CONTEXT: Academic achievement and social class are positively related and applications to medical schools reflect a class-based bias favouring middle-class candidates. Applying a measure that is class-free could be useful as an indicator of a potential good health professional may widen the pool of applicants. In the Working in Health Access Programme (WHAP), we report on the potential usefulness of such a measure. In addition, we describe a programme for raising awareness of higher education (HE) and careers in health care.
METHODS: Pupils attending schools with low HE participation rates sa

PURPOSE: To compare the academic performances of Asian-American medical students--before, during, and after medical school--with those of white students.
METHOD: The 140 Asian-American graduates and 2,269 white graduates from the classes of 1981-1992 at Jefferson Medical College were studied prospectively: data on academic performance, indebtedness, and delayed graduation were analyzed and compared for all the graduates. F-tests, chi-square tests, and regression models were used.
RESULTS: The Asian-Americans had statistically significantly higher scores on the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)

To acquire information about the characteristics of U.S. citizens who had recently studied medicine abroad, the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and the Association of American Medical Colleges merged independently collected data on a study group of 10,460 U.S. citizens who attended 359 medical schools in 75 foreign countries and who took their first ECFMG examination between 1978 and 1982. The study group was markedly heterogeneous: 21 percent were not U.S. citizens at birth, 32 percent did not have English as a native language, and 12 percent had two or more years

OBJECTIVE: To develop a one week widening access summer school for 16 year old pupils from non-traditional backgrounds who are considering applying to medical school, and to identify its short term impact and key success factors.
DESIGN: Action research with partnership schools in deprived inner city areas in five overlapping phases: schools liaison, recruitment of pupils and assessment of needs, programme design, programme delivery, and evaluation. The design phase incorporated findings from one to one interviews with every pupil, and workshops and focus groups for pupils, parents, teachers,

CONTEXT: Medical schools use a variety of preadmission indices to select potential students. These indices generally include undergraduate grade point average (GPA), Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores, and preadmission interviews.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the admission indices used by Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine are associated with the academic and clinical performance of their students.
METHODS: Associations between the prematriculation variables of undergraduate science GPA, undergraduate total GPA, MCAT component scores, and interview s

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine and College of Arts and Sciences developed its combined BA/MD degree program, which will increase the medical school class from 75 students to 100 in the fall of 2010, to address the critical issue of physician shortages in underserved New Mexico. The program, which began operation at the undergraduate (i.e., college) level in 2006, expands opportunities in medical education for New Mexico students, especially those from rural and underserved minority communities, and prepares them to practice in underserved areas of New Mexico. In the BA/MD prog

INTRODUCTION: The approval of pegvaliase (PALYNZIQ®) represented a paradigm shift in the management of phenylketonuria (PKU) by enabling sustained reductions in blood phenylalanine levels and permitting an unrestricted diet. However, as it is a bacterially derived injectable therapy, individuals receiving pegvaliase may experience skin-related adverse events (AEs). Anticipating these AEs and other pegvaliase-related skin concerns and having best-practice strategies to manage them may be crucial to achieving optimal patient outcomes.

PURPOSE: Patients with "allergy" to iodine and shellfish often do not obtain necessary radiologic procedures due to anxiety about potential radiocontrast media reactions. This study assesses the impact of an educational intervention to dispel these myths.
METHODS: The authors surveyed 252 internal medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, radiology, obstetrics/gynecology, and surgery health professionals before and after an educational intervention. Pre- and posttest responses were analyzed to assess the impact of the intervention on beliefs about radiocontrast media reactions and their perce

BACKGROUND: The pain of mammography is recognised as a significant deterrent for women considering this examination, and may affect participation in breast screening.
OBJECTIVES: To review interventions to reduce or relieve the pain and discomfort of screening mammography.
SEARCH STRATEGY: For this update, the Cochrane Breast Cancer Group Specialised Register was searched on the 18th May 2006. Other databases searched were MEDLINE (1966 to November 2006), CINAHL (1982 to December 2006), EMBASE (1988 to 2006) and reference lists of articles. To address physician maldistribution in Alabama and the Southeast region. The University of Alabama established the Biomedical Sciences Preparation Program (BioPrep) in five rural high schools. Its purpose is to help rural, disadvantaged high school students develop academically and socially so that they will be motivated and able to enroll in and progress successfully through college, specifically in pre-health professional curricula. It aims to develop their desire to return eventually to rural areas of Alabama as professionals. Project students are compared with two control groups. Performa

A controlled cross-over study in 12 Victorian public hospitals was performed to examine the power of marketing techniques in influencing prescribing. The targeted prescribing behaviour was the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in surgery, and the criteria for judging the appropriateness of therapy were its duration and timing, as are detailed in the fourth edition of the booklet Antibiotic guidelines. The first intervention was mounted in 1985 in six hospitals (two metropolitan teaching hospitals, one suburban general hospital and three rural hospitals), and six matched hospitals acted as control

BACKGROUND: Opioid abuse is widespread in the United States and the risk for chronic use is increased in surgical patients, including patients with thyroid and parathyroid.
METHODS: Records for 171 patients prior to and 67 patients following implementation of an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol for ambulatory thyroid/parathyroid surgeries were reviewed. The ERAS included superficial cervical plexus block, multimodal premedication, and postoperative reliance on acetaminophen and ibuprofen with judicious prescribing of opioids.
RESULTS: Post-ERAS patients were prescribed a mean

The authors undertook an enquiry among 287 dentists to assess their practice of prophylactic antibiotic therapy against infectious endocarditis. Of the 227 dentists who replied, most (90%) knew that a dental extraction required prophylactic antibiotic therapy. They correctly prescribed antibiotics to prosthetic valve patients (84%) and to those with post-rheumatic cardiac disease (87%). Many dentists considered that coronary bypass (66%), mitral valve prolapse without mitral regurgitation (65%) or chronic myocardial infarction (68%) also required antibiotic prophylaxis, contrary to published r

INTRODUCTION: Human immunoglobulin (IG) therapy, administered intravenously (IVIG) or subcutaneously (SCIG), is a cornerstone treatment for primary and secondary immunodeficiencies (PID and SID) and is increasingly used in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Although generally safe, adverse drug reactions (ADR) may affect treatment adherence, patient safety, and quality of care. Practical recommendations for the prevention and management of IG-associated ADR remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: To develop expert-based recommendations for the prevention, monitoring, classification, and management of A

With an aging population, atrial fibrillation is becoming an increasingly common cause of hospital admission. Patients with recurrent, symptomatic persistent atrial fibrillation often require repeated admissions to the hospital for cardioversion. The development of the atrial defibrillator has empowered such patients to take charge of their condition and perform cardioversion on themselves at home. This liberates them from the worry of hospitalization and can increase patient confidence. The implantation of an atrial defibrillator, however, has some disadvantages, and long-term use of the devi
