Eikenella corrodens infection of the oral cavity as a cause of bacterial endocarditis.

The authors describe the case of a 24-year-old woman with valve disease. After a bout of respiratory tract infection, she was diagnosed to have bacterial endocarditis associated with mitral valve disease. The causative agents isolated included Eikenella corrodens, Streptococcus intermedius, Bacteroides oralis and Bacteroides bivius. At the same time, the patient was found to have developed IgA immunodeficiency. A complication accompanying the cardiac disease was spontaneous pneumothorax. Since antibiotic therapy had failed, the mitral valve was replaced by a prosthetic one. After the procedure

A case of post-traumatic orbital cellulitis caused by Eikenella corrodens.

BACKGROUND: This study documents a rare instance of post-traumatic orbital cellulitis attributed to Eikenella corrodens. It underscores the significance of precise identification of this pathogen and prompt management of orbital cellulitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old male presented with a 3-day history of redness, swelling, and pain in his left eye, accompanied by increased secretions for 1 day after exposure to terrazzo ingredients. Initially diagnosed with left orbital cellulitis, he was treated with intravenous cefuroxime for 3 days without symptom improvement. Treatment was then shi

A pediatric patient with acute suppurative thyroiditis caused by Eikenella corrodens.

A previously healthy 6-year-old boy had continuous fever for 6 days before admission to our hospital. His general condition was good except for pyrexia. The left lobe of the thyroid gland was swollen, red, hot, and tender, and neck movement was limited. The provisional diagnosis was upper respiratory tract infection. We demonstrated the existence of an orifice of the left piriform sinus by esophagography in this case, and made a diagnosis of acute suppurative thyroiditis caused by a piriform sinus fistula in the hypopharynx. The causative organisms of acute suppurative thyroiditis include Pept

A case of brain abscess by Eikenella corrodens in a HIV-positive patient.

We report the case of a 61-year-old homosexual male who came to our observation because of a recent onset occipital and left frontoparietal headache, weakness, anorexia, hyperosmia and hypergeusia and psychomotor slowing, apathy and fatuous behavior. This case, besides the old problem of the differential diagnosis of intracranial mass lesions in HIV-positive patients, induces one to examine more closely the relationship between HIV, brain abscesses and Eikenella corrodens. We suspect that the primary infection was in the oral cavity, since HIV-positive patients have a higher incidence of atypi

Eikenella corrodens vertebral osteomyelitis secondary to direct inoculation: a case report.

STUDY DESIGN: A case report. OBJECTIVE: To present a unique method of inoculation with an unusual bacterial organism, Eikenella corrodens, which led to vertebral osteomyelitis and to heighten awareness of different bacterial organisms that may cause orthopedic infections. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: E. corrodens has been known to cause orthopedic infections for more than 20 years. The usual mechanism is from "Fight bite" injuries to the hand or metacarpal phalangeal joint. Eikenella osteomyelitis of the vertebral body is extremely rare. METHODS: A 65-year-old man from Indonesia developed sl

Respiratory foreign bodies and Eikenella corrodens brain abscess in two children.

We report the coexistence of aspirated foreign bodies and brain abscess in two boys. One child had aspirated a metallic needle, and in the other boy partially embedded sunflower seeds were found in the bronchial wall. Both patients had growth of Eikenella corrodens (oral gram-negative flora) from the abscess. Aspirated foreign body in the respiratory tract should be one of the diagnostic considerations if any of the normal oropharyngeal organisms such as E. corrodens is the causative organism of brain abscess.

Acute spontaneous suppurative thyroiditis caused by Eikenella corrodens presented with thyrotoxicosis.

Acute suppurative thyroiditis is a very rare and life-threatening endocrine emergency. Thyrotoxicosis is a rare condition accompanying acute suppurative thyroiditis. While the majority of the cases in the literature are caused by different reasons, spontaneous development is very rare. We present a patient with acute suppurative thyroiditis who presented to our clinic with thyrotoxic findings, and we compared the case to the literature. A 31-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with a complaint of progressive neck pain, swelling and redness on midline neck, fever, and palpitations.

Amniotic fluid infection syndrome and neonatal mortality caused by Eikenella corrodens.

Different microorganisms not commonly found in the female genital tract have been implicated as causative agents for amniotic fluid infections. Eikenella corrodens is part of the normal flora in the human oral cavity and upper respiratory tract. It is most commonly found in the clinical setting of polymicrobial infections involving human bite wounds, head and neck infections, and periodontitis. On rare occasions, E. corrodens has been reported as a cause of gynecologic infections. There are only 3 reports of documented E. corrodens chorioamnionitis of the placenta resulting in preterm labor, o

Comparative and phylogenomic analysis of Eikenella genus suggest taxonomic reclassification of Eikenella corrodens strain KCOM 3110 as novel species and reveals unique CE1 carbohydrate-active enzyme family.

The Eikenella genus includes opportunistic pathogens of clinical importance, commonly associated with infections such as endocarditis, periodontitis, wound abscesses, and respiratory tract infections; however, its taxonomy, genetic diversity, and evolutionary relationships remain poorly understood. This study aims to clarify the genomic diversity and taxonomic boundaries within the genus through comprehensive comparative and phylogenomic analyses. We conducted a genomic comparison of 63 Eikenella genomes, including 35 high-quality drafts and 5 complete genomes, to understand their phylogenetic

[Eikenella corrodens in the etiology of tubo-ovarian abscesses in patients with intrauterine devices].

The authors analyzed the microbiological findings in 39 female patients with tubo-ovarian abscesses and intrauterine devices (IUD). An anaerobic microflora was isolated in 66.67% of the aspirates after puncture of cavum Douglasi (CD) as well as in 41.67% of the abdominal exudates or abscesses during laparotomy. Eikenella corrodens was isolated from CD in three patients while in two of them the same bacterium was intraoperatively isolated from the abdominal exudate, too. All the three patients had IUD and regular sexual intercourses, orogenital inclusive, with a lot of partners. Eikenella corro

[Acute thyroiditis caused by Eikenella corrodens and abnormality of the left pyriform sinus].

A case of suppurative thyroiditis is reported. The initial course was insidious and mimicked De Quervain subacute thyroiditis. The abscess was surgically drained. It contained numerous Eikenella corrodens bacilli. Fibroscopy of pharyngo-laryngeal region showed that the left pyriform sinus was abnormal. Surgical removal of a fistula of the fourth branchial pouch was performed in order to prevent recurrence of the thyroiditis.

A Rare Presentation of Lemierre's Syndrome Caused by an Atypical Occurrence of Eikenella corrodens.

Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by a septic inflammatory condition involving internal jugular veins and is frequently caused by an oropharyngeal infection. While it usually results in pulmonary embolization, this case demonstrates a rare but significant cerebral embolization. The case involves an 18-year-old woman who experienced left-sided neck swelling and difficulty swallowing five days after a tooth extraction, an uncommon trigger. Her symptoms progressed to a headache, localized seizures, and mental state changes. Upon hospital admission, she was febrile, had noticeable neck swelling

Septicemia caused by Eikenella corrodens in a previously healthy male: A case report.

RATIONALE: The bacterium Eikenella corrodens is part of the normal microbiota of the oropharynx. It typically causes disease in patients with bite wound, immunosuppression, and those undergoing surgery, but rarely affects healthy individuals. Despite the rarity of infection induced by E corrodens, early diagnosis and therapy are important. PATIENT CONCERNS: The study reports a case of septicemia caused by E corrodens in a previously healthy male individual. The patient was admitted to hospital due to fever, fatigue, and mild cough lasting 4 weeks. Physical examination was unremarkable. Chest
