Vitamin D status of socio-economically deprived children in Kabul, Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Cultural, environmental, and diet-related factors were postulated to lead to a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Kabul's socioeconomically deprived children under 5 years of age. We investigated the prevalence of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) deficiency in such a group. METHODS: Children between 6 months and up to 5 years of age were randomly sampled in the Chindawal area of Kabul in January 2005. Plasma samples were frozen to below -20 degrees C and 25(OH)D3 concentrations estimated by high-pressure liquid chromatography. RESULTS: For all 107 children tested, the

The association of oral status with systemic health, quality of life, and economic productivity.

It is well established that many systemic adverse health conditions have manifestations in the oral cavity. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the available scientific evidence that describes the opposite effect, how adverse oral health conditions affect three aspects of daily living: 1) systemic health, 2) quality of life, and 3) economic productivity. Examples of oral health affecting systemic health include rheumatic fever patients who develop infective endocarditis from oral bacteria and organ transplant patients who develop severe complications from oral infections. Both systemic h

Genetic and environmental influences on internalizing psychopathology vary as a function of economic status.

BACKGROUND: Different theories of the link between socio-economic status (SES) and mental illness have been postulated. In particular, two theories of this association, social causation and social selection, differ in the implied causal pathway. The authors employ behavior genetic modeling to consider evidence for both social selection and social causation in the relationship between income variation and internalizing disorders. METHOD: Behavior genetic modeling was used to estimate the presence of gene-environment interaction (GxE, social causation) in the presence of gene-environment correl

Institutional delivery in rural India: the relative importance of accessibility and economic status.

BACKGROUND: Skilled attendance at delivery is an important indicator in monitoring progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5 to reduce the maternal mortality ratio by three quarters between 1990 and 2015. In addition to professional attention, it is important that mothers deliver their babies in an appropriate setting, where life saving equipment and hygienic conditions can also help reduce the risk of complications that may cause death or illness to mother and child. Over the past decade interest has grown in examining influences on care-seeking behavior and this study investigates the d

Healthy emotionality protects from the detrimental well-being consequences of low economic status.

Low economic status is linked to poorer mental and physical well-being, but individual differences in emotional and cognitive resources may buffer this relationship. Indeed, previous research has shown that people with low income but a high sense of control have comparable levels of life satisfaction and health to people with higher income. Building on this, we conducted two cross-sectional online studies with US participants to examine whether healthy emotionality-a predisposition to adaptive affective responses-buffers the negative effects of low economic status on well-being. In Study 1 (N

Geographic distribution and socio-economic determinants of women's nutritional status in Mali households.

OBJECTIVE: Mali is one of the poorest countries in Africa, with 72% of its population surviving on less than $US 1.00 per day. Health and demographic indicators are bleak. With few exceptions, studies related to the health of women in Mali have largely been under-represented. In addition, in recent years a new type of malnutrition stemming from weight gain and obesity has been observed throughout Africa. The present study aimed to (i) describe geographic and health variations of women of reproductive age, (ii) describe geographic variations of household salt iodine levels and (iii) investigate

Socio-economic status and hearing loss in chronic suppurative otitis media in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is reported in about 50% of cases of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). AIM: To report the prevalence, type and severity of hearing loss in CSOM and identify risk factors. METHODS: A prospective study of hearing loss in CSOM was undertaken in University College Hospital, Ibadan, two general hospitals and two primary health care centres, all in densely populated, semi-urban areas in south-west Nigeria. Controls were selected from school children, hospital workers' children and children whose parents were visiting the hospitals, all of whom claimed that there had

Child mortality in relation to HIV infection, nutritional status, and socio-economic background.

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to examine the impact of child HIV infection on mortality and to identify nutritional and sociodemographic factors that increase the risk of child mortality independent of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, among 687 children 6-60 months of age who were admitted to hospital with pneumonia. After discharge, children were followed up every 2 weeks during the first year and every 4 months thereafter. Sociodemographic characteristics were determined at baseline, and HIV status,

Socio-economic status and mental disorder--profile of a Nigerian psychiatric inpatient population.

A study of the socio-economic and diagnostic profile of psychiatric patients treated at a mental hospital in Nigeria over a period of six months was conducted. Schizophrenia, organic psychosis, and mental sub-normality were found to have been diagnosed more often among under privileged persons from lower socio-economic classes; while affective disorder (manic depression) and neurotic illness were commoner among persons from economically more fortunate higher social classes. Males exceeded females in the cohort and the patients generally exhibited upward social mobility when compared with their

Widowhood, Socio-Economic Status, Health and Wellbeing in Low and Middle-Income Countries.

Using data on women aged 50 and over from the WHO's Survey of Ageing and Adult Health for China, Ghana, India, the Russian Federation and South Africa (N=17,009), we assess associations between widowhood and socio-economic, health and quality of life deprivations. We find variations in the prevalence and timing of widowhood across the study countries, and associations between widowhood and being in the poorest wealth quintile for all five countries. For other deprivations, national experiences varied, with stronger and more consistent effects for India and China. These findings challenge gener

Do features of public open spaces vary according to neighbourhood socio-economic status?

This study examined the relations between neighbourhood socio-economic status and features of public open spaces (POS) hypothesised to influence children's physical activity. Data were from the first follow-up of the Children Living in Active Neighbourhoods (CLAN) Study, which involved 540 families of 5-6 and 10-12-year-old children in Melbourne, Australia. The Socio-Economic Index for Areas Index (SEIFA) of Relative Socio-economic Advantage/Disadvantage was used to assign a socioeconomic index score to each child's neighbourhood, based on postcode. Participant addresses were geocoded using a

Country economic status is strongly associated with burn survival - validation of the (modified) ABSI.

BACKGROUND: Predicting burn-related mortality is vital for family counseling, triage, and resource allocation. Several of the burn-specific mortality prediction scores have been developed, including the Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI) in 1982. However, these scores are not tested for accuracy to support contemporary estimates of the global burden of burn injury. This study compares burn mortality across countries with varying economic levels, as indicated by the Human Development Index (HDI), to assess if a modified ABSI (mABSI) offers enhanced predictive accuracy. METHODS: A retrospec

Impact of sex, socio-economic status, and remoteness on therapy and survival in heart failure.

AIMS: This study aims to determine if traditional markers of disadvantage [female sex, low socio-economic status (SES), and remoteness] are associated with lower prescription of evidence-based therapy and higher mortality among patients with moderate-severe heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. METHODS AND RESULTS: We recruited 452 consecutive class II-III heart failure with reduced ejection fraction patients. Baseline clinical data were recorded prospectively. The primary outcome was the association of female sex on overall survival. Secondary outcomes included association between ev

A Comparison of the Status, Legal, Economic, and Psychological Characteristics of Types of Adult Male Gamblers.

Gambling behavior is not a unique behavior. There are certain differences in behavior, gambling habits, gambling beliefs, and their reflection in psychosocial life. We have compared three groups of adult male gamblers—sports gamblers (n = 41), machine gamblers (n = 36), and poker gamblers (n = 35)—in regard to measures of personal status and legal-social characteristics. We found no difference between groups in terms of the length of gambling behavior, personal status, or age. We found no legal difference between groups in terms of the number of court cases for debt, stealing, or family court

Contribution of socio-economic status on the prevalence of cerebral palsy: a systematic search and review.

AIM: The association between socio-economic status (SES) and cerebral palsy (CP) remains controversial. Preterm birth, low birthweight, and postnatal injuries are accepted mediating risk factors for CP, but the question remains whether SES confers additional risk. The aim of this study was to analyse existing knowledge on the relationship between SES and the risk of CP. METHOD: We conducted a systematic search and review of potentially relevant research relating to SES and CP published from 1980 to 2012. Heterogeneity between studies did not allow for data aggregation or meta-analysis; theref

Marital status: association with social and economic circumstances, psychological state and outcomes of pregnancy.

We examined the association of marital status with economic, social and psychological factors and with the outcomes of pregnancy (defined as onset of labour, type of delivery, live and still births and birthweight). The study population was 1431 white women consecutively booking for antenatal care. Birth registrations were inspected. Of 278 women who were unmarried during pregnancy, 61 per cent were cohabiting, 26 per cent were living with adults other than the father and 13 per cent were living alone. Compared with the married women, unmarried women overall were, on average, younger, less edu
