Clinical Evidence for the Effectiveness of Herbal Medicines in the Treatment of an Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder: A Review Study.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a potentially debilitating disease that affects 1-4% of the general population. It is characterized by the presence of obsessions and compulsions which interfere with the individual's life and functioning. Although conventional treatments such as drug therapies and cognitive behavioral therapy exist for OCD, these treatments are not universally successful and can cause side effects, which has created a demand for alternative and complementary therapies. METHODS: In this review, we summarize randomized clinical trials on the effectiveness of h

Alkannins and shikonins: a new class of wound healing agents.

Alkannins and Shikonins (A/S) are chiral-pairs of naturally occurring isohexenylnaphthazarins. They are found in the external layer of the roots of at least a hundred and fifty species that belong mainly to the genera Alkanna, Lithospermum, Echium, Onosma and Arnebia of the Boraginaceae family. Their occurrence in Jatropha glandulifera, a member of the Euphorbiaceae, should be considered as an exception. Pharmaceutical formulations with wound healing properties based on A/S have been in the market for many years. Although their wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti

Enzymatic Synthesis of Lysophosphatidylcholine Containing γ-Linolenic and Stearidonic Acids in a Solvent-Free System.

Stearidonic acid (SDA) and γ-linolenic acid (GLA) are recognized for their anti-inflammatory and cardiometabolic benefits, yet their natural dietary sources remain scarce. This study aimed to develop and optimize the enzymatic synthesis of lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) enriched with GLA and SDA in a solvent-free system using Echium plantagineum seed oil as the source of GLA and SDA. Enzyme screening was conducted with three immobilized lipases, among which Lipozyme® 435 exhibited superior performance, achieving significantly higher proportions of both GLA and SDA into the LPC backbone compared

Functional characterization of LeWRKY24 targeting LeSAT2 to promote acylshikonin biosynthesis.

(R)-shikonin/(S)-alkannin and their derivatives (collectively denoted as shikonins) are abundantly distributed in Boraginaceae roots. Acetylshikonin, as a crucial derivative of (R)-shikonin, possesses substantial research significance. Previous investigations have shown that LeSAT2, specifically catalyzes the acylation of (R)-shikonin to yield various acylated (R)-shikonin derivatives, including acetylshikonin. Additionally, electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA) indicated that LeWRKY24 transcription factors may be involved in the transcriptional regulation of LeSAT2. For this study, the

Comparative Analysis of Shikonin and Alkannin Acyltransferases Reveals Their Functional Conservation in Boraginaceae.

Shikonin and its enantiomer, alkannin, are bioactive naphthoquinones produced in several plants of the family Boraginaceae. The structures of these acylated derivatives, which have various short-chain acyl moieties, differ among plant species. The acylation of shikonin and alkannin in Lithospermum erythrorhizon was previously reported to be catalyzed by two enantioselective BAHD acyltransferases, shikonin O-acyltransferase (LeSAT1) and alkannin O-acyltransferase (LeAAT1). However, the mechanisms by which various shikonin and alkannin derivatives are produced in Boraginaceae plants remain to be

Systematic review on the anxiolytic and hypnotic effects of flower extracts in in vivo pre-clinical studies published from 2010 to 2020.

Anxiety disorders are prevalent conditions in the world population, whose standard approaches include pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and combinations of these interventions. Different classes of psychopharmaceuticals are recommended as the first line of drugs to treat these disorders, which can have several adverse effects, treatment resistance, dependence, and drug-drug interactions making it necessary to search for new therapeutic agents. In particular, diazepam (DZP), a prototype drug from the group of benzodiazepines, has been commonly used and evaluated for its efficacy and safety in dif

Plant-based medicines for anxiety disorders, part 2: a review of clinical studies with supporting preclinical evidence.

Research in the area of herbal psychopharmacology has revealed a variety of promising medicines that may provide benefit in the treatment of general anxiety and specific anxiety disorders. However, a comprehensive review of plant-based anxiolytics has been absent to date. Thus, our aim was to provide a comprehensive narrative review of plant-based medicines that have clinical and/or preclinical evidence of anxiolytic activity. We present the article in two parts. In part one, we reviewed herbal medicines for which only preclinical investigations for anxiolytic activity have been performed. In
