Male and female albino rat pups sustained septal destruction at 10 days of age and body weight and water intakes were measured daily throughout development until 200 days of age. During development the septal and control rats received a battery of drinking tests (e.g., cellular dehydration, hypovolemia, renin). Septal rats (males and females) were hyperdipsic for daily water intakes as early as 31 days of age and the daily hyperdipsia persisted through 200 days of age. On the battery of drinking tests, septal rats consumed water at control volumes on all tests except water deprivation (followi

BACKGROUND: Heavy alcohol drinking has aspects of inflexible behavior. This study addressed the consequences of chronic alcohol drinking on cognitive and sensory-motor domains of behavioral flexibility in rhesus monkeys.
METHODS: Behavioral flexibility was assessed in 12 monkeys (n = 9, ethanol [EtOH] drinkers) with a set-shifting visual discrimination procedure before alcohol self-administration and while maintaining consumption of 1.5 g/kg/d EtOH. Task performance was assessed in the morning after ~18 hours of drinking 1.5 g/kg, and 1 hour before the next day's drinking session began. The f

Behavioral and psychosocial correlates of drinking and driving were examined in two independent samples of licensed drivers aged 18 to 25 selected from the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles database. Mail questionnaires were returned by 2,300 young adults (1,196 in Sample 1; 1,104 in Sample 2). Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relation of a latent-variable measure of drinking-driving to latent-variable measures of other driving behaviors, problem behaviors and psychosocial variables. Drinking-driving, drug-driving and risky driving were found to comprise a more general, s

BACKGROUND: Acetaldehyde (AcH), a highly reactive metabolite of ethanol, plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Post alcohol consumption, AcH generated in hepatocytes is further metabolized into acetate by aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) or excreted into circulation and bile via the basolateral and apical membranes, respectively. Our previous studies have demonstrated that aquaporin 8 (AQP8), which is a water channel and mainly expressed on the apical membrane, facilitates AcH excretion into bile. AQP9 is predominantl

BACKGROUND: Rodent models have explored the transition from controlled goal-directed consumption to habitual/compulsive intake using different procedures. This study evaluates the effect of concurrent presentation of sucrose on alcohol intake using two models that induce high levels of alcohol intake in mice that experienced chronic intermittent ethanol (CIE) exposure and/or stress.
METHODS: In Experiment 1, male mice were exposed to four cycles of CIE or control (air) exposure, and once an increase in voluntary alcohol was observed in CIE mice, mice were offered a choice between alcohol or i

Cholinergic muscarinic stimulation of vast areas of the limbic brain induced a well-documented polydipsia in laboratory rats. This excessive water-drinking behavior has not received any convincing biological and physiological interpretation for the last 50 years. This review offers such an interpretation and suggests that cholinergically induced drinking response, mostly by carbachol, is associated with activation of the ascending mesolimbic cholinergic system that serves for initiation of emotional aversive arousal of the organism. The ascending cholinergic system originates from the laterodo

Puerarin, daidzin, and daidzein are 3 major isoflavonoid compounds isolated from Pueraria lobata, an edible vine used widely in China for various medicinal purposes. We studied the antiinebriation and the antidipsotropic effects of these antioxidants in rats. Daidzin and daidzein shortened alcohol-induced sleep time (loss of righting reflex) in rats that were given ethanol intragastrically but not in those given ethanol intraperitoneally. When daidzin was given to animals intragastrically with the ethanol solution, the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was found to peak later and be lower than

This review discusses efforts to develop rodent models for the study of neurobiological mechanisms underlying chronic alcohol drinking, alcoholism, and abnormal alcohol-seeking behavior. Selective breeding has produced stable lines of rats that reliably exhibit high and (for comparison purposes) low voluntary alcohol consumption. In addition, animal models of chronic ethanol self-administration have been developed in rodents, who do not have a genetic predisposition for high alcohol-seeking behavior, to explore environmental influences in ethanol drinking and the effects of physical dependence

Nest building is a natural behavior that can readily be analyzed in mice in the home cage environment. Nest building is involved in thermoregulation, positive motivational states, and motor function, and has been proposed as an index for ethanol withdrawal severity in mice. However, nest building outcomes after voluntary ethanol consumption have not been examined. Here, we tested male and female C57BL/6J mice on a 4-day drinking in the dark (DID) paradigm of binge-like drinking with either ethanol or a water control and analyzed nest scores at two time points (48 hours and 7 days) after the la

1. The present study was performed to examine the effect of naloxone on drinking behavior in three schizophrenic inpatients with psychosis, intermittent hyponatremia, and polydipsia. 2. Their body weight were checked five times daily and the maximum weight gain during a day was chosen as an index of their polydipsia. 3. After control recording for six weeks, a daily naloxone (0.6 mg) injection series was performed once every two weeks for three series (six weeks). Withdrawal of this drug for six weeks resulted in weight gain recovering to control level. 4. The present study showed that naloxon

The goal of the current investigation was to address whether affective decision making would serve as a unique neuropsychological marker to predict drinking behaviors among adolescents. We conducted a longitudinal study of 181 Chinese adolescents in Chengdu city, China. In their 10th grade (ages 15-16), these adolescents were tested for their affective decision-making ability using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and working memory capacity using the Self-Ordered Pointing Test. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess academic performance and drinking behaviors. At 1-year follow-up, questio

PURPOSE: This study examined relationships between energy drink consumption and problem behaviors among adolescents and emerging adults. It was hypothesized that frequent consumption of energy drinks would be positively associated with substance abuse and other risky behaviors, and that these relationships would be moderated by race.
METHODS: Cross-sectional, self-report survey data were collected from 602 Western New York undergraduate students in the spring of 2006. Differences in problem behaviors by frequency of energy drink consumption were assessed with multivariate linear and logistic

Amylin, a peptide hormone secreted by pancreatic beta-cells after food intake, contributes to metabolic control by regulating nutrient influx into the blood, whereas insulin promotes nutrient efflux and storage. We now report that amylin activates neurons in the subfornical organ (SFO), a structure in which the lack of a functional blood-brain barrier and the presence of a high density of amylin receptors may render it accessible and sensitive to circulating amylin. In an in vitro slice preparation of the rat SFO, 73% of 78 neurons were excited by superfusion with rat amylin (10(-8)-10(-7) M);

With the global increase in alcohol consumption, the incidence of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is rising significantly. However, not all individuals who consume alcohol develop ALD, suggesting the influence of various mediating factors. While sex, age, and genetic predisposition have been widely studied, the impact of drinking patterns as direct behavioral factors remains underexplored. We introduce the concept of "drinking pattern", which refers to the behavioral characteristics and habits exhibited by an individual during alcohol consumption. An important research question arises:

Binge eating and binge drinking are two of the most common health-risk behaviors among young people showing to frequently co-occur in nonclinical samples of adolescent boys and girls. The present study examined the role of different dimensions of family functioning in binge behaviors among adolescents. One thousand and twenty young to late adolescents (507 girls and 517 boys) with ages ranging from 16 to 22 years participated in the study and completed a survey of self-report measures. Our findings showed that adolescents who binge eat and drink and adolescents who only binge eat perceived a l

Despite decades of education and enforcement campaigns, alcohol-impaired driving persists as a social problem in the U.S. Are there other factors influencing decisions to drive after alcohol consumption that may be amenable to change? We conducted a roadside survey in California in 2012 to assess whether residential accessibility, travel attitudes (indicated by ratings of convenience and safety for travel options), and perceptions of arrest risk affect travel choices made subsequent to alcohol consumption. We conducted hybrid choice modeling for 580 participants. Mode-specific travel attitudes

Approximately 37% of college students report heavy episodic drinking (5 or more drinks in an occasion for men and 4 or more for women) in the past month. This pattern of drinking is often associated with high blood alcohol levels, accidents, injuries, and negative social and academic outcomes. There is a need for novel theoretical approaches to guide prevention efforts. Behavioral economics emphasizes the role of contextual determinants, such as drink price and the presence and amount of alternative reinforcement as determinants of drinking levels and has received strong empirical support in b

BACKGROUND: This report assessed the proportion of US 10th graders (average age, 16) who saw a physician in the past year and were asked and given advice about their drinking. We hypothesized that advice would vary by whether students were asked about drinking and their drinking, bingeing, and drunkenness frequency.
METHODS: A nationally representative sample of 10th graders in 2010 (N = 2519) were asked their past 30-day frequency of drinking, bingeing, and intoxication and whether, during their last medical examination, their drinking was explored and they received advice about alcohol's ri

Early methylmercury (MeHg) exposure can have long-lasting consequences likely arising from impaired developmental processes, the outcome of which has been exposed in several longitudinal studies of affected populations. Given the large number of newborns at an increased risk of learning disabilities associated with in utero MeHg exposure, it is important to study neurobehavioral alterations using ecologically valid and physiologically relevant models. This review highlights the benefits of using the MeHg drinking water exposure paradigm and outlines behavioral outcomes arising from this proced
