What makes a fang? Phylogenetic and ecological controls on tooth evolution in rear-fanged snakes.

BACKGROUND: Fangs are a putative key innovation that revolutionized prey capture and feeding in snakes, and - along with their associated venom phenotypes - have made snakes perhaps the most medically-significant vertebrate animals. Three snake clades are known for their forward-positioned fangs, and these clades (Elapidae, Viperidae, and Atractaspidinae) contain the majority of snakes that are traditionally considered venomous. However, many other snakes are "rear-fanged": they possess potentially venom-delivering teeth situated at the rear end of the upper jaw. Quantification of fang phenoty

Microplastics released from disposable medical devices and their toxic responses in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Owing to accelerated urbanization and industrialization, many plastic products have been manufactured and discharged into the environment, causing environmental and public health problems. Plastics in environmental media are further degraded by prolonged exposure to light, heat, mechanical friction, and other factors to form new pollutants called microplastics (MPs). Medical plastics have become a crucial source of plastics in environmental media. However, the release profiles of MPs from medical plastics and their potential ecological and health risks remain unclear. We used optical photother

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato spirochetes in wild birds in northwestern California: associations with ecological factors, bird behavior and tick infestation.

Although Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) are found in a great diversity of vertebrates, most studies in North America have focused on the role of mammals as spirochete reservoir hosts. We investigated the roles of birds as hosts for subadult Ixodes pacificus ticks and potential reservoirs of the Lyme disease spirochete B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.) in northwestern California. Overall, 623 birds representing 53 species yielded 284 I. pacificus larvae and nymphs. We used generalized linear models and zero-inflated negative binomial models to determine associations of bird behaviors,

Preliminary evaluation of ferrous sulphate toxicity on larvae of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus: implications for ocean iron fertilization.

Ocean iron fertilization (OIF) has emerged as a potential marine carbon dioxide removal strategy, involving the addition of ferrous sulphate (FeSO₄) to iron-limited waters to stimulate phytoplankton blooms and enhance carbon sequestration. However, the ecotoxicological impacts on non-target organisms remain poorly characterised. We evaluated FeSO₄ toxicity using embryo-larval bioassays with the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, a standard model for marine ecotoxicology. FeSO₄ demonstrated an EC₅₀ of 60.81 μg/L (95% CI: 53.29-68.33 μg/L), compared to 17.90 μg/L for copper used as positive contr

Insights into the ecology and evolutionary success of crocodilians revealed through bite-force and tooth-pressure experimentation.

BACKGROUND: Crocodilians have dominated predatory niches at the water-land interface for over 85 million years. Like their ancestors, living species show substantial variation in their jaw proportions, dental form and body size. These differences are often assumed to reflect anatomical specialization related to feeding and niche occupation, but quantified data are scant. How these factors relate to biomechanical performance during feeding and their relevance to crocodilian evolutionary success are not known. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We measured adult bite forces and tooth pressures in

Supercritical Fluid Extraction to Valorise Fruit and Vegetable by-Products.

The global transition toward a circular bioeconomy requires the urgent valorization of agro-industrial by-products, specifically fruit and vegetable residues, which represent a significant environmental burden but also a rich source of high-value bioactive compounds. This review critically examines Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a highly efficient and versatile technological platform for the sustainable recovery of specialty lipids and secondary metabolites. By analysing the thermodynamic foundations of the supercritical state, the study explores how the tun

Proposal for a new definition of health: an anthropological reappraisal based on a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The definition of health proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948 ("a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity") remains influential but increasingly criticized for its idealistic, static, and potentially unattainable nature. Contemporary societies are confronted with aging populations, chronic diseases, environmental disruptions, psychosocial stress, and changing perceptions of normality and pathology. This study aimed to explore current perceptions of disease and health among French-speaking respond

What can ecological data tell us about reasons for divergence in health status between West Central Scotland and other regions of post-industrial Europe?

BACKGROUND: The link between the effects of de-industrialization (unemployment, poverty) and population health is well understood. Post-industrial decline has, therefore, been cited as an underlying cause of high mortality in Scotland's most de-industrialized region. However, previous research showed other comparably de-industrialized regions in Europe to have better and faster improving health (with, in many cases, a widening gap evident from the early to mid-1980s). OBJECTIVES: To explore whether ecological data can provide insights into reasons behind the poorer, and more slowly improving,

Exploring the Nutritional Ecology of Stunting: New Approaches to an Old Problem.

Despite a declining prevalence, stunting remains an elusive target for the global health community. The perception is that stunting represents chronic undernutrition (i.e., due to inadequate nutrient intake associated with food insecurity, low-quality diet, and suboptimal infant feeding practices in the first two years of life). However, other causes include maternal-fetal interactions leading to intrauterine growth retardation, poor maternal nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, and maternal and pediatric infections. Moreover, physical, economic, demographic, and social environments are m

Multilevel modelling of the incidence of visceral leishmaniasis in Teresina, Brazil.

Epidemics of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in major Brazilian cities are new phenomena since 1980. As determinants of transmission in urban settings probably operate at different geographic scales, and information is not available for each scale, a multilevel approach was used to examine the effect of canine infection and environmental and socio-economic factors on the spatial variability of incidence rates of VL in the city of Teresina. Details on an outbreak of greater than 1200 cases of VL in Teresina during 1993-1996 were available at two hierarchical levels: census tracts (socio-economic ch

A matrilineal genetic legacy from the last glacial maximum confers susceptibility to schizophrenia in Han Chinese.

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been widely reported in schizophrenia patients. To dissect the matrilineal structure of Han Chinese with or without schizophrenia and to decipher the maternal influence and evolutionary history of schizophrenia, a total of 1212 schizophrenia patients and 1005 matched healthy controls, all of Han Chinese origin, were recruited in Hunan Province, China. We classified haplogroup for each individual based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence variations and compared the haplogroup distribution pattern between cases and controls. Haplogroup B5a presented a higher frequ

Ecoepidemiological aspects of visceral leishmaniasis in an endemic area in the Steel Valley in Brazil: An ecological approach with spatial analysis.

Leishmaniases are a group of infectious diseases transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies, and their distribution depends on the presence of vectors, parasites, reservoirs and susceptible hosts in the same environment. In the last decades, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has become urbanized and reached economically important cities in countries within the transmission zone. Our study was conducted in one of those cities-Ipatinga-in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where the first autochthonous case of VL dates back to 2011. Since no data regarding the epidemiological triad of VL (etiological agen

Zoonoses As Ecological Entities: A Case Review of Plague.

As a zoonosis, Plague is also an ecological entity, a complex system of ecological interactions between the pathogen, the hosts, and the spatiotemporal variations of its ecosystems. Five reservoir system models have been proposed: (i) assemblages of small mammals with different levels of susceptibility and roles in the maintenance and amplification of the cycle; (ii) species-specific chronic infection models; (ii) flea vectors as the true reservoirs; (iii) Telluric Plague, and (iv) a metapopulation arrangement for species with a discrete spatial organization, following a source-sink dynamic of

Oral microbiome development during childhood: an ecological succession influenced by postnatal factors and associated with tooth decay.

Information on how the oral microbiome develops during early childhood and how external factors influence this ecological process is scarce. We used high-throughput sequencing to characterize bacterial composition in saliva samples collected at 3, 6, 12, 24 months and 7 years of age in 90 longitudinally followed children, for whom clinical, dietary and health data were collected. Bacterial composition patterns changed through time, starting with "early colonizers", including Streptococcus and Veillonella; other bacterial genera such as Neisseria settled after 1 or 2 years of age. Dental caries

[Seasonal transmission of malaria in the Senegal River Valley: case study of the city of Kaedi-Mauritanie].

INTRODUCTION: In the face of environmental and climatic changes both ongoing and planned, the epidemiology of malaria in the city of Kaedi (Mauritania), along the Senegal River Valley, requires special attention. Some cases of malaria have been registered in the health facilities throughout the year, with an average of 150,000 annual suspected cases and climatic and ecological conditions which are now favorable for seasonal transmission. METHODS: We conducted two cross-sectional descriptive surveys in the city of Kaedi in September 2014 (wet season) and in May 2015 (dry season). Our cluster s

The pervasive impact of global climate change on plant-nematode interaction continuum.

Pest profiles in today's global food production system are continually affected by climate change and extreme weather. Under varying climatic conditions, plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) cause substantial economic damage to a wide variety of agricultural and horticultural commodities. In parallel, their herbivory also accredit to diverse ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, allocation and turnover of plant biomass, shaping of vegetation community, and alteration of rhizospheric microorganism consortium by modifying the root exudation pattern. Thus PPNs, together with the vast majority

Phylogenetics, patterns of genetic variation and population dynamics of Trypanosoma terrestris support both coevolution and ecological host-fitting as processes driving trypanosome evolution.

BACKGROUND: A considerable amount of evidence has favored ecological host-fitting, rather than coevolution, as the main mechanism responsible for trypanosome divergence. Nevertheless, beyond the study of human pathogenic trypanosomes, the genetic basis of host specificity among trypanosomes isolated from forest-inhabiting hosts remains largely unknown. METHODS: To test possible scenarios on ecological host-fitting and coevolution, we combined a host capture recapture strategy with parasite genetic data and studied the genetic variation, population dynamics and phylogenetic relationships of Tr
