Economic Preferences Predict COVID-19 Vaccination Intentions and Behavior.

This study investigates the relationship between economic preferences and COVID-19 vaccination readiness using two representative samples of the German population (N > 5000). We elicited altruism, patience, risk-taking and trust using validated survey questions. We find robust, positive relationships between vaccination readiness and both patience and trust. The positive association between altruism and vaccination readiness vanishes when controlling for the other preference dimensions. No consistent effect emerges for risk-taking. Our results underscore the importance of accounting for the in

A behavioral economic perspective on smoking persistence in serious mental illness.

Serious mental illness (SMI) is associated with disproportionately high rates of cigarette smoking. The identification of factors that contribute to persistent smoking in people with SMI may lead to the development and adoption of tobacco control policies and treatment approaches that help these smokers quit. This commentary examines factors underlying smoking persistence in people with SMI from the perspective of behavioral economics, a discipline that applies economic principles to understanding drug abuse and dependence. Studies, conducted in the Northeastern US within the past 30years, tha

A behavioral economic analysis of the effect of next-day responsibilities on drinking.

Approximately 37% of college students report heavy episodic drinking (5 or more drinks in an occasion for men and 4 or more for women) in the past month. This pattern of drinking is often associated with high blood alcohol levels, accidents, injuries, and negative social and academic outcomes. There is a need for novel theoretical approaches to guide prevention efforts. Behavioral economics emphasizes the role of contextual determinants, such as drink price and the presence and amount of alternative reinforcement as determinants of drinking levels and has received strong empirical support in b

Was the economic crisis of 2008 good for Icelanders? Impact on health behaviors.

This study uses the 2008 economic crisis in Iceland to identify the effects of a macroeconomic downturn on a range of health behaviors. We use longitudinal survey data that include pre- and post-reports from the same individuals on a range of health-compromising and health-promoting behaviors. We find that the crisis led to large and significant reductions in health-compromising behaviors (such as smoking, drinking alcohol or soft drinks, and eating sweets) and certain health-promoting behaviors (consumption of fruits and vegetables), but to increases in other health-promoting behaviors (consu

A targeted behavioral economics-based mobile health intervention to improve medication adherence in patients with hypertension: A three-arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-adherence to antihypertensive therapy remains a major barrier to optimal blood pressure (BP) control. This study evaluated whether a multi-faceted medication adherence mobile application (mApp), with or without financial incentives (FI), improves adherence and BP compared with standard care. METHODS: In this multicenter, randomized, open-label trial, outpatients with hypertension taking ≥4 pills/day were randomized to (A) mApp with FI, (B) mApp without FI, or (C) standard-of-care. Adherence was measured by Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS) dispensers. Primary endpoint

A Pilot Study of Youth With Type 1 Diabetes Initiating Use of a Hybrid Closed-Loop System While Receiving a Behavioral Economics Intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Many youth do not use the hybrid closed-loop system for type 1 diabetes effectively. This study evaluated the impact of financial incentives for diabetes-related tasks on use of the 670G hybrid closed-loop system and on glycemia. METHODS: At auto mode initiation and for 16 weeks thereafter, participants received a flat rate for wearing and calibrating the sensor ($1/day), administering at least 3 mealtime insulin boluses per day ($1/day), and uploading ($5/week). Weekly bonuses were given for maintaining at least 70% of the time in auto mode, which were increased for persistent aut

Xylazine does not enhance fentanyl reinforcement in rats: A behavioral economic analysis.

The adulteration of illicit fentanyl with the alpha-2 agonist xylazine has been designated an emerging public health threat. The clinical rationale for combining fentanyl with xylazine is currently unclear, and the inability to study fentanyl/xylazine interactions in humans warrants the need for preclinical research. We studied fentanyl and xylazine pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic interactions in male and female rats using drug self-administration behavioral economic methods. Fentanyl, but not xylazine, functioned as a reinforcer under both fixed-ratio and progressive-ratio drug self-admin

Lateral Orbitofrontal Inactivation Dissociates Devaluation-Sensitive Behavior and Economic Choice.

How do we choose between goods that have different subjective values, like apples and oranges? Neuroeconomics proposes that this is done by reducing complex goods to a single unitary value to allow comparison. This value is computed "on the fly" from the underlying model of the goods space, allowing decisions to meet current needs. This is termed "model-based" behavior to distinguish it from pre-determined, habitual, or "model-free" behavior. The lateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) supports model-based behavior in rats and primates, but whether the OFC is necessary for economic choice is less c

Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia: A Health Economic Evaluation.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Lost productivity caused by insomnia is a common and costly problem for employers. Although evidence for the efficacy of Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (iCBT-I) already exists, little is known about its economic effects. This study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit of providing iCBT-I to symptomatic employees from the employer's perspective. METHODS: School teachers (N = 128) with clinically significant insomnia symptoms and work-related rumination were randomized to guided iCBT-I or a waitlist-control-group, both with access

Family instability and the problem behaviors of children from economically disadvantaged families.

This longitudinal study examined the relation between family instability and the problem behaviors of children from economically disadvantaged families. Family instability was assessed when the children were ages 5 and 7 and included number of residence changes, changes of intimate caregiver relationships, and recent negative life events. The results showed direct concurrent relations between family instability and preschool children's externalizing behavior in the context of other family process variables, relations between subsequent family instability and 1st-grade children's internalizing

Economic disparities in parental hair cortisol are associated with externalizing behavior in children.

Socioeconomic disadvantage has been repeatedly found to increase risk for internalizing and externalizing problems in children. Socioeconomic disadvantage is theorized to exert these effects in part through its effects on parent and child stress physiology. Yet, these mechanistic pathways are not well understood. In this study, we examined the associations among socioeconomic factors, parental hair cortisol concentration (HCC) and emotional distress, and children's HCC and internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Participants were 106 typically developing 5- to 13-year-olds (57 % male; 74 % W

Latent factor structure of behavioral economic heroin and cocaine demand curves.

Research has shown that behavioral economic demand curve indices can be characterized by a two-factor latent structure and that these factors can predict dimensions of substance use. No study to date has examined the latent factor structure of heroin and cocaine demand curves. The objective of this study was to use exploratory factor analysis to examine the underlying factor structure of the facets of heroin and cocaine reinforcement derived from heroin and cocaine demand curves. Participants were 143 patients from two samples that met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,

A formative study to develop nudges informed by behavioral economics to increase engagement with tobacco treatment among people who smoke receiving care for HIV.

BACKGROUND: The rate of tobacco use among people with HIV (PWH) is > 2 fold higher vs. the general population and accounts for more life years lost than the virus. Yet, evidence-based tobacco treatments are uncommonly offered by clinicians or used by PWH. Biases informed by behavioral economics concerning tobacco treatments may drive this practice gap. METHODS: This formative study tested nudges in the form of messages that target four behavioral economic biases - status quo, availability, omission, and focusing effect - to determine which message would be most strongly associated with PWH wi

A randomized pilot trial of two forms of behavioral economics intervention to improve engagement in buprenorphine-naloxone treatment among patients with opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine-naloxone treatment engagement for those with opioid use disorder (OUD) is very low. The current randomized effectiveness trial piloted two psychosocial interventions developed to increase buprenorphine-naloxone treatment engagement in 44 individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) recruited from an OUD treatment clinic. A virtual pilot optimization trial for African American/Black and Latino persons with non-suppressed HIV viral load grounded in motivational interviewing and behavioral economics.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual and low-touch behavioral interventions are needed for African American/Black and Latino persons living with HIV (PLWH) with barriers to HIV viral suppression, particularly during COVID-19. Guided by the multiphase optimization strategy, we explored three components for PLWH without viral suppression, grounded in motivational interviewing and behavioral economics: (1) motivational interviewing counseling, (2) 21-weeks of automated text messages and quiz questions about HIV management, and (3) financial rewards for viral suppression (lottery prize vs. fixed compensation).

The role of IT and English education in shaping cognitive and behavioral responses to green economic volatility.

BACKGROUND: The transition to green economies requires individuals to interpret volatile sustainability-related information across digital platforms, international policy sources, and multilingual knowledge environments. OBJECTIVE: This study examined how IT competency and English-language education are associated with cognitive and behavioral responses to green economic volatility. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative survey data were collected from 420 academic and professional participants, followed by semi-structured interviews with 24 purposively

Maladaptive personality traits as predictors of prosocial and trusting behavior in two economic games.

BACKGROUND: Dimensional models of personality disorders postulate interpersonal dysfunction as the core feature of personality pathology, and describe maladaptive personality traits that characterize the specific pattern of dysfunction that is experienced. Herein, we examined whether maladaptive traits predict prosocial and trusting behavior, both of which are highly relevant behaviors for interpersonal functioning. Specifically, we examined antagonism as a predictor of prosocial behavior in a dictator game, and suspiciousness as a predictor of trust in the faith game. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Effects of NMDA receptor antagonists on behavioral economic indices of cocaine self-administration.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there are no FDA-approved medications for the treatment of psychostimulant (e.g., cocaine) use disorders. Because the GluN2B subunit of the glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor is an important mediator of addiction-like behaviors, the goal of the current study was to determine if the GluN2B-selective antagonist Ro 63-1908 is efficacious in attenuating cocaine self-administration. METHODS: Adult Sprague Dawley rats (24 males and 11 females) were implanted with indwelling catheters and were trained to self-administer cocaine (0.75 mg/kg/inf). Rats were then trai

Behavioral intervention grounded in motivational interviewing and behavioral economics shows promise with Black and English-speaking Latino persons living with HIV with unsuppressed HIV viral load in New York City: A mixed methods pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Sustained HIV viral suppression is the ultimate goal of HIV treatment. African American/Black and Latino persons with HIV (PWH) in the United States are less likely than their White peers to achieve and sustain viral suppression. To address these disparities, we developed a "low-touch" behavioral intervention drawing on motivational interviewing and behavioral economics. The intervention had three main components: (1) a motivational interviewing counseling session, (2) 16 weeks of automated text messages and quiz questions about HIV management, where participants earned points by
