Home visit program for teaching elder abuse evaluations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A home visit program was designed to teach family practice residents how to evaluate patients for elder abuse and capacity (the ability to make one's own decisions). METHODS: Residents assessed potential abuse victims reported to Arizona's Adult Protective Service (APS) in their homes. Written evaluations prepared immediately following each home visit were abstracted for diagnoses (including abuse), recommendations, and patient demographics. Follow-up surveys by APS case workers determined whether the home visit recommendations were accomplished. Graduates of the re

Prevent elder abuse--using a family systems approach.

1. Family stressors occur when the adult child is caregiver for an elderly parent, particularly when care is intensive or protracted. Under certain circumstances of high risk, severe and unresolved strains in intergenerational relationships can develop into elder abuse. 2. Elder abuse is a non-accidental act or omission that causes physical, psychological, or financial harm to an older person. 3. Using a family systems perspective, an original validated instrument is presented that evaluates the risk of elder abuse in the home (REAH). Using this instrument, the nurse can construct two profiles

Elder Abuse in the African Diaspora: A Review.

BACKGROUND: As with many other populations, abuse of older adults is a growing problem across the Africa Diaspora. Modernization and urbanization are eroding the traditional values of respect for older adults. Also, older adults living in environments with limited social and economic resources, and having no means of economic support create a recipe for elder abuse and neglect. METHODS: This article reviews the current literature on the epidemiology, risk factors, and interventions used for elder abuse across the African Diaspora. RESULTS: Reports of elder abuse range from 24.9% to 81.1% acr

Elder Abuse in a Developing Area in Bolivia.

In many parts of the world, elder abuse happens almost unnoticed. Until recently, this serious social problem was hidden from public view and was regarded as an essentially private matter. However, there is growing evidence that elder abuse is an important problem of public health and in the society. The objective of this study is to determine the degree of abuse of elder and vulnerable people in the families and communities of Eastern Bolivia. With this end in mind, we conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study with a sample size of 210 60-year-old people coming from different health care

Definitions of elder abuse in an Italian sample.

The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to analyze definitions of elder abuse in an Italian convenience sample. Fifty-three Italian participants (15 males, 38 females) provided examples of mild, moderate, and extreme mistreatment of older individuals by their adult children. Analyses were conducted to identify frequently mentioned types of abuse and to determine how severe they were judged to be. Also examined was the extent to which gender and age contributed to response patterns. Most examples of extreme elder abuse made reference to physical abuse and neglect, while references

Alcohol and other drug abuse in elders.

With the growing population of older persons, ET nurses can expect an increasing number of elderly clients in their practice settings. Elderly persons are not immune to alcohol and other drug abuse. Detection of substance abuse in this population is complex and often missed. The purposes of this article are as follows: (1) examine barriers that may prevent nurses from addressing substance abuse among the elderly population; (2) suggest risks for psychoactive substance abuse in this population; (3) identify warning signs that should alert nurses to the problem; and (4) outline treatment options

Vulnerable Elder Protection Team: Initial experience of an emergency department-based interdisciplinary elder abuse program.

BACKGROUND: An emergency department (ED) visit provides a unique opportunity to identify elder abuse and initiate intervention, but emergency providers rarely do. To address this, we developed the Vulnerable Elder Protection Team (VEPT), an ED-based interdisciplinary consultation service. We describe our initial experience in the first two years after the program launch. METHODS: We launched VEPT in a large, urban, academic ED/hospital. From 4/3/17 to 4/2/19, we tracked VEPT activations, including patient characteristics, assessment, and interventions. We compared VEPT activations to frequenc

Risk factors associated with elder abuse: the importance of differentiating by type of elder maltreatment.

Elder abuse research rarely differentiates by the type of elder maltreatment involved when identifying risk factors. The purpose of this study was to compare risk factors across four predominant types of elder maltreatment (financial exploitation, physical abuse, neglect by others, and hybrid financial exploitation [HFE]). Data were collected from two sources: interviews with victims of substantiated elder abuse, responding adult protective services (APS) caseworkers (N = 71), and third-party informants; and a statewide database that contained all substantiated cases over a corresponding 2-yea

Predicting Elder Abuse Using a Random Forest Classifier.

This paper aims to identify key factors influencing elder abuse within the family and to further explore the heterogeneity of these factors across different types of elder abuse. The data were drawn from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey and the final valid sample was 10,703. A random forest classifier, a supervised machine learning method, was employed to identify the key influencing factors of elder abuse. Children's economic status is found to be the most important factor in predicting elder abuse, followed by the number of children, the health status of older people, intergenerati

From this large group, 975 (16.4%) participants reported having experienced elder abuse and were included in the sample. Path analysis using Mplus was employed. RESULTS: Elder abuse victimization was significantly associated with depressive symptoms, and thos

Elder abuse and neglect. Council on Scientific Affairs.

Estimates of elder abuse approximate 10% of Americans over 65 years of age; obtaining accurate incidence and prevalence figures is complicated by factors including denial by both the victim and perpetrator and minimization of complaints by health professionals. Broad agreement exists in categorizing elder abuse as physical, psychological, and financial and/or material, despite lack of uniformity in definitions. Systematic scientific investigation provides limited knowledge about the causes of elder abuse. Most experts, however, believe that family problems and conflict are a major precipitatin

Predictors of Physical Abuse in Elder Patients With Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Elder abuse is a public health issue requiring attention. Unlike abuse in the pediatric population, predictors of elder abuse in patients with fracture have not been well defined. METHODS: Elderly patients with physical abuse and fracture were abstracted using the 2007 to 2017 National Emergency Department Sample database. Univariate comparisons, multivariate regression, and adjusted odds ratios were used to determine independent predictors of elder abuse compared with nonabuse fracture controls. RESULTS: Thirteen percent of elder physical abuse patients presenting to the emerg

Elder Abuse: A Comprehensive Overview and Physician-Associated Challenges.

Elder abuse can present in many forms, including physical abuse, psychological/emotional abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, and neglect. Many studies estimate that about 10% of all people over the age of 65 experience some form of abuse. These rates are often higher in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, despite government regulations aimed toward addressing this issue. Because patients who experience abuse tend to have higher rates of hospitalization and mortality, it is important for physicians to be able to accurately identify cases of abuse. However, many studies have found

Elder abuse: what coroners know and need to know.

This article presents findings from a survey examining knowledge of elder abuse among Georgia's coroners. More than half of the 116 respondents indicated that they know "almost nothing" or "a little" about distinguishing signs of physical abuse from signs of aging (54%) and mandatory reporting laws and related elder abuse statutes (63%). When asked the frequency with which older adult cases were referred to the medical examiner, 49% indicated "rarely if ever." Study findings reveal specific opportunities for enhancing training efforts aimed at coroners, who play a critical role in the identifi
