Duodenal ulcer is a common disease and is considered acid-peptic disease. Duodenal ulcer patients are known to have higher incidence of antral gastritis and duodentitis than general population. Thus one can expect some alteration in the enzyme products of mucosal cells of antrum and duodenum in this condition. The present study was planned in 30 patients of duodenal ulcer and 30 of non-ulcer dyspepsia. Anxiety and depression levels in 25 duodenal ulcer patients were compared with equal numbers of age and sex matched normal controls, hospitalised patients with nonpsychosomatic medical illnesses and inpatients with neurosis. Sinha's anxiety scale and Hamilton's rating scale for depression were used to measure the levels of anxiety and depression respectively. Patients with duodenal ulcer were significantly more anxious and depressed as compared to normal subjects and patients with medical illnesses. Liver penetration is a rare complication of peptic ulcer disease. Histopathological examination of endoscopic biopsy is essential for diagnosis as well as sonographic and computerized tomography imaging. Endoscopic examination could not exclude tumor without pathologic examination. Herein, we report a patient diagnosed as duodenal ulcer penetration into liver by endoscopic biopsy.

The medical and endoscopic treatment of duodenal ulcer are decreasing the frequency of surgical treatment in this disease. The authors study the operations performed for duodenal ulcer within the period 1989-1999 in the County Hospital Baia Mare. The decrease of the rate of surgical interventions is the pure effect of the medical treatment, as long as the endoscopic treatment is not yet available in our service. Of 333 duodenal ulcer (DU) patients 75 (22.5%) were aged 65-93 years (study group). Ninety-two percent (306 patients) of the entire group were diagnosed endoscopically, and all were followed prospectively.
