Does Housing Eviction Modify the Effects of Alcohol Outlet Density on Hospitalizations for Assault and Alcohol Use Disorder in Pennsylvania?

BACKGROUND: Examining how the relationship between alcohol outlet density and alcohol-related harms may vary by neighborhood-level factors is important for informing the evaluation and implementation of environmental alcohol interventions and identifying other community conditions that can be modified to reduce alcohol-related harms and inequities. This study aims to extend prior research by testing whether housing eviction-a cause of housing insecurity and neighborhood destabilization-modifies the impact of alcohol outlet density on hospitalizations for assault and alcohol use disorder (AUD)

Surface swabbing of nightclub venues to monitor the presence of cocaine, ketamine, and MDMA.

Background: The drug landscape in the US is rapidly shifting, and alternate methods of drug surveillance that do not involve human subjects may help overcome limitations of current methods. In this study, we focus on nightclubs, where use of cocaine, ketamine, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is prevalent. Objectives: In this proof-of-concept study, we assessed the feasibility of surface swabbing in nightclub venues in New York City as an environmental method for monitoring the presence of commonly used party drugs, and we compared findings from swabs collected from non-nightclub pu

Gender-based violence, alcohol use, and sexual risk among female patrons of drinking venues in Cape Town, South Africa.

Gender-based violence is a well-recognized risk factor for HIV infection among women. Alcohol use is associated with both gender-based violence and sexual risk behavior, but has not been examined as a correlate of both in a context of both high HIV risk and hazardous drinking. The purpose of this paper is to examine the association between recent abuse by a sex partner with alcohol and sexual risk behavior among female patrons of alcohol serving venues in South Africa. Specifically, the aim of this study is to determine whether sexual risk behaviors are associated with gender-based violence af

AIDS-related stigma, HIV testing, and transmission risk among patrons of informal drinking places in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: AIDS-related stigma as a barrier to HIV testing has not been examined within the context of high at risk environments such as drinking venues. Of particular importance is whether AIDS-related stigma is associated with HIV transmission risks among people who have never been tested for HIV. PURPOSE: We examined: (1) AIDS-related stigma as a barrier to testing, controlling for other potential barriers, and (2) whether stigma is associated with HIV risks among HIV-untested individuals. METHODS: We surveyed 2,572 individuals attending informal drinking establishments in Cape Town, Sou

How do residents perceive alcohol availability and its impact on drinking behaviour? A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Reducing alcohol availability has been identified as a potential approach to reduce alcohol use and related harm. In order to regulate alcohol availability at a local level, it is important to involve communities in decision-making and ensure interventions are locally acceptable and appropriate. To do this, we need to improve our understanding of how residents conceptualise alcohol availability and its impact on behaviours. This paper uses data collected in Scotland, a country with particularly high levels of alcohol-related harm, to explore the perspectives of residents, on loca

Compliance with smoke-free laws in hospitality venues in Ethiopia: qualitative insights into barriers and facilitators using the tobacco control theoretical framework.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has made significant strides in adopting comprehensive smoke-free laws aligned with the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which mandates that all public places, including hospitality venues, public transportation, and workplaces, be 100% smoke-free. However, effective implementation across regions remains uneven. This study examines the barriers and facilitators influencing the enforcement of smoke-free legislation in Ethiopia. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in 10 major cities in Ethiopia, involving 41 key informant interv

Association between Levels of Alcohol Use, Perceived HIV Risk, and Untreated HIV Among Persons at Alcohol-Serving Venues in Kenya and Uganda.

Alcohol-serving venues in East Africa are high-risk environments for HIV transmission but few studies in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have examined perceived HIV risk and sexual risk behaviors by alcohol use levels on a broader population of persons at alcohol-serving venues in the era of biomedical HIV prevention. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of adults (≥ 18 years) at alcohol-serving venues in eight communities (~ 10,000 residents/community) in rural western Kenya and southwestern Uganda. We distributed recruitment cards to patrons and workers and invited them for free HIV screening at

Trends in Past-Year Use of Poppers Among New York City Nightclub Attendees, 2017-2024.

BACKGROUND: Alkyl nitrites, commonly known as "poppers," have been widely used as recreational inhalants since the 1970s, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). Despite regulatory restrictions in the United States, poppers remain available under misleading product labels (eg, nail polish removers). Limited epidemiologic research has focused on trends in prevalence and correlates of poppers use, particularly among populations that include non-MSM individuals. METHODS: We analyzed data from a repeated cross-sectional survey of adults entering electronic dance music events at nightc

Foodborne and Waterborne Disease in Canada-1984 Annual Summary.

Data on foodborne disease in Canada in 1984 are compared with those for 1983. A total of 1,181 incidents, comprising 1,016 outbreaks and 165 single cases, caused illnesses in 9,953 persons in 1984. These figures are the highest on record with almost double the number of cases occurring in 1983. Salmonella , Staphylococcus aureus , Clostridium perfringens , and Bacillus cereus were responsible for most of the illnesses. The main Salmonella serovars involved were S. typhimurium , S. enteritidis , and S. heidelberg . There were no incidents of parasitic infections or paralytic shellfish poisoning

Prevalence of Intestinal Parasite Infections and Their Associated Factors among Food Handlers Working in Selected Catering Establishments from Bule Hora, Ethiopia.

Intestinal parasites are responsible for one of the major health problems like food contamination with socioeconomic effects in the world with a prevalence rate of 30-60%, in developing countries that lie within tropical and subtropical areas. They pose a reasonable public health burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. Globally, due to intestinal parasitic infections, around 3.5 billion people are affected and more than 200,000 deaths are reported annually. Around 50000 deaths yearly are caused by intestinal parasites in Ethiopia. As such, intestinal paras

What happens if people start drinking mouthwash as surrogate alcohol? A quantitative risk assessment.

Mouthwash ingestion has been observed in settings of restricted availability to alcoholic beverages such as in hospitals, prisons or military establishments. The literature offers limited evidence that ingredients of mouthwash may have health effects above the effects of ethanol. This study provides a quantitative risk assessment based on analysis of 30 mouthwash samples. All investigated brands contained alcohol, most of them menthol (93%), eucalyptol (90%), benzoic acid (87%), methyl salicylate (67%), and thymol (30%). For low risk drinking scenarios with average levels, only ethanol will ex

The intersecting risks of substance use and HIV risk among substance-using South African men and women.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to review the recent literature examining the intersection between alcohol and other drug use and HIV risk behaviors for South African men and women, and the implications for the development of interventions and future research. RECENT FINDINGS: The current literature indicates that substance use in sexual contexts (i.e. before or during sex) as well as outside of the sexual context is associated with HIV risk behaviors, such as having unprotected sex and multiple sex partners. Additionally, environments where substances are used, such as drinking

Is Dietary Iodine Intake Excessive According to the Theoretical Model of Healthy Dietary Intake Pattern in Pregnant Women and Schoolchildren: Water, Salt, or Food?

Introduction: Iodine deficiency during pregnancy can cause hypothyroidism and goiter; in schoolchildren, it can cause reduced intelligence quotient. In excess, iodine can cause thyroiditis, goiter, and Hashimoto's hypothyroidism. Currently, schoolchildren and pregnant women are classified as risk groups for excessive iodine intake and iodine deficiency, respectively. Thus, determining iodine from all sources of consumption is important for intervention planning. Objective: To construct a theoretical model for the iodine intake of schoolchildren and pregnant women of a city in the Zona da Mata

Contextualizing gender differences and methamphetamine use with HIV prevalence within a South African community.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted in a large Black African township outside of Cape Town, South Africa, where HIV infection has been endemic at extremely high levels for years. Problems associated with high HIV prevalence are compounded by gender inequality and high rates of gender-based violence exacerbated by heavy alcohol use and increasing methamphetamine use. METHODS: Informal drinking establishments (known as shebeens) were geocoded and mapped. Based on visual examination, we identified 36 neighbourhoods, each of which contained between three to seven drinking venues clustered togeth

Factors Affecting Access to and Utilisation of HIV/AIDS Preventive Services Among Young Single Mothers Working in Alcohol Serving Establishments in Rwanda: An Exploratory Qualitative Study.

Despite Rwanda's progress in HIV prevention for key populations, female employees in alcohol-serving establishments (ASEs) remain underserved, with interventions often lacking attention to the contextual factors shaping their HIV risk and service uptake. Guided by the Exploration phase of the Exploration, Preparation, Intervention, and Sustainment (EPIS) framework, a qualitative study was conducted to identify contextual factors affecting HIV prevention uptake among young single mothers working in informal ASEs. In-depth interviews were conducted with 101 participants recruited through maximum
