Zika virus knowledge and attitudes in Ecuador.

Since its discovery in 1947 in Uganda, ZIKV has spread to 61 countries with a total of 229,238 confirmed human cases worldwide. Specifically, Ecuador has recorded 3,058 confirmed cases and 7 confirmed cases of congenital syndrome associated with ZIKV. Using the Health Belief Model (HBM), this pilot study was conducted to assess Zika virus-related knowledge and attitudes among adults in Ecuador. The survey data were collected in public places in rural and urban areas of Ecuador in May 2016. Seven items measured ZIKV knowledge and 23 items measured attitudes toward ZIKV. A total of 181 Ecuadoria

Characterization of ascaris from ecuador and zanzibar.

To shed light on the epidemiology of ascariasis in Ecuador and Zanzibar, 177 adult worms retrieved by chemo-expulsion from either people or pigs were collected, measured and subjected to polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Upon double digestion with RsaI and HaeIII, PCR-RFLP analysis revealed the presence of A. lumbricoides in people and A. suum in pigs in Ecuador. In contrast, while there are no pigs on Zanzibar, of the 56 worms obtained from people, one was genotyped as A. suum. No a

[Occupational exposure to fungicides in floriculture in Ecuador].

Floriculture represents one of the major sources of income in the Ecuadorian Andean Region that can be carried out either in open fields as in greenhouses by using chemical compounds, growing hormones and xenobiotics. Among pesticides, ethylenbisdithiocarbamate (EBDTCs) fungicides represent the most extensively used. The aim of the study was the assessment of exposure to EBDTCs in Ecuadorian floricultural workers by the determination of the urinary excretion of the main metabolite of these compounds, ethylenethiourea (ETU). For this purpose, thirty-six floriculture workers and 7 unexposed heal

Reduction of the cesarean delivery rate in Ecuador.

OBJECTIVE: This quasi-experimental study tested a method to safely reduce the rate of cesarean delivery in Ecuador. METHOD: Hospital policy was modified to provide co-management for cesarean candidates at the major maternity hospital in Quito. Cesarean rates before (n=14743) and after (n=12351) the intervention were compared by chi-square and multiple logistic regression with other major maternity hospitals (before, n=12514; after, n=9590). Characteristics of cesarean candidates who had vaginal or cesarean deliveries in the intervention hospital were compared by chi-square (n=1584). RESULT:

The epidemiology of cutaneous leishmaniasis in subtropical Ecuador.

An epidemiologic survey (n = 466) was conducted in an area of subtropical rainforest in north-west Ecuador with the following objectives: (1) to determine the prevalence of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), (2) to identify the Leishmania species causing human disease, (3) to investigate the major clinical manifestations of leishmaniasis, (4) to study cellular and humoral immune response indicators associated with disease status and (5) to identify risk factors for CL. Fourteen percent of subjects had parasitologically confirmed CL; 33% had evidence of prior disease. However, 17.2% of subjects with

Abdominal sparganosis in Ecuador: a case report.

Sparganosis, infection with plerocercoids of the pseudophyllidean tapeworm Spirometra, rarely has been described in Ecuador. We report the details of a human case of sparganosis identified serendipitously in the course of an abdominal hernia repair. The parasite was found moving freely upon the external oblique fascia adjacent to the site of a direct abdominal hernia. The organism was recovered intact, photographed while alive and preserved for subsequent detailed morphological studies. The presumed route of entry into this patient was percutaneous, after application of a poultice of snake fle

Onchocerciasis and acquired groin hernias in Ecuador.

A prevalence of 4.3% (52) groin hernias were observed in 10 communities in the hyperendemic areas of onchocerciasis in Ecuador. Of the 31 patients in whom herniorrhaphy was performed, 87.1% presented with the acquired type of hernias; 15 (48.4%) with direct inguinal and 12 (38.7%) with femoral hernias, while only 12.9% (4) presented with indirect inguinal or the congenital type of hernias. This is in sharp contrast to the usual preponderance of indirect inguinal hernias reported in surveys of other population groups. Mechanisms for this association are discussed.

[Mutant alleles associated to chloroquine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethanime resistance in Plasmodium falciparum of the Ecuador-Peru and Ecuador-Colombia borders].

The frequency of mutations in pfCRT and DHFR/DHPS genes of Plasmodium falciparum associated with resistance to chloroquine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine was evaluated in 83 strains from the districts of Esmeralda and Machala, located on the borders of Ecuador-Peru and Ecuador-Colombia in 2002. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), conventional and its variants, was used. Mutations in the pfCRT gene were found in more than 90% of the samples from Esmeralda and Machala. For the DHFR gene, 90% of the strains were mutant samples from Esmeralda, 3 were double mutations and 1 was a triple mutation. In Ma

Cutaneous leishmaniasis "chiclero's ulcer" in subtropical Ecuador.

An 18-year-old female presented with a severe ulcerative lesion on her right ear of 6 weeks duration. Her right ear was edematous and erythematous with a large, painless ulcerative lesion covering a third of the pinna and satellite papular lesions on the posterior. She was diagnosed with chiclero's ulcer. A skin smear stained with Diff-quik showed abundant Leishmania parasites. Chiclero's ulcer is a rare clinical presentation and is typically severe and difficult to treat. Physicians in Ecuador recommend administering prolonged intramuscular Glucantime. Side effects are common and can be sever

Craniofacial malformation among endemic cretins in Ecuador.

Nearly 6% of the inhabitants of two villages in Ecuador are deaf-mute and mentally retarded cretins. These communities are situated in the Andean highlands where environmental and dietary stores of iodine are extremely scarce. Endemic goiter and cretinism are widespread, and 10% of the cretins are additionally burdened with dwarfism and facial dysmorphia. Those with obvious involvement of the skeletal system were selected in order to study the extent of craniofacial malformation. Their appearance is characterized by midface hypoplasia, a broad nose with a depressed bridge, and a conspicuous ci

Hepatic veno-occlusive disease originating in Ecuador.

A case of hepatic veno-occlusive disease manifested by massive ascites is described in a 35-year-old female. She had consumed an herbal tea containing a Crotalaria plant species for 6 months prior to evaluation. Inferior vena cava and hepatic veins were patent by angiography. Liver biopsy showed histological changes typical of hepatic veno-occlusive disease, consisting of centrilobular congestion and sublobular hepatic vein obstruction. Complete clinical, biochemical, and histological recovery was documented 1 year after ingestion of the brew was discontinued. This is the first case known to b

Histoplasma capsulatum in wild mammals from Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Histoplasma capsulatum is a globally distributed dimorphic fungal pathogen endemic to the Americas, Africa, and Asia. It causes histoplasmosis, a disease acquired via inhalation of spores from contaminated environments. It thrives in nitrogen-rich soils and is disseminated by avian and chiropteran reservoirs. Histoplasma capsulatum has been found in wild mammals such as rodents, marsupials, felines, and xenarthrans, suggesting diverse reservoirs that may influence its maintenance and transmission in endemic areas. This study aimed to detect H. capsulatum in tissues of wild small ma

Malignant salivary gland tumors in Quito, Ecuador.

OBJECTIVES: Malignant salivary gland tumors (MSGT) are uncommon. Age-standardized incidence rates are 0.5 and 0.3 per 100,000 in Quito, Ecuador; and 1.0 and 0.7 per 100,000 in the USA (SEER Program), for males and females, respectively. The goal of this study was to review a 16-year experience of a major general hospital in the treatment of these lesions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1982 to 1998, 308 salivary gland tumors were surgically treated at the Hospital 'Carlos Andrade Marin' of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security in Quito, Ecuador, an Andean city of approximately 2 million inh

Unveiling the determinants of femicide in Ecuador: a comprehensive analysis.

This paper reports an investigation of the determinants of femicide using the context of Ecuador as case of study. To do so, we use official data spanning 2018 to 2022 from the National Survey on Family Relations and Gender Violence against Women in Ecuador with a dataset revealing 1,325 femicides and violent deaths of cisgender women and girls. Using a probit regression model, we find that several variables related to perpetrators' such as level of education, employment status, and variables related to the crime itself such as location emerge as pivotal factors in understanding femicide incid

Leptospirosis in Ecuador: Current Status and Future Prospects.

The location of Ecuador-an equatorial nation-favors the multiplication and dispersal of the Leptospira genus both on the Pacific Coast and in the Amazon tropical ecoregions. Nevertheless, leptospirosis epidemiology has not been fully addressed, even though the disease has been recognized as a significant public health problem in the country. The purpose of this literature review is to update knowledge on the epidemiology and geographical distribution of Leptospira spp. and leptospirosis in Ecuador to target future research and develop a national control strategy. A retrospective literature sea
