The use of the diving reflex to terminate a case of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PST) is described in a 2-week-old infant who presented in severe congestive heart failure with supraventricular tachycardia at a rate of 300. The infant's face was placed in a basin of ice water at 5 degrees C. for 5 seconds with manual occlusion of the infant's nostrils to prevent aspiration. The PST converted to a sinus rhythm of 120 within 3 seconds of facial immersion. The physiology of the diving reflex is reviewed and the uses and hazards of this reflex in terminating attacks of PST in infants is

INTRODUCTION: Early childhood vision screening is critical for detecting amblyopia and other vision-threatening conditions. Despite screening recommendations during well-child visits, rates remain low. Red reflex assessment is recommended to identify serious ocular pathology, yet its use in primary care is not well described. We examined rates and drivers of vision screening in pediatric primary care.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of electronic health records for children 3-5 years attending well-child visits in 2022 in one of three representative primary care clinics within a

The physiopathology consequences of hypoxia during breath-hold diving are a matter of debate. Adenosine (AD), an ATP derivative, is suspected to be implicated in the adaptive cardiovascular response to apnea, because of its vasodilating and bradycardic properties, two clinical manifestations observed during voluntary apnea. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adenosine response to apnea-induced hypoxia in trained spearfishermen (SFM) who are used to perform repetitive dives for 4-5 h. Twelve SFM (11 men and 1 woman, mean age 41 ± 3 years, apnea experience: 18 ± 9 years) and 10 control (C

This hypothesis and overview of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) literature is an extension of a previously published hypothesis by the author, which linked the prone sleeping position and other triggers to the oxygen-conserving dive reflex as a primary cause of SIDS. Recent prospective epidemiologic and biochemical studies, together with other data, seem to lend support to the theory that this reflex, either induced or occurring spontaneously, may lead to an irreversible pathophysiologic mechanism resulting in respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. It will also be argued that SIDS is mult

Respiratory derangements, including irregular, tachypnic breathing and central or obstructive apnea can be consequences of seizure activity in epilepsy patients and animal models. Periods of seizure-associated central apnea, defined as periods >1s with rapid onset and offset of no airflow during plethysmography, suggest that seizures spread to brainstem respiratory regions to disrupt breathing. We sought to characterize seizure-associated central apneic episodes as an indicator of seizure impact on the respiratory rhythm in rats anesthetized with urethane and given parenteral kainic acid to in

1. Digital pressure applied to the eyes evokes reflex bradycardia in human subjects and anaesthetized dogs. The bradycardia is most pronounced when breathing stops. 2. In the dog oculo-cardiac reflex bradycardia is mediated by vegal stimulation and by sympathetic withdrawal. 3. Oculo-cardiac reflex bradycardia in the dog is reduced by central neural inspiratory activity and by the excitation of pulmonary afferents by inflation of the lungs. In human subjects it is reduced when inspiratory efforts are made against a closed glottis. 4. Nasopharyngeal stimulation with water evokes reflex bradycar

Voluntary apnea markedly attenuates exercise-induced increases in active muscle blood flow, a response known as the diving reflex, which is thought to preserve oxygen within the body. However, the underlying mechanisms of this response remain unknown. Since voluntary apnea elevates arterial CO2 partial pressure, which can induce vasoconstriction in active muscles during exercise, we hypothesized that arterial CO2 partial pressure modulates diving reflex-related regulation of active muscle blood flow. Fourteen young adults (1 female) performed maximal-duration breath-holding during a dynamic tw

Paediatric asthma is an increasing global healthcare problem for which current treatments are not always effective. This review explores how abnormal triggering of the autonomic diving reflex might be important in explaining research findings and the real-world experience of asthma. It hypothesises that the way in which stress during pregnancy is associated with childhood asthma could be through effects on the developing nervous system. This results in increased parasympathetic responsiveness and specifically, excessive triggering of the diving reflex in response to wetting and cooling of the

Recreational scuba diving is a popular leisure activity with the number of divers reaching several millions worldwide. Scuba diving represents a huge challenge for integrative physiology. In mammalian evolution, physiological reflexes developed to deal with lack of oxygen, rather than with an excess, which makes adaptations to scuba diving more difficult to describe and understand than those associated with breath-hold diving. The underwater environment significantly limits the use of equipment to register the organism's functions, so, in most instances, scientific theories are built on experi

INTRODUCTION: Human diving reflex is a well-studied phenomenon. However, very little is known about the possible relationship between augmented diving reflex and autonomic dysfunction.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied a group of four swimmers who underwent a diving reflex test as part of the examination due to symptoms related to autonomic dysfunction during swimming. The control group comprised 11 healthy swimmers with no history of these symptoms. A standardized diving reflex test was performed for each athlete in both groups. Hemodynamic profiles, including heart rate, stroke volume, an

Study of the reflex heart rate response in humans to apneic facial immersion (simulated diving) and its modifications showed that bradycardia caused by simple application of cold compresses to the face (cold face test) correlated well with that produced by the simulated diving reflex. Bilateral application of cold stimulus to the individual divisions of the trigeminal nerve revealed the ophthalmic division to be the most sensitive pathway for this reflex. The cold face test was standardized in 50 normal individuals and further validated in 10 patients by comparison with the simulated diving re

The bradycardial response to the diving reflex, which occurs in man and in diving animals, is thought to be a physiologically protective oxygen-conserving mechanism whereby the animal is kept alive during submergence. The physiology and nervous pathways are not yet fully understood, but several investigators have pointed out the potentially fatal outcome of an accentuated diving reflex. the CO2 content of the peripheral venous blood has been proved variable and unpredictable during the hyperventilation-breath-hold dive cycle in man. A group of 8 male divers (average age 34 years) was investiga

Intravenous injection of histamine to rabbits was used as a prototype in an investigation of the mechanism of sudden death due to anaphylaxis and other causes. The "dive" reflex, bradycardia due to activation of the ophthalmic branch of the fifth cranial nerve, was induced in thirty-seven of the animals while they inhaled a very small amount of cigarette smoke. Associated with the resulting bradycardia were lowered blood pH and increased serum content of lactic acid and potassium and increased peripheral arterial constriction with elevation of diastolic blood pressure. Intravenous injection of

BACKGROUND: Scuba divers are subjected to relatively high ambient pressures while descending. Equalizing maneuvers (e.g., Valsalva) are necessary to open the Eustachian tube (ET) and allow air into the middle ear (ME) cavity. Insufficient opening of the ET leads to ME barotrauma, which is the most common injury related to scuba diving. The study aims were to assess the incidence of ME barotrauma and to compare tympanometric parameters and stapedial reflexes in scuba divers and non-diving individuals.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:: 60 scuba divers participated in the study; control consisted of 90 non

The dive response, bradycardia (decreased heart rate) and peripheral vasoconstriction, is the key mechanism allowing breath-hold divers to perform long-duration dives while actively swimming and hunting prey. This response is variable and modulated by factors such as dive duration, depth, exercise and cognitive control. This study assessed the potential role of exercise and relative lung volume in the regulation of heart rate (fH) during dives of adult female California sea lions instrumented with electrocardiogram (ECG), depth and tri-axial acceleration data loggers. A positive relationship b

The diving response is a cardiorespiratory reflex characterized by apnea, bradycardia and increased peripheral vascular resistance when animals submerge underwater. Afferent information initiating this reflex response projects from the nasal mucosa via trigeminal nerves to activate second-order afferent neurons within the medullary dorsal horn (MDH). The present study investigated the synapse between these trigeminal nerves and MDH neurons, specifically what neurotransmitter receptors are expressed by MDH neurons activated during diving. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to dive repetitive

Diving bradycardia is a primordial oxygen-conserving reflex by which the heart rate of air-breathing vertebrates, including humans, slows down in response to water immersion. Its discovery is attributed to Paul Bert, whose seminal observation was published in 1870 as part of a series of experiments that examined physiological adaptations to asphyxia in ducks and other animals. However, Edmund Goodwyn, a British physician who studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, had already described this reflex in his doctoral thesis, which was originally published in Latin in 1786 and again in Eng

INTRODUCTION: Otolith function, which is dependent on linear velocity and acceleration, may be expected to change in underwater divers, who are submerged in a medium that is denser than air. The purpose of the present study was to examine possible changes in the sacculocollic reflex of professional divers and to investigate whether there might be diving-induced adaptation of the saccular response.
METHODS: We used the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) response to evaluate saccular function in 12 professional divers shortly after a dive and after an interval of at least 24 h. The con
