Effects of binocularity and eye dominance on visually-driven ocular tracking.

INTRODUCTION: We used 18 oculomotor performance metrics (oculometrics) to capture largely independent features of human ocular tracking. Our primary goal was to examine tracking eye movements in a healthy population under monocular and binocular viewing, as well as to examine the potential effects of line-of-sight eye dominance and spatial/directional tuning. METHODS: We compared the ocular responses of 17 healthy well-rested participants using a radial step-ramp paradigm under three viewing conditions: both-eyes viewing, left-eye viewing, and right-eye viewing. RESULTS: Our findings reveale

Bidirectional ocular dominance plasticity of inhibitory networks: recent advances and unresolved questions.

Monocular visual deprivation (MD) produces profound changes in the ocular dominance (OD) of neurons in the visual cortex. MD shifts visually evoked responses away from the deprived eye and toward domination by the open-eye. Over 30 years ago, two different theories were proposed to account for these changes: either through effects on excitatory visual drive, thereby shifting the balance of excitation in favor of the open-eye, or through effects on intracortical inhibition, thereby suppressing responses from the deprived eye. In the intervening years, a scientific consensus emerged that the maj

Interaction of noradrenergic and cholinergic systems in regulation of ocular dominance plasticity.

We studied interactions among the noradrenergic (NA) and the muscarinic cholinergic (ACh) systems in the regulation of ocular dominance plasticity in kitten visual cortex. The cortex was bilaterally infused with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) for a week. Upon termination of the 6-OHDA infusion, one hemisphere was infused with a muscarinic ACh agonist, bethanechol, through the same, chronically implanted cannula for the second week together with monocular lid suture. The other hemisphere received an infusion of the vehicle solution alone. (1) Only in the hemisphere infused with bethanechol at relat

The critical period for ocular dominance plasticity in the Ferret's visual cortex.

Microelectrode recordings and optical imaging of intrinsic signals were used to define the critical period for susceptibility to monocular deprivation (MD) in the primary visual cortex of the ferret. Ferrets were monocularly deprived for 2, 7 or >14 d, beginning between postnatal day 19 (P19) and P110. The responses of visual cortical neurons to stimulation of the two eyes were used to gauge the onset, peak, and decline of the critical period. MDs ending before P32 produced little or no loss of response to the deprived eye. MDs of 7 d or more beginning around P42 produced the greatest effects.

Role of visual acuity, stereoacuity, and ocular dominance in monovision patient success.

Monovision (MV) contact lens correction of presbyopia induces substantial reductions in stereoacuity and small reductions in binocular visual acuity (VA). This study examined those effects in a group of successful and a group of unsuccessful MV patients. Compared to performance with a full binocular correction, the unsuccessful group demonstrated significant losses in both functions. These reductions were smaller in the successful group and of marginal statistical significance only for stereoacuity. Laterality of sighting dominance and laterality of distance/near correction had minimal effect

Baicalin reactivates ocular dominance plasticity to restore vision from amblyopia in adult mice.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by reduced visual acuity due to abnormal visual experience during critical periods. In adulthood, the diminished plasticity of the primary visual cortex (V1) presents a major barrier to effective treatment. Here, we investigate whether baicalin, a flavonoid derived from Scutellaria baicalensis, can restore ocular dominance plasticity (ODP) and promote functional recovery in a mouse model of adult amblyopia. Using intrinsic signal optical imaging and electrophysiological recording, we demonstrate that 10 mg/kg baicalin treatment reactivat

Causal role of the frontal eye field in attention-induced ocular dominance plasticity.

Previous research has found that prolonged eye-based attention can bias ocular dominance. If one eye long-termly views a regular movie meanwhile the opposite eye views a backward movie of the same episode, perceptual ocular dominance will shift towards the eye previously viewing the backward movie. Yet it remains unclear whether the role of eye-based attention in this phenomenon is causal or not. To address this issue, the present study relied on both the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) techniques. We found robust activation of the front

Difference in binocularity and ocular dominance plasticity between GABAergic and excitatory cortical neurons.

Neuronal circuits in the cerebral cortex consist mainly of glutamatergic/excitatory and GABAergic/inhibitory neurons. In the visual cortex, the binocular responsiveness of neurons is modified by monocular visual deprivation during the critical period of postnatal development. Although GABAergic neurons are considered to play a key role in the expression of the critical period, it is not known whether their binocular responsiveness and ocular dominance plasticity are different from those of excitatory neurons. Recently, the end of the critical period was found to be not strict so that cortical

Functional masking of deprived eye responses by callosal input during ocular dominance plasticity.

Monocular deprivation (MD) is a well-known paradigm of experience-dependent plasticity in which cortical neurons exhibit a shift of ocular dominance (OD) toward the open eye. The mechanisms underlying this form of plasticity are incompletely understood. Here we demonstrate the involvement of callosal connections in the synaptic modifications occurring during MD. Rats at the peak of the critical period were deprived for 7 days, resulting in the expected OD shift toward the open eye. Acute microinjection of the activity blocker muscimol into the visual cortex contralateral to the recording site

Homeostatic regulation of eye-specific responses in visual cortex during ocular dominance plasticity.

Experience-dependent plasticity is crucial for the precise formation of neuronal connections during development. It is generally thought to depend on Hebbian forms of synaptic plasticity. In addition, neurons possess other, homeostatic means of compensating for changes in sensory input, but their role in cortical plasticity is unclear. We used two-photon calcium imaging to investigate whether homeostatic response regulation contributes to changes of eye-specific responsiveness after monocular deprivation (MD) in mouse visual cortex. Short MD durations decreased deprived-eye responses in neuron

Perceptual ocular dominance plasticity is resilient to concurrent attentional demands in working memory.

Short-term monocular deprivation (MD) in adult humans induces a notable shift in perceptual ocular dominance towards the deprived eye. This form of visual plasticity has been proposed to share common mechanisms with other types of plasticity, such as those supporting working memory, based on a recent finding that the MD effect is impaired when a visual working memory task is performed concurrently. However, in that study, the visual content of the tasks and their attentional demands were not strictly controlled. To revisit the modulatory role of working memory in perceptual ocular dominance pl

Ocular dominance and its association with retinal thickness profile - A cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: The retinal thickness profile is essential for detecting ocular diseases like glaucoma and other optic neuropathies. The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness is affected by age, ethnicity, axial length, optic disc area, and inter-eye differences. Ocular dominance has a strong functional correlation with cerebral cortical activity. However, its relationship with RNFL thickness profile is yet to be fully established. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 136 healthy adults to study the association between ocular dominance and RNFL parameters measured by Spectral domai

How Ocular Dominance and Binocularity Are Reflected by the Population Receptive Field Properties.

PURPOSE: The neural substrate of binocularity and sighting ocular dominance in humans is not clear. By utilizing the population receptive field (pRF) modeling technique, we explored whether these phenomena are associated with amplitude and pRF size differences. METHODS: The visual field maps of 13 subjects were scanned (3-T Skyra) while viewing drifting bar stimuli. Both eyes (binocular condition), the dominant eye and the nondominant eye (two monocular conditions) were stimulated in separate sessions. For each condition, pRF size and amplitude were assessed. Binocular summation ratios were c

Cross-modal Restoration of Juvenile-like Ocular Dominance Plasticity after Increasing GABAergic Inhibition.

In juvenile and young adult mice monocular deprivation (MD) shifts the ocular dominance (OD) of binocular neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) away from the deprived eye. However, OD plasticity is completely absent in mice older than 110 days, but can be reactivated by treatments which decrease GABA levels in V1. Typically, these OD shifts can be prevented by increasing GABAergic transmission with diazepam. We could recently demonstrate that both bilateral whisker and auditory deprivation (WD, AD), can also restore OD plasticity in mice older than 110 days, since MD for 7 days in WD mice

Ocular dominance, coexistent retinal disease, and refractive errors in patients with cataract surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this article is to highlight some common issues when planning cataract surgery in patients with preexisting ocular pathologies and to assess the role of ocular dominance in cataract surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: In addition to routine ocular examination, determination of ocular dominance and orthoptic evaluation for tropias, phorias, amblyopia, and diplopia can be helpful in planning for cataract surgery as these factors can affect postoperative outcomes. Although once controversial, cataract surgery by phacoemulsification is often a well tolerated and effective

On the Maintenance of Normal Ocular Dominance and a Possible Mechanism Underlying Refractive Adaptation.

PURPOSE: Do humans with uncorrected anisometropia who have not developed anisometropic amblyopia exhibit a shift in ocular dominance nonetheless, reflecting a more subtle form of deprivation? Also, is such a change in dominance, if it occurs, permanent or could it be rectified by an extended period of optical correction? METHODS: A total of 25 normal controls (27.5 ± 2.1 years; mean ± SD); 28 anisometropes (20.7 ± 5.6 years) who were fully corrected for more than 16 weeks prior to this investigation; and 24 anisometropes who had never been corrected (21.2 ± 9.8 years) participated in this stu

Recent Advances in the Molecular Mechanisms of Ocular Dominance Plasticity in the Visual Cortex.

The visual cortex is an essential part of the brain for processing visual information. It exhibits structural and functional plasticity, which is crucial for adapting to complex visual environments. The quintessential manifestation of visual cortical plasticity is ocular dominance plasticity during the critical period, which involves numerous cellular and molecular events. While previous studies have emphasized the role of visual cortical neurons and their associated functional molecules in visual plasticity, recent findings have revealed that structural factors such as the extracellular matri

Amblyopia induced by anisometropia without shrinkage of ocular dominance columns in human striate cortex.

Amblyopia can be induced by opacity of the ocular media (e.g., cataract), misalignment of the ocular axes (strabismus), or unequal refractive error in the eyes (anisometropia). Experiments in monkeys have shown that early monocular eyelid suture, a model of amblyopia caused by cataract, results in shrinkage of the eye's ocular dominance columns in striate cortex. This reduction of the geniculocortical projection from the deprived eye has been thought to explain in part the mechanism of amblyopia. We labeled the ocular dominance columns in monkeys with amblyopia by using cytochrome oxidase hist
