BACKGROUND: Infection and aseptic loosening are common complications of total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) and often require revision surgery. However, bone defects, along with other complications, bring an extra difficulty to the second surgery, especially for patients with a massive bone defect in the proximal ulna. Several methods including allograft or autograft have been introduced into practice, but none sufficiently solves these problems.
METHODS: We conducted a new surgical method for patients with a massive ulnar bone defect needing revision TEA. During revision arthroplasty, the ulnar p

We performed total elbow replacement, using the Souter-Strathclyde prosthesis in 19 elbows of 18 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and followed the patients for 5 (1-11) years. Pain relief was achieved initially in all patients. The average range of flexion-extension was increased by 12 degrees and pronation-supination by 40 degrees. There were no infections. 1 patient sustained an intraoperative fracture of the medial epicondyle, 3 patients developed neuropathies and 1 patient had an immediate postoperative dislocation of the joint. At follow-up, 6 prostheses had radiographic loosening, with

BACKGROUND: Radial head arthroplasty is the preferred surgical strategy for unreconstructable radial head fractures associated with complex elbow injuries. Single-diameter monoblock prostheses remain widely used and are sometimes implanted off-label as press-fit, even when the manufacturer's instructions specify cementation. Outcome data on this practice are scarce. We aimed to describe the clinical, functional, and radiographic outcomes of a single-diameter monoblock partial radial head prosthesis implanted off-label as a press-fit for complex elbow trauma.
METHODS: We retrospectively review

BACKGROUND: The lateral para-olecranon approach preserves triceps integrity while providing adequate exposure for unlinked total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). However, its effectiveness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate midterm clinical and radiographic outcomes of unlinked TEA performed via the lateral para-olecranon approach in patients with RA, focusing on triceps function, range of motion (ROM), strength, and complications.
METHODS: Among 43 elbows (39 patients) undergoing unlinked TEA with the Kudo type 6 prosthesis via the lateral para-

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Revision of total elbow arthroplasty is a challenging procedure, especially when associated with humeral bone deficiency. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the successful management of humeral-sided loosening due to bone defects, using an allograft-prosthesis composite with a humeral bone allograft.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 70-year-old female patient under medication for rheumatoid arthritis underwent revision of left total elbow arthroplasty due to major bone defect and loosening on the humeral side. The allograft-prosthesis composite method was used

BACKGROUND: Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) has increasingly become the standard treatment for nonreconstructable radial head fractures, especially in young active patients where long-lasting function restoration is of paramount importance. However, long-term evidence of the results over time is still scarce. The purpose of this study was to document the long-term outcomes of RHA for acute radial head fractures.
METHODS: Thirty-eight patients (mean age, 41.9 years) treated with RHA with at least 10 years of follow-up were included in this study for clinical and radiographic evaluation: 14 pati

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of bone defects after distal humeral tumor resection remains technically challenging because of the complex anatomy of the elbow and the need to preserve postoperative joint function. This study aimed to investigate the clinical value of a custom 3D-printed hemi-elbow prosthesis for the repair and reconstruction of distal humeral bone defects after tumor resection and to evaluate the short-term and midterm outcomes of patients treated with this technique.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 5 patients with aggressive or malignant tumors of the distal humerus

Distal humeral fractures are infrequent occurrences in clinical practice and reports of nonunion following comminuted fractures of the distal humerus, particularly those resulting in pseudarthrosis formation and severe pseudoarthritis, are exceedingly rare. This report describes the utilization of a 3D-printed customized semi-restrictive elbow prosthesis as a treatment modality for severe pseudoarthritis following comminuted fractures of the distal humerus. A 51-year-old male presented to the orthopedic outpatient department with a history of left elbow joint pain and restricted movement persi

INTRODUCTION: Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) represents a serious and challenging complication in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis. We report a case of PJI following revision total elbow arthroplasty with rheumatoid arthritis that was successfully managed with debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention augmented by continuous local antibiotic perfusion (CLAP).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman with a 39-year history of rheumatoid arthritis previously underwent revision total elbow arthroplasty for aseptic loosening. Two years following the revision surgery, she developed left e

BACKGROUND: Revision of tumor-type prosthetic fractures is very challenging in clinical work. Traditional repair methods may not be able to meet the needs of complex cases or cause greater bone damage. Therefore, more effective and reliable solutions need to be found.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents a novel revision technique for managing fractures of tumor-type total elbow prostheses. A 57-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a left distal humeral bone tumor accompanied by pathological fracture and underwent customized tumor-type total elbow prosthesis arthroplasty. After 5 year

OBJECTIVE: Complications related to triceps after total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) have become a major surgical concern. The triceps-preserving approach has the advantage of not disturbing the insertion of triceps but is disadvantaged by the reduced exposure of the elbow joint. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and radiological outcomes of TEA with a triceps-preserving approach and to compare the outcomes of TEA to treat arthropathy with that of TEA to treat acute distal humerus fracture.
METHODS: From January 2010 to December 2018, 23 patients undergoing primary TEAs were r

INTRODUCTION: Selecting the optimal radial head prosthesis to treat radial head fractures, especially in the context of complex elbow injuries like terrible triad, Monteggia, and Essex Lopresti, can be challenging, as there is currently no consensus in the field that favors a particular design. This study investigated the safety and performance of a Polished Stem Radial Head Prosthesis (PS RHP) compared to other modern RHP designs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines to capture data on a Polished Stem Radial Head Prosthesis (PS RHP) and othe

BACKGROUND: Traumatic arm amputations can be treated with replantation or surgical formalization of the stump with or without subsequent prosthetic fitting. In the literature, many authors suggest the superiority of replantation. This systematic review compared available literature to analyze whether replantation is functionally and psychologically more profitable than formalization and prosthetic fitting in patients with traumatic arm amputation.
METHODS: Functional outcome and satisfaction levels were recorded of patients with amputation levels below elbow, through elbow, and above elbow.

BACKGROUND: Instability is a recognized complication associated with unlinked total elbow implants. The best form of treatment of this problem is uncertain as very little has been written about it.
METHODS: Twelve patients underwent operative treatment of instability at the site of a capitellocondylar unlinked total elbow replacement, and the results were reviewed retrospectively. The study group included ten women and two men with an average age of fifty-eight years. Ten patients had rheumatoid arthritis. Three elbows underwent conversion to a semi-constrained hinged prosthesis. In the other

Postoperative results and complications of total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) conducted for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients at our institute were studied. Primary TEAs were performed in 72 patients. The mean follow-up period was 3.5 years. Three types of prostheses were implanted: JACE prosthesis in 34 elbows, STABLE prosthesis in 13 elbows, and KUDO prosthesis (type 5) in 32 elbows. The outcome was evaluated by the change in the range of motion and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association functional evaluation score for the elbow joint (JOA score). The arc of motion and the JOA score at discharge

BACKGROUND: The use of a metal radial head prosthesis to help stabilize an elbow with traumatic instability is appealing because internal fixation of multifragment, displaced fractures of the radial head is susceptible to either early or late failure. The newer modular prostheses are easier to size and implant, but their effectiveness has not been investigated, to our knowledge.
METHODS: Twenty-seven patients in whom a radial head replacement with a modular metal spacer prosthesis had been performed to treat traumatic elbow instability were evaluated with use of the Mayo Elbow Performance Ind

BACKGROUND: Recovery of elbow function is a challenging problem following resection arthroplasty after failure of total elbow prosthesis. The objective of this study is to evaluate long term functional outcome in a series of such patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients with twenty elbows who had failed total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) following the use of Baksi total elbow prosthesis needed removal of prosthesis during the period from 1978 to 2003. As two patients were lost to followup, 17 patients with 18 elbows (bilateral in one) were included in this study with a mean age of 44.3

A long-term survey of a large number of children fitted with an electrically powered upper-limb prosthesis seems not to have been reported in the literature. Children with upper-limb deficiencies (congenital or traumatic) were fitted with an electrically powered upper-limb prosthesis in Ontario during the 18-year period of 1965-1983. Seventy-eight patients responded to a questionnaire or were interviewed by telephone. The dropout rate in children with a below-elbow amputation was similar to that reported in below-elbow child amputees wearing a conventional body-powered prosthesis (10% vs. 13%)

Since Speed first treated the radial head fracture with a metal prosthesis in 1941, the purpose of the treatment of radial head fracture with a radial head changed from the prevention of heterotopic ossification to the prevention of proximal migration of the radius and instability of the elbow. The optimal indication is gradually determined as a non-reconstructable radial head fracture with associated injuries that would leave the elbow unstable if the radial head were resected. Types of prosthesis changed from mono-block, bipolar to modular prosthesis. Material of prosthesis changed from acry
