Dynamic disparities in inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes into estuarine systems under different flow regimes and streamflow droughts.

Elongated periods of low flow conditions, which can be termed as streamflow droughts, influence the nutrient (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus) balance in estuarine systems. Analyzing temporal trends of nutrient fluxes into such systems under different streamflow regimes can complement the understanding about the dynamic evolution of streamflow droughts and their impacts on nutrient levels. The objective of this paper was to evaluate how dynamic evolution of streamflow droughts (from low flow conditions) affects the inorganic nutrient flux in a tropical estuarine system. We analyzed a 20-year tim

Proteomic Responses of the Springtail Folsomia candida to Drought.

Springtails are adapted to life in the pore space of soil, where humidity in moist soil is close to saturation. Drought is the most important limiting factor for springtails; however, their molecular and physiological adaptations to low humidity are not well understood. The present study explored the global proteomic drought response of the springtail, Folsomia candida (Isotomidae, Collembola). In relatively dry soil (-360 kPa), adult springtails initially lost body water but re-established the normal body water content over the following two weeks. Nano LC-MS/MS analysis identified a total of

The drug drought in maternal health: an ongoing predicament.

We developed a comprehensive database of medicines that are used or are being investigated for pre-eclampsia or eclampsia, preterm birth or labour, postpartum haemorrhage, intrauterine growth restriction, and fetal distress and that were in active development between 2000 and 2021. A total of 444 candidates were identified: approximately half of candidates were in active development, two-thirds had been repurposed after initially being used for another condition, and just under half were in preclinical studies. Only 64 candidates were in active late-stage (phase 3) development as of Oct 25, 20

Therapeutic pipeline for atopic dermatitis: End of the drought?

Until the past year, our therapeutic armamentarium for treating atopic dermatitis (AD) was still primarily topical corticosteroids and, for more severe disease, systemic immunosuppressants. The pipeline of more targeted topical and systemic therapies is expanding based on our growing understanding of the mechanism for AD and is particularly focused on suppressing the skewed immune activation. Most agents are in phase 2 clinical trials. Crisaborole, a topical phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor, became available in late 2016 in the United States for mild-to-moderate AD, with other PDE4 inhibit

Chlororespiration and tolerance to drought, heat and high illumination.

Sun (Chrysanthemum morifolium) and shade (Spathiphyllum wallisii) plants were used to study the effects of drought, heat and high illumination. The stress conditions caused a greater accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in Chrysanthemum morifolium than in Spathiphyllum wallisii leaves. They also resulted in down-regulation of linear electron transport in the leaves of both species, as indicated by a gradual reduction in the photochemistry efficiency of PS II, which was associated with an increase in the non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence. Only a slight decrease in F(v)/F(m) was observed

Metabolic and Gene Expression Profile Reveal Genetic Basis of Reproductive Stage Drought Tolerance in a Drought-Defying Rice Mutant.

Mutation breeding provides a powerful route to generate novel genetic variation and to uncover genes underlying stress tolerance. Identifying mechanisms that sustain rice productivity under water-limited conditions is a central challenge in plant biology. We developed a gamma-ray-mutagenised population of Oryza sativa L. cv. IR64 and systematically screened the M2, M3 and M4 generations for drought tolerance at the seedling, pre-flowering and post-flowering stages. Through this multi-stage, multi-generational, and multi-environment phenotypic selection, we identified a drought-defying (DD) mut

Drought-tolerant Pseudomonas sp. showed differential expression of stress-responsive genes and induced drought tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The growth and persistence of rhizobacteria in soils are highly impacted by moisture stress. In this study, we report the first transcript analysis of four Pseudomonas strains (PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4) isolated from the root-soil interface of rice and maize associated with different moisture levels during water deprivation. Filtered Pseudomonas sp. cells incubated at low (RH10%) and high (RH85%) relative humidity showed decreased survival of all Pseudomonas sp. at RH10% when compared with RH85%. RT-PCR showed differential expression of treS (trehalose synthase), rpoS (sigma factor), mucA (algin

Cross-scale assessments of the impacts and resilience of subtropical montane cloud forests to chronic seasonal droughts and episodic typhoons.

Montane cloud forests (MCFs) are ecosystems frequently immersed in fog and are vital for the terrestrial hydrological cycle and biodiversity hotspots. However, the potential impacts of climate change, particularly intensified droughts and typhoons, on the persistence of ecosystems remain unclear. Our study conducted cross-scale assessments using 6-year (2016-2021) ground litterfall and 21-year (2001-2021) satellite greenness data (the Enhanced Vegetation Index [EVI] and the EVI anomaly change [ΔEVI% ]), gross primary productivity anomaly change (ΔGPP% ), and meteorological variables (the stand

Plant photosynthetic responses to drought, rewatering, and flooding.

The review discusses how plants modulate photosynthesis under contrasting water regimes, highlighting stress-specific limitations, recovery dynamics, and physiological indicators to inform breeding and management under climate change. Climate change is intensifying rainfall extremes, including prolonged droughts, sudden rewatering, and extended flooding, threatening crop productivity worldwide. Here, we present an integrative review synthesizing how major crops modulate photosynthesis under these contrasting water regimes. Drought restricts stomatal and mesophyll conductance, downregulates RuB

Cytorrhysis under drought, osmotic and freezing stress.

Cytorrhysis describes the shrinkage of plant cells caused by water loss, during which the protoplast and cell wall contract while remaining connected. Cytorrhysis can occur naturally during drought and freezing and can be experimentally induced by exposure to osmotic substances. Although traditionally studied separately, the cytorrhysis process itself shares the same underlying mechanisms: water efflux along chemical potential gradients and the mechanical response of the cell wall-plasma membrane continuum. Cytorrhysis has been documented across diverse taxa - including algae, bryophytes, fern

Molecular and physiological mechanisms of drought tolerance in grapevine.

Drought stress severely limits grapevine productivity and compromises fruit quality, with its adverse effects expected to intensify under ongoing climate change. This review synthesizes recent advances in elucidating the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying drought tolerance in Vitis vinifera. Key physiological responses include abscisic acid (ABA)-mediated amplification of stomatal closure, osmotic adjustment, activation of antioxidant defense systems, and hydraulic vulnerability segmentation-a protective strategy involving the targeted sacrifice of petioles and basal leaves to m

The regulatory role of phytohormones in plant drought tolerance.

This paper highlights the role of various signaling hormones in drought stress tolerance. It explains how phytohormones act and interact under drought conditions. Drought stress significantly impairs plant growth, development and productivity. The likelihood of adverse impacts of drought will increase due to variations in global climate patterns. Phytohormones serve as key regulators of drought tolerance mechanisms in plants. The in-depth understanding of the role and signaling of such hormones is thus of great significance for plant stress management. In this review, we conducted a bibliometr

Exposure to teflubenzuron reduces drought tolerance of collembolans.

Chitin synthesis inhibitors (CSIs) are commonly used insecticides compromising cuticle formation and structure in arthropods. Arthropods rely on intact cuticles to maintain water balance and cellular homeostasis to survive in different weather conditions. We hypothesized that physiological impacts of CSIs may make arthropods more vulnerable to harsh environmental conditions, such as extreme heat, cold or drought. The aim of this study was to investigate if pre-exposure to teflubenzuron (a common CSI) would influence Folsomia candida's (Collembola: Isotomidae) sensitivity to natural stressors.

The adverse health effects associated with drought in Africa.

Droughts are associated with several health effects and Africa is uniquely vulnerable. Despite this, there has been no previous review of the literature on the health effects of drought in Africa. This study systematically reviewed the epidemiological research on the association between drought and adverse health effects in Africa (2012-2019). A total of fifteen articles were included in the review after screening 1922 published (peer-reviewed) and unpublished articles. These studies were all conducted in 9 Sub-Saharan African countries. The drought-related health effects identified were on ad

Worster-Drought Syndrome Associated With LINS Mutations.

Worster-Drought syndrome is a congenital, pseudobulbar paresis. There is no identified molecular etiology despite familial cases reported. The authors report a boy who was diagnosed with Worster-Drought syndrome due to longstanding drooling, dysphagia, and impaired tongue movement. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was unrevealing. At 14 years old, he remains aphonic with normal facial and extraocular movements. Nonsense mutations in the LINS gene, p.Glu366X and p.Lys393X, were found. Results from neuropsychological testing at 14 years old were consistent with a diagnosis of intellectual

Health effects of drought: a systematic review of the evidence.

Introduction. Climate change projections indicate that droughts will become more intense in the 21 century in some areas of the world. The El Niño Southern Oscillation is associated with drought in some countries, and forecasts can provide advance warning of the increased risk of adverse climate conditions. The most recent available data from EMDAT estimates that over 50 million people globally were affected by drought in 2011. Documentation of the health effects of drought is difficult, given the complexity in assigning a beginning/end and because effects tend to accumulate over time. Most he

Adaptive photosynthetic in drought-resistant and susceptible Jerusalem artichoke genotypes under elevated CO₂ and light intensity during drought stress.

BACKGROUND: Under elevated (relative to ambient) light intensity and CO₂ levels combined with drought affect photosynthesis, with responses may be varying between genotypes depending on their drought resistance. Thus, this study aimed to determine the difference of light intensity and CO2 concentration on the photosynthetic traits of Jerusalem artichoke genotypes differing in drought resistance under drought conditions. RESULTS: The rising CO₂ concentrations enhanced photosynthetic rate (Pn) and transpiration efficiency (TE), but decreased stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E) i
