A single-ossicle ear: Acoustic response and mechanical properties measured in duck.

To date, the single-ossicle avian middle ear (ME) is poorly understood, despite its striking resemblance to the design of many currently used ossicular replacement prostheses. This study aims to improve comprehension of this system. The acoustic response and the mechanical properties of the mallard middle ear were studied by means of optical interferometry experiments and finite element (FE) simulations. A finite element model was constructed based on μCT data and validated using the experimental results. Stroboscopic holography was used to measure the full-field displacement of the tympanic m

Middle Ear Osteoma With Assimilation of Ossicles: An Unusual Case of Conductive Hearing Loss.

We present a case report of a middle ear osteoma presenting as gradual unilateral conductive hearing loss in a healthy 32-year-old lady. The decision for treatment was influenced by the relatively small burden of the disease, and the size and location of the osteoma, which made the decision for surgical excision prohibitively difficult. Taking patient wishes and circumstances into account, the decision was made for a bone conduction hearing implant in conjunction with close follow-up.

Traumatic dislocation of middle ear ossicles: A new computed tomography classification predicting hearing outcome.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of radiologic measurements and find out whether hearing outcome could be predicted based on computer tomography (CT) scan evaluation in patients with temporal bone fractures and suspected ossicular joint dislocation. METHODS: We assessed 4002 temporal bone CT scans and identified 34 patients with reported ossicular joint dislocation due to trauma. We excluded those with no proven traumatic ossicular dislocation in CT scan and patients with bilateral temporal bone fractures. We measured four parameters such as malleus-incus axis distance, malleus-incus ang

[Is reuse of autologous ear ossicles in cholesteatoma or chronic suppurative otitis media justified?].

From the 1950s onwards ossicular bone autografts have been used to restore the middle ear sound conduction mechanism. Controversy still exists regarding the appropriateness of autologous ossicular bone grafts in chronic middle ear diseases. This communication is based on a study of 149 ossicles surgically removed from 120 patients with different ear diseases, at the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of the University of Wuerzburg. It is the object of this study to systematically investigate the histological findings in the ossicles in cholesteatoma and chronic suppurative oti

Hush puppy: a new mouse mutant with pinna, ossicle, and inner ear defects.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Deafness can be associated with abnormalities of the pinna, ossicles, and cochlea. The authors studied a newly generated mouse mutant with pinna defects and asked whether these defects are associated with peripheral auditory or facial skeletal abnormalities, or both. Furthermore, the authors investigated where the mutation responsible for these defects was located in the mouse genome. METHODS: The hearing of hush puppy mutants was assessed by Preyer reflex and electrophysiological measurement. The morphological features of their middle and inner ears were investigated b

The effect of single-ossicle ear flexibility and eardrum cone orientation on quasi-static behavior of the chicken middle ear.

In the single-ossicle ear of chickens, the quasi-static displacement of the umbo shows great asymmetry; umbo displacements are much larger for negative than for positive pressure in the middle ear, which is opposite to the typical asymmetry observed in mammal ears. To better understand this behavior, a finite-element model was created of the static response of the chicken middle ear. The role of flexibility of the extracolumella in the model was investigated, and the potential effect of the outward orientation of the tympanic-membrane cone was studied by building two adapted models with a flat

A new developmental mechanism for the separation of the mammalian middle ear ossicles from the jaw.

Multiple mammalian lineages independently evolved a definitive mammalian middle ear (DMME) through breakdown of Meckel's cartilage (MC). However, the cellular and molecular drivers of this evolutionary transition remain unknown for most mammal groups. Here, we identify such drivers in the living marsupial opossum Monodelphis domestica, whose MC transformation during development anatomically mirrors the evolutionary transformation observed in fossils. Specifically, we link increases in cellular apoptosis and TGF-BR2 signalling to MC breakdown in opossums. We demonstrate that a simple change in

Dysmorphogenesis of the mandible, zygoma, and middle ear ossicles in hemifacial microsomia and mandibulofacial dysostosis.

A review of the anatomical changes in patients with various "first arch" syndromes shows that some anomalies (e.g., micrognathia, ear defects) generally appear together. This study tested the hypothesis that the mandible, zygomatic arch, and middle ear ossicles are a developmental field (i.e., when any of these structures is anomalous, the other two will be also). The hypothesis was tested using data from 25 patients with mandibulofacial dysostosis (MFD) and 40 patients with hemifacial microsomia (HFM). Analysis of the pooled data showed that the hypothesis of character association was general

Effect of bisphosphonate treatment on the oim mouse middle ear ossicles' structure, composition and hearing.

Hearing loss is common in people with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI or brittle bone disease). Bisphosphonates are widely used to treat long bone fragility in children with OI. However, its impact on the bone quality of the middle ear ossicles and hearing remains unknown. This study determines whether bisphosphonates treatment itself may contribute to hearing loss in OI by evaluating its effects in the oim/oim mouse model of severe OI having normal auditory function. Specifically, this study reports the effects of alendronate (ALN), a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate, on ossicle morphology, por

Uncovering the secreted signals and transcription factors regulating the development of mammalian middle ear ossicles.

The mammalian middle ear comprises a chain of ossicles, the malleus, incus, and stapes that act as an impedance matching device during the transmission of sound from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. These ossicles are derived from cranial neural crest cells that undergo endochondral ossification and subsequently differentiate into their final functional forms. Defects that occur during middle ear development can result in conductive hearing loss. In this review, we summarize studies describing the crucial roles played by signaling molecules such as sonic hedgehog, bone morphogenetic pro

Region-specific endodermal signals direct neural crest cells to form the three middle ear ossicles.

Defects in the middle ear ossicles - malleus, incus and stapes - can lead to conductive hearing loss. During development, neural crest cells (NCCs) migrate from the dorsal hindbrain to specific locations in pharyngeal arch (PA) 1 and 2, to form the malleus-incus and stapes, respectively. It is unclear how migratory NCCs reach their proper destination in the PA and initiate mesenchymal condensation to form specific ossicles. We show that secreted molecules sonic hedgehog (SHH) and bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) emanating from the pharyngeal endoderm are important in instructing region-spec

Visualization of Middle Ear Ossicles in Elder Subjects with Ultra-short Echo Time MR Imaging.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the visualization of middle ear ossicles by ultra-short echo time magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 3T in subjects over 50 years old. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty ears from 30 elder patients that underwent surgical or interventional treatment for neurovascular diseases were included (ages: 50-82, median age: 65; 10 men, 20 women). Patients received follow-up MR imaging including routine T1- and T2-weighted images, time-of-flight MR angiography, and ultra-short echo time imaging (PETRA, pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition). All patients underwent com

Comparative anatomy of the middle ear ossicles of extant hominids--Introducing a geometric morphometric protocol.

The presence of three interconnected auditory ossicles in the middle ear is a defining characteristic of mammals, and aspects of ossicle morphology are related to hearing sensitivity. However, analysis and comparison of ossicles are complicated by their minute size and complex three-dimensional shapes. Here we introduce a geometric morphometric measurement protocol for 3D shape analysis based on landmarks and semilandmarks obtained from μCT images and apply it to ossicles of extant hominids (great apes and humans). We show that the protocol is reliable and reproducible over a range of voxel re

Simultaneous 3D imaging of sound-induced motions of the tympanic membrane and middle ear ossicles.

Efficient transfer of sound by the middle ear ossicles is essential for hearing. Various pathologies can impede the transmission of sound and thereby cause conductive hearing loss. Differential diagnosis of ossicular disorders can be challenging since the ossicles are normally hidden behind the tympanic membrane (TM). Here we describe the use of a technique termed optical coherence tomography (OCT) vibrography to view the sound-induced motion of the TM and ossicles simultaneously. With this method, we were able to capture three-dimensional motion of the intact TM and ossicles of the chinchilla

Development of an Assessment Model for the Effect of the Replacement of Minimal Artificial Ossicles on Hearing in the Inner Ear.

Due to ethical issues and the nature of the ear, it is difficult to directly perform experimental measurements on living body elements of the human ear. Therefore, a numerical model has been developed to effectively assess the effect of the replacement of artificial ossicles on hearing in the inner ear. A healthy volunteer's right ear was scanned to obtain CT data, which were digitalized through the use of a self-compiling program and coalescent Patran-Nastran software to establish a 3D numerical model of the whole ear, and a frequency response of a healthy human ear was analyzed. The vibratio
