI barium study at that time showed that the epiphrenic esophageal diverticulum had enlarged to 7 cm, and esophageal manometry showed findings of achalasia and diffuse esophageal spasm (DES), thus vigorous achalasia was d

A Rare Case of Bleeding Epiphrenic Esophageal Diverticulum From Arteriovenous Malformations.

Epiphrenic esophageal diverticula (EED) is a rare condition that usually presents with dysphagia in patients with a known motility disorder. In this article, we present a unique case of EED presenting with hemoptysis with clinical workup negative for any pulmonary pathology. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed arteriovenous malformations within the EED successfully managed with argon plasma coagulation (APC), leading to a resolution of the patient's symptoms.

Mid-esophageal traction diverticulum: rare cause of massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Traction diverticula of the mid-esophagus are usually incidental findings on barium swallow or upper endoscopy. They are thought to arise secondary to adjacent inflammation in the mediastinum, usually from granulomatous infection such as histoplasmosis. They are usually asymptomatic. Rarely, erosion or extension of the inflammatory process into the adjacent lung or bronchial arteries can result in clinical symptoms such as pneumonia or gastrointestinal bleeding. Diagnosis is often delayed due to the rarity of clinical symptoms. We present a case of massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding due t

One stone two birds - Submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection for a large esophageal submucosal mass and esophageal diverticulum.

A-35-year-old woman presented our hospital with half a year's history of solid food dysphagia. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a large submucosal mass in an esophageal diverticulum near the gastroesophageal junction. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) confirmed a hypoechoic lesion arising from the muscularis propria layer with the size of 25*14 mm. Therefore, submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) was proposed to remove the large submucosal lesion in addition to targeted septotomy of the esophageal diverticula. A 2-cm longitudinal mucosal access was made at 3 cm above the submu

POEM-based endoscopic myotomy for esophageal diverticulum: a case series study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In recent years, the submucosal tunneling principle underlying Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) has emerged as a minimally invasive endoscopic option for the treatment of esophageal diverticulum (ED). However, evidence regarding its effectiveness across different types of ED remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of endoscopic myotomy for the management of esophageal diverticulum. METHODS: This single-center retrospective case series included patients with ED who underwent POEM-based endoscopic myotomy at the East Hospital Affiliat

Endoscopic esophageal reconstruction in epiphrenic diverticulum: septotomy-free diverticulectomy and suturing.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Epiphrenic diverticulum (ED) is a rare pulsion-type sac that typically develops secondary to esophageal motility disorders. Although surgical resection has been the standard treatment, advances in third-space endoscopy have introduced minimally invasive alternatives. We describe an endoscopic approach combining peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) with septotomy-free diverticulectomy and endoscopic suturing. METHODS: A 65-year-old man with spastic achalasia and ED underwent selective circular myotomy using the POEM technique. The diverticulum was inverted into the lumen, its

Surgical treatment for pharyngo-esophageal diverticulum: Consecutive series over 20 years.

BACKGROUND: Main treatment options for pharyngoesophageal diverticulum are the surgical excision or diverticulopexy, always associated with a myotomy, and the endoscopic peroral myotomy. The aim of this study was to describe the outcomes of a consecutive surgical series. METHODS: Observational study of patients who underwent open surgery (2004-2024) and who had a 2-years structured follow-up. Main outcome were symptom resolution and postoperative complications. Baseline characteristics, surgical technique, reinterventions, readmission and recurrence were also analyzed. Descriptive statistics
