Lipid metabolism in crocodilians: A field with promising applications in the field of ecotoxicology.

In the last years, lipid physiology has become an important research target for systems biology applied to the field of ecotoxicology. Lipids are not only essential components of biological membranes, but also participate in extra and intracellular signaling processes and as signal transducers and amplifiers of regulatory cascades. Particularly in sauropsids, lipids are the main source of energy for reproduction, growth, and embryonic development. In nature, organisms are exposed to different stressors, such as parasites, diseases and environmental contaminants, which interact with lipid signa

Current Status and Future Prognosis of Malaria Vector Control Pesticide Ecotoxicology and Xenopus sp.

Anurans from the genus Xenopus have long been used as standard testing organisms and occur naturally in tropical and sub-tropical areas where malaria vector control pesticides are actively used. However, literature on the toxic effects of these pesticides is limited. This review analyses the available data pertaining to both Xenopus and the pesticides used for malaria vector control in order to determine the pesticides that have the greatest potential to influence amphibian health while also identifying gaps in literature that need to be addressed. Amphibian diversity has shown the fastest dec

Advances in ecotoxicological research using planarians: a comprehensive review.

Planarians, distinguished by their extraordinary regenerative capacity and ecological role as benthic predators, have emerged as a transformative model in ecotoxicology. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of research on the effects of diverse classes of pollutants, including metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, nanomaterials, and a dedicated category of "other pollutants," namely biotoxins and physical stressors, on these organisms. We introduce a novel conceptual framework of "regenerative toxicology," which focuses on how contaminants impair an organism's

Ecotoxicological impact of deactivated asbestos-cement on soil ecosystems.

The effects of thermally deactivated asbestos cement (DAC) on the soil ecosystem were evaluated using the soil model organism Folsomia candida (Collembola). Two materials were obtained by treating asbestos cement slates, commonly used for roofing, at 1100 °C under oxidizing conditions (Red DAC) and at 1150 °C under reducing conditions (Green DAC). Ten age-synchronized juveniles of F. candida were exposed to DAC powder:soil mixtures in ratios of 1:1 and 1:10 for both types. After 28 days, adults and juveniles were counted to assess treatment effects. The results indicate distinct toxicity profi

A versatile Lepidium sativum bioassay for use in ecotoxicological studies.

This study presents a straightforward and efficient bioassay with garden cress (Lepidium sativum L.) for ecotoxicological analyses. Cress seedlings grow upright in hanging plastic bags on chromatography paper soaked with the test substance. Scans of the bags easily allow digital measurement of the length of the seedlings after the growth period. Suitability of this test system was examined by treating cress with different concentrations of several heavy metal compounds (cadmium nitrate, copper sulphate, iron sulphate, lead nitrate, manganese chloride, zinc chloride) and sodium chloride. Ecotoxicological evaluation of an aqueous phytoextract of Melia azedarach L.

Melia azedarach L. is a Meliaceae that has shown important insecticidal activities. However, few researchers have extensively studied the toxicology of aqueous extracts of M. azedarach (MAE). Therefore, the main objective of this study was to characterize the phyto-eco-toxicological profile of MAE. First, a botanical and phytochemical characterization of MAE was performed using a histological, and metabolomic multi-analytical approach. Second, the toxicological effects on pollinating insects (Apis mellifera ligustica) and soil collembola (Folsomia candida) were evaluated. In addition, acute to

Ecotoxicological assessment of perchlorate using in vitro and in vivo assays.

Perchlorate is an inorganic ion widespread in the environment, generated as a natural and anthropogenic pollutant, with known endocrine disruption properties in the thyroid gland. Nonetheless, there are few reports of its ecotoxicological impact on wildlife. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adverse effects of KClO4 exposure on different cell lines, HEK, N2a, and 3T3, as well as in ecological models such as Vibrio fischeri, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, Daphnia magna, and Eisenia fetida. Perchlorate exhibited similar toxicity against tested cell lines, with LC50 values of 19, 15, an

The challenge presented by progestins in ecotoxicological research: a critical review.

Around 20 progestins (also called gestagens, progestogens, or progestagens) are used today in assisting a range of medical conditions from endometrial cancer to uterine bleeding and as an important component of oral contraception. These progestins can bind to a wide range of receptors including progestin, estrogen, androgen, glucocorticoid, and mineralocorticoid receptor, as well as sex hormone and corticosteroid binding globulins. It appears that only five of these (four synthetic and one natural) progestins have so far been studied in sewage effluent and surface waters. Analysis has reported

Ecotoxicological properties of wastewater treated using tertiary methods.

The objective of this work was the examination of the efficiency of coagulation and ozonation processes for the production of reclaimed wastewater with low toxicity. Municipal secondary effluents were treated by FeCl3, Al2(SO4)3 (alum), and a commercial substance at metal ion concentrations of 0.5 and 1 mmol/L. Alternatively, the effluents were treated by ozonation in a semibatch ozone reactor. The feed gas was introduced at a flowrate of 3 L/min containing ozone at various concentrations, ranging between 2.5 and 8 mg/L; ozone residence times were 2, 5, 15, and 30 min. The toxic effects of the

[The effect of ecotoxicological processes on animal husbandry in industrial countries].

This paper describes results of ecotoxicological investigations concerning the effects of industrial pollutants on farm animals. By means of simultaneous experiments using dusts from lignite-filters and sedimentation-filters as well as sulfur dioxide (SO2) as stress models and by using studies on farm animals in pollutant-burden regions of eastern Germany it could be shown, that pollutants can lead to disorders of health, efficiency and behaviour, like o. g. heavy metals, and to contamination of food of animal origin. Dusts, resulting from combustion of lignite and SO2 initiate non specific ef

Beyond sea urchins: sea stars and brittle stars as welfare-friendly models in marine ecotoxicology.

The field of marine ecotoxicology is based on a limited range of model organisms that incompletely represent sea and ocean biodiversity and ecological function. Although echinoderms have been recognised as valuable test organisms, ecotoxicological research predominantly focuses on sea urchins, with comparatively limited attention given to other classes. This review synthesises ecotoxicological studies published over the past two decades on sea stars (Asteroidea) and brittle stars (Ophiuroidea) taking into consideration contaminants investigated, the biological endpoints applied and their suita

Ecotoxicology impact of silica-coated CdSe/ZnS quantum dots internalized in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii algal cells.

The use of quantum dots (QD) in various medical and industrial applications may cause these nanoparticles to leak into waterways and subsequently enter the food chain. Therefore, if we intend to use QD, we must first know their potential environmental implications. In this work, cadmium selenide/zinc sulfide core/shell QD were synthesized, and then, biocompatible, water-dispersed QD were coated with silica (Si-QD). The QD were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and UV-Vis a

Evolutionary concepts in ecotoxicology: tracing the genetic background of differential cadmium sensitivities in invertebrate lineages.

In many toxicological and ecotoxicological studies and experimental setups, the investigator is mainly interested in traditional parameters such as toxicity data and effects of toxicants on molecular, cellular or physiological functions of individuals, species or statistical populations. It is clear, however, that such approaches focus on the phenotype level of animal species, whilst the genetic and evolutionary background of reactions to environmental toxicants may remain untold. In ecotoxicological risk assessment, moreover, species sensitivities towards pollutants are often regarded as rand

Phytochemical Volatiles as Potential Bionematicides with Safer Ecotoxicological Properties.

The management of plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) still relies on traditional nematicides that threaten the environment and human health. Novel solutions are urgently needed for PPN pest management that are effective while safeguarding non-target organisms. Volatile phytochemicals belong to a structurally diverse group of bioactive metabolites that are believed to hold safer environmental characteristics than synthetic pesticides. Nonetheless, not many studies have analysed the potential environmental benefits of shifting to these novel bionematicides. In the present study, 20 phytochemical v

Towards unbiased interpretations of interactive effects in ecotoxicological studies.

Ecotoxicological research has increasingly focused on the interactive effects of chemical mixtures on biological models, emphasising additive, synergistic, or antagonistic interactions. However, these combination studies often test chemicals at unique concentrations (e.g. x:y), limiting our understanding of the effects across the full spectrum of possible combinations. Evidence from human toxicology suggests that interactive effects among chemicals can vary significantly with total concentration (e.g. x:y vs. 2x:2y), their ratio (e.g. x:2y vs. 2x:y), and the magnitude of the tested effect (e.g

Ecotoxicological effects of anthropogenic stressors in subterranean organisms: A review.

How anthropogenic stressors affect biodiversity is a central question in a changing world. Subterranean ecosystems and their biodiversity are particularly vulnerable to change, yet, these species are frequently neglected in analyses of global biodiversity and assessments of ecological status and risk. Are these hidden species affected by anthropogenic stressors? Do they survive outside of the current thermal limits of their ecosystems? These and other important questions can be addressed with ecotoxicological testing, relating contaminants and temperature resistance of species with measured en

Extraction and bioanalysis of the ecotoxicologically relevant fraction of contaminants in sediments.

Assessments of the risk connected to the contamination of soils and sediments should rely on a multidisciplinary approach based on both chemical and biological techniques (i.e., the sum of exposure and effects assessment). The dioxin-responsive, chemical-activated luciferase expression (DR-CALUX) bioassay is widely applied for evaluation of the toxicity of sediments after an exhaustive extraction of the contaminants, and results are used for risk assessment purposes. Approaches based on total extraction of contaminants do not take into account the importance of bioavailability and aging proces

A novel approach for the assessment of invertebrate behavior and its use in behavioral ecotoxicology.

Sublethal effects are becoming more relevant in ecotoxicological test methods due to their higher sensitivity compared to lethal endpoints and their preventive nature. Such a promising sublethal endpoint is the movement behavior of invertebrates which is associated with the direct maintenance of various ecosystem processes, hence being of special interest for ecotoxicology. Disturbed movement behavior is often related to neurotoxicity and can affect drift, mate-finding, predator avoidance, and therefore population dynamics. We show the practical implementation of the ToxmateLab, a new device t

Tracing the environmental lifecycle of nanoparticles: pathways, persistence, and ecotoxicological impacts.

The rapid production and extensive use of nanoparticles (NPs) in biomedical, industrial, agricultural, and environmental technologies have led to increased release into natural ecosystems, heightening concerns about their environmental fate and ecological risks. Nanoparticles, owing to their nan and biological toxicity via three primary mechanismsoscale dimensions and distinctive physicochemical properties, exhibit intricate and dynamic behaviour in environmental systems, undergoing processes such as aggregation, dissolution, surface alteration, and interactions with biotic and abiotic compone

Multiomics Insights into the Ecotoxicological Effects of Soil Microplastics on Crop Plants.

Microplastics (MPs) have become pervasive contaminants. This is due to plastic mulching, wastewater irrigation, and sludge application. Concentrations of MPs in intensive farming regions have been recorded at 41,741 particles/kg. MPs are absorbed by crop roots and leaves and then travel to reproductive organs. In these organs, they cause oxidative stress, genotoxicity, and toxicity, which disrupts nutrient uptake, photosynthesis, and crop yield. This review summarizes 20 years (2003-2024) of studies on MP-distribution in soil-crop systems and their phytotoxicity mechanisms, highlighting the pi
