This pilot study explored the strengths and weaknesses of an informal education program and identified elements of the program valued by participants. Participants were men living in a minimum security prison who had been incarcerated for ten or more years. The outside researcher was joined by three former program participants as co-researchers. Together, they interviewed 27 residents who completed the informal education program. Interviews were transcribed and de-identified. Researchers used the summative content analysis approach to analyze the data. Initial content analysis yielded five con

This study evaluated factors affecting the severity of bite site necrosis and systemic symptoms resulting from envenomation among patients bitten by Malayan pit vipers (Calloselasma rhodostoma) in Thailand. We studied 145 victims prospectively. An additional 80 medical records were obtained for a retrospective study. Collected data included gender of the victims, anatomic locations of bites, where attacks took place, and predisposing factors and how they might have affected the clinical course. Most patients presented with minimal to moderate symptoms. Only eight patients required surgical wou

Child maltreatment is a global phenomenon that affects the lives of millions of children. Worldwide, as many as one in three to six children encounter physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from their caregivers. Children who experience abuse often show alterations in stress reactivity. Although this alteration may reflect a physiological survival response, it can nevertheless be harmful in the long run-increasing children's disruptive behavior and jeopardizing their development in multiple domains. But can we undo this process in at-risk children? Based on several lines of pioneering research,

OBJECTIVE: Child maltreatment is an adverse childhood experience associated with reductions in child well-being. This study examines whether an evidence-based parenting intervention delivered to families served by the child welfare system (CWS) affects pediatric health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
METHOD: This study is a randomized controlled trial of Pathways Triple P (PTP) delivered to families with open child welfare cases for child physical abuse or neglect (N = 119). Children were 5 to 11 years old and remained in the home after the investigation. The primary outcome measure for this

OBJECTIVE: Early interventions for toddlers with expressive and receptive language delays have not resulted in positive expressive language outcomes. This randomized controlled trial tested the effects on language outcomes of a caregiver-implemented communication intervention targeting toddlers at risk for persistent language delays.
METHODS: Participants included 97 toddlers, who were between 24 and 42 months with language scores at least 1.33 SDs below the normative mean and no other developmental delays, and their caregivers. Toddlers were randomly assigned to the caregiver-implemented int

The Working Alliance Inventory Short form (WAI-S) comprises 12 items that measure 3 subdomains (goal, task, and bond). In the present study, we evaluated the factor structure of WAI-S in a parent management training (PMT) context, by investigating a series of different factor models, including standard confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) models and more recent alternatives, like the exploratory structural equation model (ESEM), the bifactor-CFA, and the bifactor exploratory structural equation model (B-ESEM). The study sample consisted of 259 Norwegian parents receiving PMT - the Oregon model (

BACKGROUND: Medial ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury is increasingly prevalent in professional baseball pitchers, and significant research has been devoted to understanding the risk factors and prevention strategies associated with it. To date, no study has investigated what the players themselves believe causes and prevents the injury.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the opinions of UCL injuries among pitchers, including professional athletes.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: A total of 214 baseball pitchers (45 high school/college, 169 Major League Baseball [MLB]/Minor League Baseb

Parent training (PT) interventions constitute a gold standard for preventing a variety of mental health symptomatology in children and youth. Yet, there is a need to understand the best ways to deliver specific core PT components to caregivers who have experienced adverse backgrounds as children and contextual stressors that impact their parenting practices. In this review paper for clinicians and prevention interventionists, we reflect on lessons learned in a 15-year program of parenting prevention research with low-income Latine immigrants in the United States who have experienced significan

Families who live in poverty face disadvantages that can hinder their children's development in many ways, write Greg Duncan, Katherine Magnuson, and Elizabeth Votruba-Drzal. As they struggle to get by economically, and as they cope with substandard housing, unsafe neighborhoods, and inadequate schools, poor families experience more stress in their daily lives than more affluent families do, with a host of psychological and developmental consequences. Poor families also lack the resources to invest in things like high-quality child care and enriched learning experiences that give more affluent

The strong and ever-growing evidence base demonstrating that physical punishment places children at risk for a range of negative outcomes, coupled with global recognition of children's inherent rights to protection and dignity, has led to the emergence of programs specifically designed to prevent physical punishment by parents. This paper describes promising programs and strategies designed for each of three levels of intervention - indicated, selective, and universal - and summarizes the existing evidence base of each. Areas for further program development and evaluation are identified.

This article deals with refusal to attend school and dropping out of school from the point of view of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychology, in German speaking countries and from the perspective of Swiss schools and their administrative bodies. General epidemiological data on refusal to attend school show that approximately 5% of children and adolescents are likely to try to avoid attending school at some point. There is very little data available on the frequency of school drop-out. In the past two years (2011 and 2012), approximately 2% of all patients seen for the first time at the

PRINCIPLE: Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protection and skin cancer awareness are essential in the avoidance of cutaneous malignancies. Skin cancer prevention programmes involve public educational campaigns, for example, for outdoor workers or school children. Since nonprofessional sun exposure (e.g. during outdoor sport) is increasing with today's lifestyle, we assessed UVR protection and skin cancer awareness among recreational athletes. This survey-based, paper/pencil study was designed to assess UVR protection and skin cancer awareness among recreational athletes attending the largest runnin

INTRODUCTION: This article discusses the development and pretesting of key visual imagery in a promotional campaign developed in Quebec, Canada. This campaign is the media-based component of a broader prevention strategy involving the use of the Triple P program (Sanders, 1999).
OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to pretest with parents the preliminary version of a poster that uses the campaign's key visual imagery prior to final production.
METHOD: In total, 26 parents from the regions of Quebec City and Montreal participated in four focus groups.
RESULTS: Two general themes emerged from the focu

Preventive parenting interventions can experience challenges in maximizing dosage, or the amount of intervention received by parents. This study examined the associations of baseline mother, father, and very preterm infant (VPT; <32 weeks) characteristics with satisfactory intervention attendance of the family within a randomized controlled trial of Baby Triple P for Preterm Infants (Colditz et al., 2015). Mothers (n = 160) and fathers (n = 115) completed questionnaires prior to the randomization of family units (n = 160) to receive the intervention. Satisfactory session attendance (seven or e

We conducted a 6 month, randomized trial of parent training (PT) versus a parent education program (PEP) in 180 young children (158 boys, 22 girls), ages 3-7 years, with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). PT was superior to PEP in decreasing disruptive and noncompliant behaviors. In the current study, we assess moderators of treatment response in this trial. Thirteen clinical and demographic variables were evaluated as potential moderators of three outcome variables: the Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Irritability subscale (ABC-I), Home Situations Questionnaire (HSQ), and Clinical Global Impressions

BACKGROUND: Parent-delivered home programmes are frequently used to remediate speech and language difficulties in young children. However, the evidence base for this service delivery model is limited.
AIMS: The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the effectiveness of parent-implemented home programmes in facilitating the development of children's speech and language skills, and to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and feasibility of this service delivery method.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: A systematic search of the PsycINFO, CINAHL and ERIC databases was conducted. Quality appraisal of
