Active edible films based on okara soluble dietary fiber (SDF), pectin, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) and thyme essential oil (TEO) were successfully prepared. We aimed to exploit biodegradable edible films and realize the full utilization of waste resources. The effects of different amounts of pectin on the properties and structural characterization of the composite film with or without TEO were studied using a solution casting evaporation method. In general, the addition of TEO can improve the properties of the composite membrane. Pectin was homogeneously distributed within the film

Biodegradable starch-based films often suffer from insufficient mechanical strength, which limits their practical applications. To enhance film performance, this study optimized the preparation of composite thermoplastic starch (CTPS) films composed of corn starch, sorbitol, whey protein isolate (WPI), and gallic acid (GA). The optimized formulation-0.074 g/mL corn starch, 47.5% sorbitol, 5.6% WPI, and 2.0 mg/mL GA-yielded films with a tensile strength of 3.11 ± 0.31 MPa and an elongation at break of 43.35 ± 0.69%, achieving a desirable balance between flexibility and strength. Edible films are manufactured from natural, renewable, nontoxic, and biodegradable polymers and are safe alternatives to plastic food packaging. Despite ongoing research, biopolymer-based edible films still are not at a quality to ensure total commercial replacement of synthetic packaging materials. The study aims to compare the effectiveness of some novel methods employed to improve edible film properties. These include dispersion of orange oil (1% & 2% v/v) and/or curcumin into guar gum (GG), glycerol and lecithin-based edible films that are further reinforced with Sodium trimetaphosphate (S

Gelatin is the product resulting from collagen denaturation, which, in addition to conventional sources of extraction, can be recovered from wastes and byproducts rich in collagen widely generated by the industrial activities of poultry and cattle slaughterhouses and the fishing industry. Given the properties of good film-forming ability, nontoxicity, and biocompatibility for the addition of other compounds to obtain composite materials, gelatin is a potential polymer for the production of biodegradable films and, if extracted from waste sources, can contribute to the reduction of environmenta

Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from chitin, is primarily extracted from crustaceans' and insects' exoskeletons. Unlike chitin, which is insoluble, chitosan is produced by deacetylating chitin, enhancing its solubility and functionality. While crustacean chitosan has been widely utilized due to its availability from seafood waste, it poses challenges such as seasonal limitations, environmental concerns, and heavy metal contamination. Insects are a sustainable alternative, as they can be mass-reared year-round with minimal ecological impact, providing a renewable source of high-quality chitosan

Piperine is an alkaloid that is responsible for the pungency of black pepper and long pepper. This hydrophobic compound causes a spicy sensation when it comes in contact with trigeminal neurons of the oral cavity. Piperine has low solubility in water, which presents difficulties in examining the psychophysical properties of this stimulus by standard aqueous chemosensory tests. This report describes approaches that utilize novel edible film formulations for delivering precise amounts of piperine to the human oral cavity. These films were then used to identify detection thresholds for piperine,

Edible coating can improve fruits shelf life and, consequently, reduce their waste. Chitosan, which presents a potential for chemical modifications and capacity to form films, can be an alternative for coating due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antimicrobial properties. Chitosan film can be obtained through casting method presenting suitable mechanical properties, such as resistance to traction and elongation, ability to adhere to surfaces and selective permeability to gases, such as O2 and CO2. However, it is highly permeable to water vapor, which can limit its potential coati

Developing eco-friendly edible packaging films with multi-functional properties is highly required. This study involved synthesizing carbon dots (CDs) from dragon fruit, then incorporating them into a composite film based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/corn starch (CS) to create a functional package to extend the shelf life of fresh shiitake mushrooms. Functional composite films with varying levels of CDs were formulated. The films' characteristics of morphology, mechanical properties, antioxidant properties, etc. were then determined, as well as their preservation effect on the fresh shiitake mus

Postharvest loss of tropical fruits remains a significant challenge for food security and sustainability, as their delicate texture and high metabolic activity make them highly susceptible to rapid deterioration through handling and distribution. This study investigates the application of an edible coating technique to reduce loss, deterioration, and spoilage, and to increase the shelf-life of guava fruit. The fruits were immersed in chitosan and edible oils (moringa, lemongrass, marjoram, and rosemary). Chitosan (2%) and 1-2% moringa oil extended the shelf life of fruits by up to 24 days. Mor

The utilisation of edible sources of starch such as corn, wheat, potato, and cassava has become the common approach to develop biodegradable food packaging. However, the future food security issue from the wide application of such edible starch sources has become a major concern. Consequently, exploring non-edible sources of starch for starch-based biodegradable food packaging and their property enhancement have become one of the common research interests. Although there has been a great potentials of synthesising biodegradable food packaging by direct utilisation of agro-industrial waste cass

Coating can reduce fruit weight loss and delay wrinkling, but often induces off-flavor formation. This study aims to develop coatings for reducing off-flavor formation in citrus fruits. Initially, nine single-component edible coatings were screened, identifying lipid-based carnauba (CNW) and candelilla wax (CW) as the most effective in reducing off-flavor and weight loss, respectively. Twenty CW-CNW composite coatings (ECs) were then formulated, with EC14 (2% CNW + 8% CW) showing optimal performance. The ethanol, acetaldehyde, and weight loss in EC14-coated Satsuma mandarin were 20.25%, 28.78%
