Prenatal growth patterns of the upper jaw complex with implications for laryngeal echolocation in bats.

Craniofacial morphology is extremely diversified within bat phylogeny, however growth and development of the palate in bats remains unstudied. The formation of both midline and bilateral orofacial clefts in laryngeally echolocating bats, morphologically similar to the syndromic and non-syndromic cleft palate in humans, are not well understood. Developmental series of prenatal samples (n = 128) and adults (n = 10) of eight bat species (two pteropodids, four rhinolophoids, and two yangochiropterans), and two non-bat mammals (Mus musculus and Erinaceus amurensis), were CT-scanned and cranial bone

Microseconds-level coding of echo delay in the auditory brainstem of an FM-echolocating bat.

Echolocating big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) detect changes in ultrasonic echo delay with an acuity as sharp as 1 µs or less. How this perceptual feat is accomplished in the nervous system remains unresolved. Here, we examined the precision of latency registration (latency jitter) in neural population responses as a possible mechanism underlying the bat's hyperacuity. We recorded local field potentials in the cochlear nucleus and inferior colliculus of anesthetized big brown bats to sequences of sounds consisting of a simulated frequency-modulated broadcast followed, at various echo delays,

Looking ahead: echolocation and flight behaviors of two fruit bat species navigating a corridor.

Bats navigating clutter must steer around obstacles to avoid collision, while simultaneously planning future flight trajectories. In this study, we investigated active sensing strategies of two bat species negotiating turns under matched geometric constraints. We compare the Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus), a lingual echolocator that can actively direct its sonar beam axis using tongue driven mechanisms, and the short-tailed fruit bat (Carollia perspicillata), a laryngeal nasal echolocator whose head aim and nose leaf shape emission directionality. Bats flew through a felt lined, 'L

In-flight brainstem responses highlight the encoding of self-emitted echolocation calls in bats.

Echolocating bats rely on precise auditory processing to navigate and forage in complete darkness. A critical aspect of this behaviour is the neural encoding of self-generated vocalizations, which allows for accurate comparison with returning echoes. In this study, we introduce a non-invasive method for recording auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in awake, flying big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus). Using a custom 3D-printed harness that enables sustained in-place flight, we simultaneously recorded electroencephalographic and acoustic signals from freely vocalizing animals. Self-emitted echolo

Flexible echolocation behavior of trawling bats during approach of continuous or transient prey cues.

Trawling bats use echolocation not only to detect and classify acoustically continuous cues originated from insects at and above water surfaces, but also to detect small water-dwelling prey items breaking the water surface for a very short time, producing only transient cues to be perceived acoustically. Generally, bats need to adjust their echolocation behavior to the specific task on hand, and because of the diversity of prey cues they use in hunting, trawling bats should be highly flexible in their echolocation behavior. We studied the adaptations in the behavior of Noctilio leporinus when

Echolocation call intensity and directionality in flying short-tailed fruit bats, Carollia perspicillata (Phyllostomidae).

The directionality of bat echolocation calls defines the width of bats' sonar "view," while call intensity directly influences detection range since adequate sound energy must impinge upon objects to return audible echoes. Both are thus crucial parameters for understanding biosonar signal design. Phyllostomid bats have been classified as low intensity or "whispering bats," but recent data indicate that this designation may be inaccurate. Echolocation beam directionality in phyllostomids has only been measured through electrode brain-stimulation of restrained bats, presumably excluding active b

Change in echolocation signals with hearing loss in a false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens).

The echolocation signals of a false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) were collected during a wall thickness discrimination task and compared to clicks recorded during an identical experiment in 1992. During the sixteen year time period, the subject demonstrated a loss of high frequency hearing of about 70 kHz. Clicks between the two experiments were compared to investigate the effect of hearing loss on echolocation signals. There was a significant reduction in the peak frequency, center frequency and source level of clicks between the two time periods. Additionally, the subject currently pr

Bats expand their vocal range by recruiting different laryngeal structures for echolocation and social communication.

Echolocating bats produce very diverse vocal signals for echolocation and social communication that span an impressive frequency range of 1 to 120 kHz or 7 octaves. This tremendous vocal range is unparalleled in mammalian sound production and thought to be produced by specialized laryngeal vocal membranes on top of vocal folds. However, their function in vocal production remains untested. By filming vocal membranes in excised bat larynges (Myotis daubentonii) in vitro with ultra-high-speed video (up to 250,000 fps) and using deep learning networks to extract their motion, we provide the first

Parallel thalamocortical pathways for echolocation and passive sound localization in a gleaning bat, Antrozous pallidus.

We present evidence for parallel auditory thalamocortical pathways that serve two different behaviors. The pallid bat listens for prey-generated noise (5-35 kHz) to localize prey, while reserving echolocation [downward frequency-modulated (FM) sweeps, 60-30 kHz] for obstacle avoidance. Its auditory cortex contains a tonotopic map representing frequencies from 6 to 70 kHz. The high-frequency (BF > 30 kHz) representation is dominated by FM sweep-selective neurons, whereas most neurons tuned to lower frequencies prefer noise. Retrograde tracer injections into these physiologically distinct cortic

Echolocating bats show species-specific variation in susceptibility to acoustic forward masking.

Echolocating bats rely on precise auditory temporal processing to detect echoes generated by calls that may be emitted at rates reaching 150-200 Hz. High call rates can introduce forward masking perceptual effects that interfere with echo detection; however, bats may have evolved specializations to prevent repetition suppression of auditory responses and facilitate detection of sounds separated by brief intervals. Recovery of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was assessed in two species that differ in the temporal characteristics of their echolocation behaviors: Eptesicus fuscus, which use

Molecular evolution of toothed whale genes reveals adaptations to echolocating in different environments.

BACKGROUND: Echolocation was a key development in toothed whale evolution, enabling their adaptation and diversification across various environments. Previous bioacoustic and morphological studies suggest that environmental pressures have influenced the evolution of echolocation in toothed whales. This hypothesis demands further investigation, especially regarding the molecular mechanisms involved in the adaptive radiation of toothed whales across multiple habitats. Here we show that the coding sequences of four hearing genes involved in echolocation (CDH23, prestin, TMC1, and CLDN14) have dif

Sonar gain control and echo detection thresholds in the echolocating bat, Eptesicus fuscus.

The echolocating bat, Eptesicus fuscus, detects sonar echoes with a sensitivity that changes according to the time elapsed between broadcasting of each sonar signal and reception of echoes. When tested in an electronic target simulator on a two-choice echo-detection task, the bat's threshold improved by 11.5 dB as echo delay changed from 2.3 to 4.6 ms (target ranges of 40 and 80 cm). Earlier experiments measured the change in detection threshold for delays from 1 to 6.4 ms (target ranges from about 17 to 110 cm) and obtained about 11 dB of improvement per doubling of delay. The new experiments

Vibroacoustic Response of the Tympanic Membrane to Hyoid-Borne Sound Generated during Echolocation in Bats.

The hyoid apparatus in laryngeally echolocating bats is unique as it forms a mechanical connection between the larynx and auditory bullae, which has been hypothesized to transfer the outgoing echolocation call to the middle ear during call emission. Previous finite element modeling (FEM) found that hyoid-borne sound can reach the bulla at an amplitude likely heard by echolocating bats; however, that study did not model how or if the signal could reach the inner ear (or cochlea). One route that sound could take is via stimulation of the eardrum-similarly to that of air-conducted sound. We used

Deep learning reveals persistent individual signatures in bat echolocation calls of the greater leaf-nosed bat.

Intraspecific variation is a prerequisite for natural selection and can manifest in various phenotypic traits, including vocal signals. However, classifying individuals based on their vocalizations, or acoustic individual identification (AIID), remains a significant challenge. This is particularly true for species that use rapidly varying echolocation calls for orientation. Here, we demonstrate that deep learning can overcome the limitations of traditional methods and reveal persistent individual signatures within bat echolocation calls. We recorded 17 584 echolocation calls from 34 individual

Comparative Genomics of the World's Smallest Mammals Reveals Links to Echolocation, Metabolism, and Body Size Plasticity.

Originating 30 million years ago, shrews (Soricidae) have diversified into around 400 species worldwide. Shrews display a wide array of adaptations, with some species having developed distinctive traits such as echolocation, underwater diving, and venomous saliva. Accordingly, these tiny insectivores are ideal to study the genomic mechanisms of evolution and adaptation. We conducted a comparative genomic analysis of four shrew species and 16 other mammals to identify genomic variations unique to shrews. Using two existing shrew genomes and two de novo assemblies for the maritime (Sorex maritim

Development of the hyolaryngeal architecture in horseshoe bats: insights into the evolution of the pulse generation for laryngeal echolocation.

BACKGROUND: The hyolaryngeal apparatus generates biosonar pulses in the laryngeally echolocating bats. The cartilage and muscles comprising the hyolarynx of laryngeally echolocating bats are morphologically modified compared to those of non-bat mammals, as represented by the hypertrophied intrinsic laryngeal muscle. Despite its crucial contribution to laryngeal echolocation, how the development of the hyolarynx in bats differs from that of other mammals is poorly documented. The genus Rhinolophus is one of the most sophisticated laryngeal echolocators, with the highest pulse frequency in bats.

Retinotopic-like maps of spatial sound in primary 'visual' cortex of blind human echolocators.

The functional specializations of cortical sensory areas were traditionally viewed as being tied to specific modalities. A radically different emerging view is that the brain is organized by task rather than sensory modality, but it has not yet been shown that this applies to primary sensory cortices. Here, we report such evidence by showing that primary 'visual' cortex can be adapted to map spatial locations of sound in blind humans who regularly perceive space through sound echoes. Specifically, we objectively quantify the similarity between measured stimulus maps for sound eccentricity and

Echolocating free-tailed bats use vision and hearing but not magnetoreception when navigating a maze.

Insectivorous bats navigate mainly by echolocation, but may also use visual, olfactory, and magnetic cues when travelling long distances. Parsing the relative contributions of different senses for navigation is difficult in wild bats. In the lab, spatial navigation in rodents is often studied using different maze assays, including the widely employed multiple T-mazes. Here, we trained crawling Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) to navigate a multiple T-maze within an artificial magnetic field and then manipulated the sensory environment to quantify the relative importance of visi

Echolocating Bats Have Evolved Decreased Susceptibility to Noise-Induced Temporary Hearing Losses.

Glenis Long championed the application of quantitative psychophysical methods to understand comparative hearing abilities across species. She contributed the first psychophysical studies of absolute and masked hearing sensitivities in an auditory specialist, the echolocating horseshoe bat. Her data demonstrated that this bat has hyperacute frequency discrimination in the 83-kHz range of its echolocation broadcast. This specialization facilitates the bat's use of Doppler shift compensation to separate echoes of fluttering insects from concurrent echoes of non-moving objects. In this review, we

Resistance to age-related hearing loss in the echolocating big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus).

Hearing mediates many behaviours critical for survival in echolocating bats, including foraging and navigation. Although most mammals are susceptible to progressive age-related hearing loss, the evolution of biosonar, which requires the ability to hear low-intensity echoes from outgoing sonar signals, may have selected against the development of hearing deficits in bats. Many echolocating bats exhibit exceptional longevity and rely on acoustic behaviours for survival to old age; however, relatively little is known about the ageing bat auditory system. In this study, we used DNA methylation to
