In the repair of cartilage defects, autologous tissue offers the advantage of lasting biocompatibility. The ability of bovine chondrocytes isolated from hyaline cartilage to generate tissue-engineered cartilage in a predetermined shape, such as a human ear, has been demonstrated; however, the potential of chondrocytes isolated from human elastic cartilage remains unknown. In this study, the authors examined the multiplication characteristics of human auricular chondrocytes and the ability of these cells to generate new elastic cartilage as a function of the length of time they are maintained i

Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is not capable of detecting signal from the deep cartilage due to its short transverse relaxation time (T2). Moreover, several quantitative MRI techniques are significantly influenced by the magic angle effect. The combinations of ultrashort echo time (UTE) MRI with magnetization transfer (UTE-MT) and Adiabatic T1ρ (UTE-AdiabT1ρ) imaging allow magic angle-insensitive assessments of all regions of articular cartilage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations between quantitative three-dimensional UTE MRI biomarkers and mechanica

Articular cartilage that lines the surface of long bones is a multilayered material. The superficial layer consists of collagen fibrils and chondrocytes that run parallel to the joint surface. In the deeper layers, the collagen fibrils are more randomly arranged and support vertical units termed chondrons containing rows of chondrocytes. In the deepest layers, the collagen fibrils run almost vertically and ultimately insert into the underlying subchondral bone. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease that affects articular cartilage and is characterized by enzymatic and mechanical breakdown of the ex

BACKGROUND: Progressive pseudorheumatoid dysplasia is a rare skeletal dysplasia mainly caused by abnormal autosomal recessive inheritance. Although the main function of cartilage is mechanical support and the characteristics of this disease is the degradation of AC, previous studies on it had been mainly focused on clinical and genetic aspects and the mechanical behavior of the cartilage affected by PPRD is still ambiguous. In this study, we investigate the mechanics and structure of the cartilage suffered disease at multi-scale, from individual chondrocytes to the bulk-scale tissue.

We reviewed two microstructural models, cellular solid models and prestressed affine network models, that have been used previously in studies of elastic behavior of soft biological materials. These models provide simple and mathematically transparent equations that can be used to interpret experimental data and to obtain quantitative predictions of the elastic properties of biological structures. In both models, volumetric density and elastic properties of the microstructure are key determinants of the macroscopic elastic properties. In the prestressed network model, geometrical rearrangement

Superficial cartilage defect is an important factor that causes osteoarthritis. Therefore, it is very important to investigate the influence of superficial cartilage defects on its surface morphology and mechanical properties. In this study, the knee joint cartilage samples of adult pig were prepared, which were treated by enzymolysis with chymotrypsin and physical removal with electric friction pen, respectively. Normal cartilage and surface treated cartilage were divided into five groups: control group (normal cartilage group), chymotrypsin immersion group, chymotrypsin wiping group, removal

BACKGROUND: Tracheomalacia (TM) is a condition of excessive tracheal collapse during exhalation. Both acquired and congenital forms of TM are believed to result from morphological changes in cartilaginous, fibrous and/or smooth muscle tissues reducing airway mechanical properties to a degree that precipitates collapse. However, neither the specific amount of mechanical property reduction nor the malacic segment lengths leading to life threatening airway collapse in TM are known. Furthermore, the specific mechanism of collapse is still debated.
METHODS: Computational nonlinear finite element m

Costal cartilage, a type of hyaline cartilage that bridges the bony ribs and sternum, is relatively understudied compared to the load bearing cartilages. Deformities of costal cartilage can result in deformation of the chest wall, where the sternum is largely pushed toward or away from the spine, pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum, respectively, with each condition having significant clinical impact. In the absence of extensive literature describing morphological features of costal cartilage, we characterized a sample from the costal margin immunohistologically and through atomic force micr

The pericellular matrix (PCM) is the narrow tissue region surrounding all chondrocytes in articular cartilage and, together, the chondrocyte(s) and surrounding PCM have been termed the chondron. Previous theoretical and experimental studies suggest that the structure and properties of the PCM significantly influence the biomechanical environment at the microscopic scale of the chondrocytes within cartilage. In the present study, an axisymmetric boundary element method (BEM) was developed for linear elastic domains with internal interfaces. The new BEM was employed in a multiscale continuum mod

Relapsing polychondritis is a cartilage tissue disease characterized by inflammatory and destructive episodes. Elastic cartilage of the ear and nose, hyaline cartilage of the joints, hyaline cartilage of vertebra and trachea are the main involvement areas. Also organs having proteoglycan structure such as eyes, heart, blood vessels, and the inner ear can be affected. In this article otologic findings of a 54-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis were presented and discussed in the light of the literature.

Background/Objectives: This study investigates the effect of mild cyclic loads on the stress state of degenerative knee joint cartilages using a combination of experimental data and numerical modeling. Methods: A three-dimensional finite element model of the knee joint was developed based on CT scans, incorporating key components such as the femur, tibia, cartilage layers, and meniscus. Special attention was given to the mechanical properties of cartilages, which were determined through high-sensitivity dynamometer tests of cartilage samples. The experimentally obtained force-displacement curv

In this study, we combined quantitative ultrashort echo time (UTE) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and an investigation by a probing device with tri-axial force sensor to seek correlations with mechanical properties of human patellar cartilage for in situ evaluation of biomechanical properties. Cartilage blocks (15 × 20 × 5 mm3) were dissected from the patella of six donors; 5 mm square regions of interest from the cartilage blocks were imaged using UTE-MR imaging sequences (T2* and magnetization transfer ratio (MTR)), and mechanical properties were measured using a micro indentation device. BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the talus presents considerable clinical challenges and is frequently associated with poor treatment outcomes. While 3D-printed customized talar prosthesis has shown promising potential in total talar replacement (TTR), current materials create a hard-soft mismatch with native cartilage, increasing local stress, accelerating wear, and causing complications. The objective of this study was to identify the most suitable combination of buffering layer material and thickness for talar prosthesis.
METHODS: This study employed dynamic biplane radiography (DBR

This study focuses on developing a synthetic, biocompatible graft for treating cartilage lesions. One-dimensional titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) were incorporated into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel and processed using freeze-drying without chemical surfactants. Upon optimization of the composition, it was found that the incorporation of TNT altered the biomechanical properties without causing any adverse physiological effects. Annealing treatment further enhanced mechanical strength and energy dissipation, promoting elasticity. The hydrogel with 2 wt % TNT achieved maximum mechanical s

Histochemical and chemical techniques have been used to identify, isolate and characterize elastin from certain bovine cartilages. The results strongly suggest that in addition to fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells, chondroblasts also synthesize elastin. Some of the possible functions of elastin in elastic cartilages are discussed and the possiblity of a new type of elastin perhaps unique to cartilage is suggested.

Although the pharyngeal wall is well known to have high elasticity, the distribution of submucosal elastic fibers has not been described. Observations of histological sections of the mid and lower pharyngeal walls from 15 elderly donated cadavers were made. We found two distinct submucosal tissue layers with a high content of elastic fibers (tentatively termed the "submucosal elastic laminae"). The inferolateral elastic lamina was restricted to the level from the upper part of the arytenoid to the lower end of the inferior cornu of the thyroid cartilage. It originated from the pharyngeal submu
