Divergent splanchnic sympathetic efferent nerve pathways regulate interleukin-10 and tumour necrosis factor-α responses to endotoxaemia.

The efferent branches of the splanchnic sympathetic nerves that enhance interleukin-10 (IL-10) and suppress tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF) levels in the reflex response to systemic immune challenge were investigated in anaesthetized, ventilated rats. Plasma levels of TNF and IL-10 were measured 90 min after intravenous lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 60 µg/kg). Splanchnic nerve section, ganglionic blockade with pentolinium tartrate or β2 adrenoreceptor antagonism with ICI 118551 all blocked IL-10 responses. Restoring plasma adrenaline after splanchnic denervation rescued IL-10 responses. TNF response

Topography of the major superficial lymph nodes and their efferent lymph pathways in the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus).

The koala has an inguinoaxillary lymph trunk on either side of the ventral midline, and this carries efferent lymph from the superficial inguinal lymph node directly to the deep axillary lymph node. The superficial lymph nodes are large and soft compared with those of the domestic species, and each lymph centre usually contains only one or two large lymph nodes. Koalas have a rostral mandibular lymph node which has not been described in other species, but lack popliteal and subiliac lymph nodes. The superficial lymph nodes which are readily palpable in the live koala are the facial, rostral ma

Evaluation of Medial Olivocochlear Neural Efferent Pathway in Tinnitus Perception in Normal-hearing Individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to investigate a possible role of the Medial Olivocochlear (MOC) efferent neural pathway and neural connections responsible for tinnitus generation in silence/sensory deprivation. DESIGN: By placing normal hearing participants in a sound booth for 10 minutes, silence/sensory deprivation was created. This offered assessment of MOC neural pathway in normal hearing participants in silence. Hyperactivity of MOC neural pathway was assessed by its more suppressive effect on Transient Otoacoustic Emissions (TEOAEs) in silence. The required auditory measureme

Disruption of estrogen receptor signaling and similar pathways in the efferent ductules and initial segment of the epididymis.

Seminiferous tubular atrophy may involve indirectly the disruption of estrogen receptor-α (ESR1) function in efferent ductules of the testis. ESR1 helps to maintain fluid resorption by the ductal epithelium and the inhibition or stimulation of this activity in rodent species will lead to fluid accumulation in the lumen. If not resolved, the abnormal buildup of fluid in the head of the epididymis and efferent ductules becomes a serious problem for the testis, as it leads to an increase in testis weight, tubular dilation and seminiferous epithelial degeneration, as well as testicular atrophy. The vagus nerve role in antidepressants action: Efferent vagal pathways participate in peripheral anti-inflammatory effect of fluoxetine.

The mechanisms responsible for the anti-inflammatory effects of antidepressants are only partially understood. Published data indicate that the vagal anti-inflammatory pathway could be involved in mediating this effect. Therefore, we investigated the influence of subdiaphragmatic vagotomy on the anti-inflammatory effect of fluoxetine in rats injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce an inflammatory response. The extent of this response was determined by measurement of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 plasma levels, along with gene expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in the spleen and selected st

Reconstruction of atonic bladder innervation after spinal cord injury: A bladder reflex arc with afferent and efferent pathways.

Background Establishing bladder reflex arcs only with the efferent pathway to induce micturition after spinal cord injury (SCI) has been successful. However, the absence of sensory function and micturition desires can lead to serious complications. Objectives To reconstruct a bladder reflex arc with both afferent and efferent pathways to achieve atonic bladder innervation after SCI. Methods A reflex arc was established by microanastomosis of the S2 dorsal root to the peripheral process of the L5 dorsal ganglion and the L5 ventral root to the S2 ventral root. The functions of the reflex arc wer

C-type natriuretic peptide stimulates pancreatic exocrine secretion in the rat: role of vagal afferent and efferent pathways.

We previously reported that C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) increases amylase release in isolated pancreatic acini through natriuretic peptide receptor C activation and enhances pancreatic exocrine secretion via vagal pathways when applied to the brain. In the present study we sought to establish whether CNP was involved in the peripheral regulation of pancreatic secretion. Anesthetized rats were prepared with pancreatic duct cannulation, pyloric ligation and bile diversion into the duodenum. CNP dose-dependently enhanced pancreatic flow, chloride and protein excretion but did not modify bica

Pathological tau propagation from the brain to the colon via the vagal efferent pathway in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles, leading to cognitive decline. Recent research has highlighted the involvement of the gut-brain axis (GBA) in AD progression, suggesting that the disease may also affect the gut. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the transmission of tau from the brain to the gut via the vagus nerve and its impact on gut function, we aimed to develop a novel in vitro system to simulate the GBA. DESIGN: We used an AD animal model to examine the spread of tau from the

Sacral nerve stimulation increases gastric accommodation in rats: a spinal afferent and vagal efferent pathway.

Impaired gastric accommodation (GA) has been frequently reported in various gastrointestinal diseases. No standard treatment strategy is available for treating impaired GA. We explored the possible effect of sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) on GA and discovered a spinal afferent and vagal efferent mechanism in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats (450-500 g) with a chronically implanted gastric cannula and ECG electrodes were studied in a series of sessions to study: 1) the effects of SNS with different parameters on gastric tone, compliance, and accommodation using a barostat device; two sets of parameter

Anti-inflammatory effects of sacral nerve stimulation: a novel spinal afferent and vagal efferent pathway.

Sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) was reported to improve 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis in rats. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the SNS anti-inflammatory effect is mediated via the local sacral splanchnic nerve or the spinal afferent-vagal efferent-colon pathway. Under general anesthesia, rats were administrated with TNBS intrarectally, and bipolar SNS electrodes were implanted unilaterally at S3. The sacral and vagal nerves were severed at different locations for the assessment of the neural pathway. SNS for 10 days improved colonic inflammation only

Similar synapse elimination motifs at successive relays in the same efferent pathway during development in mice.

In many parts of the nervous system, signals pass across multiple synaptic relays on their way to a destination, but little is known about how these relays form and the function they serve. To get some insight into this question we ask how the connectivity patterns are organized at two successive synaptic relays in a simple, cholinergic efferent pathway. We found that the organization at successive relays in the parasympathetic nervous system strongly resemble each other despite the different embryological origin and physiological properties of the pre- and postsynaptic cells. Additionally, we

Activation of an efferent cholinergic pathway produces strong protection against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVE: A vagus nerve-mediated, brain cholinergic protective mechanism activated by melanocortin peptides is operative in conditions of circulatory shock; moreover, there is anatomical evidence of dual vagal-cardiac efferent pathways in rats, which could play different roles in controlling heart function. Therefore, we investigated the role and functional mechanism of such vagal efferent pathway(s) in an experimental model of ischemic heart disease. DESIGN: Randomized experimental study. SETTING: Research laboratory. SUBJECTS: Adult Wistar rats of either sex. INTERVENTIONS: After bilate

Excitant amino acids and audiogenic seizures in the genetically epilepsy-prone rat. II. Efferent seizure propagating pathway.

Previous studies indicate that the inferior colliculus is the brain stem auditory nucleus most sensitive to the chemical blockade of audiogenic seizures in the genetically epilepsy-prone rat. Other auditory structures do not appear to be as important. This study attempted to define the efferent pathways involved in propagation of the seizure from the colliculus to the spinal cord where the motor components of the convulsion are generated. This study also determined whether certain nuclei which have been implicated in the propagation of seizures in other epilepsy models are involved in audiogen

Comparison of 3D model-based and slide-based teaching for afferent and efferent spinal cord pathways: a pre-test/post-test study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the organization of afferent and efferent spinal cord pathways can be challenging for students due to their complex spatial relationships. This study aimed to develop a three-dimensional (3D) educational model demonstrating these pathways and to compare student learning outcomes between model-based instruction and conventional slide-based teaching. METHODS: A pre-test/post-test educational study was conducted with second-year dental students (n = 60). Transverse sections of the C4 and T7 vertebrae were designed and 3D-printed at four times their anatomical size. A sp

Efferent pathways from the suprachiasmatic nucleus to the horizontal limbs of diagonal band promote NREM sleep during the dark phase in mice.

The regulation of circadian rhythms and the sleep-wake states involves in multiple neural circuits. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is a circadian pacemaker that controls the rhythmic oscillation of mammalian behaviors. The basal forebrain (BF) is a critical brain region of sleep-wake regulation, which is the downstream of the SCN. Retrograde tracing of cholera toxin subunit B showed a direct projection from the SCN to the horizontal limbs of diagonal band (HDB), a subregion of the BF. However, the underlying function of the SCN-HDB pathway remains poorly understood. Herein, activation of th

Electroacupuncture at PC6 mediates cardioprotection by vagal afferent-sympathetic efferent anti-inflammatory pathway in myocardial infarction mouse.

AIMS: This study aimed to elucidate the autonomic pathways underlying the cardioprotective effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at Neiguan (PC6) after myocardial infarction (MI). Specifically, we investigated whether these protective effects are mediated through a sympathetic efferent anti-inflammatory pathway, rather than the classical vagal efferent anti-inflammatory pathways. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a mouse MI model, EA intervention was combined with surgical and pharmacological manipulations, including right cervical vagotomy, splenectomy, adrenalectomy, and peripheral sympathetic blockade.

Neural pathway of bellows response during SNM treatment revisited: Conclusive evidence for direct efferent motor response.

BACKGROUND: In sacral neuromodulation (SNM) patients, it is thought the bellows response elicited upon sacral spinal nerve stimulation is reflex-mediated. Therefore the mechanism of action of SNM is considered to be at the spinal or supraspinal level. These ideas need to be challenged. OBJECTIVE: To identify the neural pathway of the bellows response upon sacral spinal nerve stimulation. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Single tertiary center, prospective study (December 2017-June 2019) including 29 patients with overactive bladder refractory to first-line treatment. Ameliorating effects of sacral neuromodulation on gastric and small intestinal dysmotility mediated via a sacral afferent-vagal efferent pathway.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In a recent study of sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) for colonic inflammation, a possible spinal-vagal pathway was implicated. The aim of this study was to provide evidence for such a pathway by investigating the effects of SNS on dysmotility of the stomach and duodenum that are not directly innervated by the sacral efferents. METHODS: Twenty-seven rats were chronically implanted with wire electrodes for SNS and gastrointestinal slow waves. SNS was performed in several acute sessions to investigate its effects on gastric/duodenal slow waves and emptying/transit impaired by glu
