Socio-economic and psychosocial factors in the management and prevention of preterm labour.

Socio-economic factors associated with preterm labour include social class, (usually assessed by earnings and education), working conditions (professional status, ergonomic environment, working hours), physical and travelling activities, daily life activities, lifestyle, family status and psychosocial state as related to past and current pregnancy history together with current stress factors. A review of the association of these factors with preterm birth will be reported with an emphasis of the biological plausibility linking mostly emotional, and at a lesser degree, physical and psychologica

Lifestyle factors as mediators of area-level socio-economic differentials in cardiovascular disease risk factors. The Tromsø Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death and disability and living in areas with low socio-economic status (SES) is associated with increased risk of CVD. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, physical inactivity, an unhealthy diet and harmful alcohol use are main risk factors that contribute to other modifiable risk factors, such as hypertension, raised blood cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes. The potential impact of area-level socio-economic status (ASES) on metabolic CVD risk factors via lifestyle behaviors independent of individual SES has not been investigated

Patients aged 18 to 70 who survived for

Socio-economic factors affecting the distribution of marine litter: The Portuguese case study.

Marine litter is a growing global problem with serious environmental, economic, social, and health threats. Understanding the socio-economic factors that influence the types and amounts of litter is of utmost importance. In this study, an integrative analysis of the socio-economic factors that characterize the beach litter distribution in continental Portugal and the Azores archipelago was conducted via a cluster analysis, implementing a novel technique to support the difficult task of marine litter characterization. The results highlighted that the most abundant beach litter material is plast

Are socio-economic inequalities in breast cancer survival explained by peri-diagnostic factors?

BACKGROUND: Patients living in more deprived localities have lower cancer survival in England, but the role of individual health status at diagnosis and the utilisation of primary health care in explaining these differentials has not been widely considered. We set out to evaluate whether pre-existing individual health status at diagnosis and primary care consultation history (peri-diagnostic factors) could explain socio-economic differentials in survival amongst women diagnosed with breast cancer. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of women aged 15-99 years diagnosed in Englan

Socio-economic factors and family size as determinants of marital dissolution in Italy.

This is an analysis of marital dissolution in Italy, with a focus on the life events and socioeconomic factors that put individuals at high risk of a marital breakup. The author notes that Italian society still largely conforms to traditional conjugal models and attitudes toward cohabitation and divorce. "Women most exposed to the risk of marital disruption seem to be those who married very young, who have had no more than one child, who are better educated, who have full-time jobs and who reside in large towns in the north-west of Italy. In addition, a woman who cohabits with her partner befo

Protein-energy malnutrition in northern Sudan: prevalence, socio-economic factors and family background.

The socio-economic and family background and the nutrition of 145 children with kwashiorkor admitted to hospital in Khartoum over a 2-year period were compared with 113 marasmic kwashiorkor, 158 marasmic, and 186 nutritionally normal controls of similar age. Peak admissions for kwashiorkor were in the wet and post-wet season and the mean (SD) age was 1.6 (0.6) months. Mothers of malnourished children were more likely to be pregnant, and had poorer housing, sanitation and water supply, a lower income and food expenditure and less education than controls. Mothers of controls breastfed their chil

Network effects in influenza spread: The impact of mobility and socio-economic factors.

This paper introduces new methods of modeling and analyzing social networks that emerge in the context of disease spread. Four methods of constructing informative networks are presented, two of which use. static data and two use temporal data, namely individual citizen mobility observations taken over an extensive period of time. We show how the built networks can be analyzed, and how the numerical results can be interpreted, using network permutation-based surprise analysis. In doing so, we explain the relationship of surprise analysis with conventional network hypothesis testing and Quadrati

Toxoplasma gondii infection and toxoplasmosis in farm animals: Risk factors and economic impact.

The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Felids, including domestic cats, are definitive hosts that can shed oocysts with their feces. In addition to infections that occur by accidental oral uptake of food or water contaminated with oocysts, it is assumed that a large proportion of affected humans may have become infected by consuming meat or other animal products that contained infective parasitic stages of T. gondii. Since farm animals represent a direct source of infection for humans, but also a possible reservoir for th
