Clinical presentation and outcome in cats with aural squamous cell carcinoma: a review of 25 cases (2010-2021).

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Ear canal neoplasia is uncommon in cats. Ceruminous gland adenocarcinoma is the most frequently reported malignant neoplasm of the feline ear canal, and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignant neoplasm diagnosed in the feline middle ear. However, limited information exists on the outcome of cats diagnosed with SCC of the ear canal, middle or inner ear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe the outcome of cats diagnosed with SCC affecting these locations. Medical records were reviewed at multiple institutions to identify cats with a defin

Adenomatous Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Middle Ear in a Young Man With Conductive Hearing Loss.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the ear pose a diagnostic challenge because clinical symptoms are no specific. Definite diagnosis is made by histopathological analysis with immunohystochemical evalutation. Therapy consists in a complete surgical resection. Controversial terminology of the neoplasm arises from the differentiation of these tumors composed of both endocrine and exocrine glands. Middle ear localization is an extremely rare presentation but less aggressive than gastrointestinal tract or lung localizations which are the most frequent. Radio-diagnostic analyses are necessary follow-up fo

Middle Ear "Adenoma": a Neuroendocrine Tumor with Predominant L Cell Differentiation.

This morphological and immunohistochemical study demonstrates that tumors currently known as "middle ear adenomas" are truly well-differentiated epithelial neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) composed of cells comparable to normal intestinal L cells, and therefore, these tumors resemble hindgut NETs. These tumors show consistent expression of glucagon, pancreatic polypeptide, PYY, and the transcription factor SATB2, as well as generic neuroendocrine markers and keratins. The same L cell markers are expressed by cells within the normal middle ear epithelium. These markers define a valuable immunohisto

Anaplastic astrocytoma following radiation for a glomus jugular tumor.

Evaluation of radiation therapy for a given neoplasm includes consideration of possible treatment complications as well as potential benefit. A 43-year-old male with a glomus jugular tumor or the right middle ear had received 4480 rad to the right middle and inner ear and temporal bone. Eight years later, he developed an anaplastic astrocytoma of the right cerebellar hemisphere. At this time a third neoplasm, a left carotid body tumor, was demonstrated angiographically. Although radiation can be implicated in the genesis of the glial neoplasm, the presence of two neural crest derived tumors su

Endoscopic excision of a tympanic paraganglioma: Training the next generation of ear surgeons.

Tympanic paragangliomas are uncommon vascular tumors of neural crest origin. Classically these lesions have been surgically managed via a transcanal or transmastoid approach using binocular microscopy. We describe a case in which a tympanic paraganglioma was removed via a transcanal approach, using the endoscope exclusively. Endoscopic ear surgery enhances visualization, helping to ensure complete tumor removal, while reducing unnecessary dissection and its associated morbidity. For small middle ear neoplasms, a purely endoscopic approach is feasible, with excellent results. Resident education

[Differential diagnosis of benign middle ear tumors].

Adenomas of the middle ear are quite rare tumours of the ear and of recent recognition. Two cases of adenomatous neoplasms confined to the middle ear are presented. Usually these tumours are located on the promontorium or in the hypotympanon. The unique feature of the first described case is based on its origin in the epitympanic pouch of the tympanic membrane. The second case originated from the mucosa in the hypotympanon. The third case is a tumour-like lesion which was not distinguishable on clinical grounds from a jugulo-tympanic paraganglioma or a middle ear adenoma. The adenomas of the m

A case of syryngocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP) involving middle ear, presenting with otomastoiditis and cerebral abscess.

Syryngocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP) is an uncommon cutaneous adnexal neoplasm of apocrine gland origin. Until now, fewer than 200 cases have been reported in international literature, of which 12 cases involved the external ear. No cases of SCAP involving the middle ear have been reported. We describe a case of SCAP of external and middle ear, presenting with otomastoiditis and cerebral abscess; this aggressive behavior, never reported for a benign adenoma of the external or middle ear, could lead to a differential diagnosis with cholesteatoma or malignancies.

Diagnosis and management of middle ear osteomas: a case report and literature review.

Osteomas of the middle ear are exceedingly rare benign neoplasms. To date, 16 cases have been reported in the literature, the vast majority of which appear as middle ear masses in young males with a progressive conductive hearing loss. In most patients, the diagnosis is confirmed by computed tomography (CT) or at the time of surgical exploration. Although these lesions have been described as slow-growing, no long-term follow-up has been reported. We present the seventeenth case of a middle ear osteoma in a 33-year-old man who remains asymptomatic and without evidence of tumor growth after nine

Pathology of labyrinthine ossification.

Ossification of the inner ear is the result of multifactorial pathogeneses, such as infection or malignant infiltration, and otosclerosis. Ossification of the inner ear spaces is a well documented sequela of suppurative labyrinthitis. In this study of human temporal bones, sections from 14 patients (28 temporal bones) were studied. In addition to the osseous tissue within the inner ear, findings included neoplasms, otosclerosis, otitis media, trauma, and Fabry's disease. We have attempted to correlate these conditions and their influence on the formation of osseous tissue within the spaces of

Middle Ear Neuroendocrine Tumor Mimicking As Chronic Otitis Media.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) of the head and neck are a rare and diverse group of tumors. Here, we report a case of a 40-year-old man presenting with symptoms resembling chronic left otitis media, including left ear otorrhea, otalgia, and reduced hearing. Otoscopic examination revealed a whitish mass located behind the tympanic membrane. The patient underwent examination under anesthesia and left cortical mastoidectomy, and a histopathological examination of the middle ear biopsy indicated the presence of an epithelial tumor with neuroendocrine differentiation, suggestive of middle ear adeno

Objective: To summarize the clinical characteristics and therapeutic experiences of the middle ear teratoma in infants. Methods: Three cases of middle ear teratoma, from 2012-2015 in Beijing Friendship Hospital were analyzed. Results: The three cases all developed slowly and presented unilateral otorrhea and hearing loss. Otoscopy showed the granulation tissue in the external ear canal. Audiological changes varied according to the degree of severity. Imaging features showed the pocket-like occupancy lesions in the Eustachian tube area. The temporal bone CT showed mass with soft tissue density

Ceruminous gland carcinoma of the external auditory canal presenting as chronic otitis media.

OBJECTIVE: Ceruminous neoplasms of the external ear canal are rare. Classification, clinical behavior, and management of these tumours are controversial. We report a case of carcinoma originating from the ceruminous glands of the external ear canal (EAC), operated based on a diagnosis of chronic otitis media with polyp. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old man presented with left ear discharge and hearing loss. Clinical examination showed a well-circumscribed polypoid mass limited to the EAC. There was no history of bloody ear discharge or radiological findings of bony erosion suggestive of malignancy.

Endolymphatic Sac Tumor in Two Dogs.

Endolymphatic sac tumors (ELSTs) are rare neoplasms of the inner and middle ear described in humans. Diagnosis of such neoplasms is difficult and largely dependent on a combination of histologic, immunohistochemical, and clinical findings. Although the neoplastic cells lack cellular features of malignancy, these are clinically aggressive tumors that often invade the surrounding temporal bone. Here, we describe 2 dogs with middle ear masses that share morphologic, immunohistochemical, and clinical similarities with human ELSTs. Advanced imaging of the masses revealed evidence of aggressive beha

Middle ear adenomatous neuroendocrine tumors: a 25-year experience at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Neuroendocrine tumors are extremely rare in the middle ear. We reviewed our institutional experience with middle ear adenomatous neuroendocrine tumors (MEANTs). We searched our institution's pathology files to identify patients treated from 1990 to 2015 who had lesions classified as middle ear adenomas, adenomatous tumors, adenomatous tumors with neuroendocrine differentiation, carcinoid tumors of the middle ear, low-grade neuroendocrine tumors of the middle ear, and neuroendocrine carcinomas of the middle ear and identified 14 such patients for whom follow-up information was available. Malignant lymphoma with middle ear involvement in a Sprague-Dawley rat.

Sprague-Dawley rats are amongst the most widely used animals in biomedical research and malignant lymphoma has long been known to be a frequent neoplasm in these animals. A 9-month-old male control Sprague-Dawley rat from a toxicity study showed gelatinous material in the cranial cavity and dark, thickened cerebral meninges at necropsy. At microscopic evaluation of the temporal bone, neoplastic lymphocytes were seen invading several structures of the middle ear. The neoplastic cells appeared to extend from the marrow of the temporal bone, covered the dorsal part of the tympanic cavity wall, an

Predominant catecholaminergic differentiation in tympanic paragangliomas: report of three consecutive cases.

Middle ear paragangliomas (ME-PGLs) are rare non-epithelial neuroendocrine neoplasms and the most common neoplasms of the middle ear. Tympanic paragangliomas (Ty-PGLs), a subset of ME-PGLs, are often biochemically non-functional, although prior studies have reported expression of cholinergic and, less frequently, catecholaminergic markers. The expression of functional biomarkers and somatostatin receptor type 2 A (SSTR2A) remains poorly defined in Ty-PGLs. We analyzed three surgically resected Ty-PGLs from adult patients without hyperadrenergic symptoms using immunohistochemistry. All tumors e

[A rare pathology of the petrous part of the temporal bone: adenoma of the middle ear].

Adenomas are very rare tumors of the middle ear. They are benign neoplasms originating from the glandular components of the mucous membrane of the middle ear. The middle ear adenoma was first described by Hyams and Michaels in 1976, which was named an adenomatous tumor. This article reports the case of a 50-year-old female patient, who presented with recurrent right-sided dull otalgia and pulse synchronous tinnitis, which began 1 year prior to presentation, with the suspected diagnosis of a glomus tympanicum tumor. Following the otorhinolaryngological examination and imaging an unclear mesotym

Middle-ear adenoma (MEA): a report of two cases, one with predominant "plasmacytoid' features.

Middle-ear adenomas (MEAs) are rare neoplasms which can display several histological patterns and represent a diagnostic challenge. We present two cases of MEA which share some histopathological features such as medium to small cells forming solid infiltrating tumour nests as well as scattered glandular structures with Alcian blue and PAS positive material within. The second case also displayed a distinct and predominant "plasmacytoid' appearance which, in a small biopsy, might have been misleading. Both cases expressed an admixture of epithelial and neuroendocrine immunohistochemical markers,

Lymphoma of the Internal Auditory Canal Presenting as Facial Palsy, Vertigo, and Hearing Loss.

The combined symptoms of vertigo, hearing loss, and facial palsy indicate the presence of lesions in the internal auditory canal (IAC). Differential diagnoses, such as inner/middle ear infections and IAC neoplasms, can make the definitive diagnosis of IAC lymphomas challenging. Lymphomas can infiltrate the central nervous system at various sites; however, IAC involvement in metastatic lymphomas is very rare. Herein we report the case of a patient with IAC lymphoma presenting with aural fullness of the left ear and intractable otalgia followed by symptoms of facial weakness, hearing loss, and v

Transient facial palsy in two cases of benign, very rare middle ear tumors (carcinoid tumor and myxoma).

OBJECTIVE: Presentation of the clinical features of 2 very rare middle ear tumors in which the guiding symptom was facial palsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Illustrative case reports about a myxoma and a carcinoid tumor of the middle ear associated with peripheral facial palsy. RESULTS: The facial palsy was transient in either case, and its pathomechanism is open for discussion. In both cases, the initial symptoms were typical for an inflammatory process. Moreover, both tumor entities are typically found in organs other than the ear; if located in the middle ear, those neoplasms grow rather superf
