Morphological identification and phylogenetic analysis of Eimeria coypi and Eimeria fluviatilis (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) isolated from nutrias (Myocastor coypus [Rodentia]) in Japan.

The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a semiaquatic rodent that originally inhabited South America. However, the animals have spread to different continents as alien species, and their numbers are quickly increasing, especially in North America, Europe, and Eastern Asia including Japan. Although nutrias have been suggested to serve as reservoirs for pathogens, including parasites, there have been few reports on this subject. In the present study, we surveyed the gastrointestinal parasites in nutrias living in Japan to better understand their prevalence in nutrias. We collected 72 samples of intesti

A polar granule and oocyst residuum is present, but the micropyle is absent. The sporocysts are ovoid-shaped, 16.3 (13.7-18.9) × 10.7 (8.4-12.9) μm, with a shape index (length/width) of 1.52. Stieda and substieda bodies are present, the Stieda body being small and hemidome

Coccidian parasites (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from two species of caimans, Caiman yacare daudin and Caiman latirostris daudin (Alligatoridae), from Paraguay.

From October 1986 to January 1987, feces from 119 Caiman yacare and 12 Caiman latirostris were collected in Paraguay and later examined for coccidian oocysts; 69 of 119 (58%) samples from C. yacare and 3 of 12 (25%) samples from C. latirostris contained coccidian oocysts. Two eimerians infected C. yacare and both are described as new species. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria paraguayensis n. sp. are ellipsoid, 34.0 x 23.6 (26-38 x 20-29) microns with sporocysts ovoid, 14.0 x 7.1 (10-19 x 6-10) microns. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria caimani n. sp. are spheroid, 22.4 (19-29) microns with sporocysts

Global prevalence of lagomorpha coccidiosis from 1951 to 2024: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The global prevalence of coccidia infection in lagomorphs and potential risk factors were investigated through a meta-analysis of 149 studies published between 1951 and 2024. The pooled prevalence of Eimeriidae, Sarcocystidae and Cryptosporidiidae was found to be 66.0 %, 8.0 % and 6.1 %, respectively. Rabbits and hares exhibited the highest prevalence of Eimeriidae at 63.1 % and 71.8 %, while pikas had the highest prevalence of Cryptosporidiidae at 17.1 %. Countries located in the southern hemisphere exhibited the highest prevalence of Cryptosporidiidae (11.4 %). The African Region had the hig

Morphological and molecular identification of Eimeria spp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) in dairy cattle, Bos taurus from intensive dairy cattle farms in some areas of China.

Coccidiosis is among the most prevalent diseases affecting dairy cattle globally, imposing significant economic losses on the dairy industry annually. To better understand the epidemiology and species distribution of Eimeria spp. in key dairy-producing regions of China, as well as to improve species-level identification, we developed an integrated approach combining morphological characterization with single-oocyst selection technology and multi-locus-nested PCR amplification. This method enables comprehensive genetic profiling of individual oocysts through multi-locus genotyping. A total of 9

Isospora svecica sp. n. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae), a new species of coccidium from the white-spotted bluethroat Luscinia svecica cyanecula (Aves: Passeriformes: Muscicapidae).

Using a combination of morphological and molecular data, we describe a new apicomplexan parasite, Isospora svecica sp. n., from the white-spotted bluethroat, Luscinia svecica cyanecula, from the Czech Republic. Oocysts were found in its intestinal tract. Sporulation was exogenous and took 1-3 days. The oocysts were slightly ellipsoidal, of average size 26.17 × 20.33 μm, with a smooth bilayered wall. Micropyle, oocyst residuum, and polar granules were absent. Sporocysts were bottle-shaped, of an average size of 18.82 × 8.82 μm, with a thin, colourless wall. A conspicuous knob-like Stieda body w

Integrative Taxonomy of the Caryospora simplex Species Complex (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) From Vipers (Squamata: Viperidae), With Redescription and First Molecular Characterization of Caryospora jararacae.

BACKGROUND: The genus Caryospora Léger, 1904 comprises facultatively heteroxenous coccidia that predominantly parasitize snakes, with seven nominal species recorded in vipers (Viperidae). In the Neotropical region, the Jararaca Bothrops jararaca (Wied-Neuwied, 1824) and the Common Lancehead Bothrops atrox (Linnaeus, 1758) were previously the only recorded viperid hosts for Caryospora jararacae (Carini, 1939). This study aimed to provide a morphological redescription and the first molecular characterization of C. jararacae, alongside a global taxonomic review of Caryospora spp. in viperids. ME

Eimeria akrurensis n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae), a New Coccidian Parasite from the Domestic Goat (Capra hircus) in Dharashiv (Previously Osmanabad), India.

Coccidiosis caused by Eimeria species remains a significant protozoan disease affecting the health and productivity of small ruminants. During a faecal survey of domestic goats (Capra hircus) conducted in Dharashiv (Previously Osmanabad) District, Maharashtra, India (June 2013-May 2015), a new Eimeria species was identified and described. A total of 3,004 fecal samples were examined, of which 2,473 samples were positive for coccidian infection. Among these, 261 samples were found positive for the new species (Eimeria akrurensis n. sp.), with an overall prevalence of 10.6%. The oocysts of E. ak

A New Isosporan (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the Pacific Blue-Tailed Skink, Emoia caeruleocauda (Sauria: Scincidae: Eugongylinae), from Guam, U.S. Territory.

PURPOSE: Nothing is known about coccidians (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the Pacific blue-tailed skink, Emoia caeruleocauda. Here, we report mensural and morphometric data on a new species of Isospora from E. caeruleocauda from Guam, US Territory. METHODS: Feces from four E. caeruleocauda collected by hand in November 2023 were placed in individual vials containing 2.5% potassium dichromate. They were examined for sporulated oocysts after flotation in Sheather's sugar solution, measured, and photographed. RESULTS: A single (25%) E. caeruleocauda was found to be passing oocysts representing

Spinetails are a suboscine passerines of the genus Synallaxis Vieillot, 1818 which have great interest for ornithology, given the wide diversity of 37 species that are distributed throughout the Neotropical region. Despite this wide diversity and distribution, Synallaxis spp. have never been recorded as hosts of coccidian parasites. In this context, the current study describes a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 from rufous-capped spinetails Synallaxis ruficapilla Vieillot, 1819 captured in the Itatiaia National Park, which is a federal conservation unit in Southeastern Brazil. Black-goggled tanagers Trichothraupis melanops (Vieillot, 1818) are passerine birds commonly observed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Argentina and Paraguay. Tanagers are among the passerines with the highest prevalence and density of coccidian parasites, mainly due to their frugivorous feeding habits that favor fecal-oral transmission. In this context, the current study identifies a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 parasitizing black-goggled tanagers captured in the Itatiaia National Park, a protected area with a high degree of vulnerability in Southeastern Brazil.
