OBJECTIVE: To describe the scope and outcomes of elective pediatric surgical procedures performed during combat operations.
BACKGROUND: The care of patients in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) includes elective humanitarian surgery on Afghan children. Unlike military reports of pediatric trauma care, there is little outcome data on elective pediatric surgical care during combat operations to guide treatment decisions.
METHODS: All elective surgical procedures performed on patients≤16years of age from May 2012 through April 2014 were reviewed. Procedures were grouped by surgical specialty and

INTRODUCTION: Anti-thrombotic drugs (antiplatelets and anticoagulants) are widely used for different clinical reasons. This means that there are an increasing number of patients undergoing elective ophthalmic surgery that are being treated with these drugs. A better knowledge of their implications and their peri-operative use may help to prevent surgical and secondary adverse events. There is often no firm recommendation on how to manage certain drugs in certain surgeries.
OBJECTIVE: To review the recommendations in the scientific literature as regards managing anti-thrombotic agents during t

PURPOSE: There are numerous surgical options for the treatment of mucosal ulcerative colitis.
METHODS: This article reviews the currently available options for the treatment of mucosal ulcerative colitis. Separate discussions will explore both the options in the emergency and elective settings.
RESULTS: Patients with mucosal ulcerative colitis may undergo surgery either as an emergency or in the elective setting. Emergency surgery is usually performed for one of the life-threatening complications of ulcerative colitis: fulminant colitis, toxic megacolon, or massive hemorrhage. The most commo

INTRODUCTION: On 9 December 2019, Whakaari White Island erupted while 47 people were on the island. Thirty-one people were subsequently hospitalized. Fourteen volcanic burn victims were managed at the National Burns Centre at Middlemore Hospital. Between December 2019 and March 2020 these patients required 124 procedures in theatre, using 23 709 operative minutes. Elective surgical lists were cancelled to fulfil this demand for acute operating theatre time and theatre staff.
OBJECTIVES: To quantify the elective surgical resource lost in the aftermath of the Whakaari White Island eruption by s

IMPORTANCE: Hospitals are increasingly experiencing challenges with variable and unpredictable inpatient loads, including days with excessively high and excessively low capacity for surgical patients. Artificial intelligence has the potential to facilitate postoperative hospital bed management and stabilize capacity.
OBJECTIVES: To predict hospital length of stay (LOS) following elective surgical procedures using machine learning methods, and to implement the LOS prediction model in a perioperative clinical setting and evaluate its ability to optimize elective surgical scheduling and hospital

Since the beginning of 2020, the corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic redefined in many ways the practice of cardiology, research and cardiology conferences. Virtual conferences replaced most major in-person venues. The number of "elective" structural heart interventions declined and clinical research endured major setbacks in regards to academic and industry-sponsored clinical trials. In this review, we attempt to provide a broad overview of the field for general and interventional cardiologists with a specific interest in structural heart interventions.

Enhanced perioperative care protocols become the standard of care in elective surgery with a significant improvement in patients' outcome. The key element of the enhanced perioperative care protocol is the multimodal and interdisciplinary approach targeted to the patient, focused on a holistic approach to reduce surgical stress and improve perioperative recovery. Enhanced perioperative care in emergency general surgery is still a debated topic with little evidence available. The present position paper illustrates the existing evidence about perioperative care in emergency surgery patients with

Myopic traction maculopathy is a group of ocular fundus diseases related to high myopia, which can severely impact on patients' visual function. It is well recognized that the abnormal of macular structure and function in the disease are resulted from various traction mechanisms, including the forces from posterior vitreous detachment, posterior vitreous cortex, and macular epiretinal membrane which acting on the inner retina, the force from posterior staphyloma which acting on the outer retina, and retinal intrinsic features such as the changes of inner limiting membrane and arterioles. The primary treatment of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia is medical. Surgery is reserved for unresponsive patients or in case of long lasting, tedious or dangerous side effects of the medication. The surgeon has to inform the patient about risks and benefits of the different surgical methods and consider the patient's expectations and fears in order to choose the best surgical alternative. We describe the clinical picture of trigeminal neuralgia, the steps leading to the diagnosis. We also discuss the pathogenesis and the different treatment modalities with emphasis on surgical methods.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are used more commonly in patients with advanced-stage heart failure. Some of these patients may require elective or urgent abdominal surgical procedures.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the outcomes of the management of LVAD-supported patients who underwent elective and urgent abdominal surgical procedures in our institution.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 93 patients who underwent LVAD implantation between August 2008 and January 2017. All abdominal surgeries in these patients were studied, and their impact on postoperative mor

Physicians and surgeons faced with patients with thoracic aortic disease (TAD) need to determine the underlying diagnosis to facilitate decisions regarding appropriate investigations as well as which other specialists to involve, when to start medical therapy, when to refer for surgery, and how to plan follow-up and family screening. Increased understanding of conditions predisposing to thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) provides the opportunity for more personalized care. However, given advances in the genetics of TAD, clinicians are now faced with an expanded and often confusing list of associat

Assessment of patients undergoing elective surgical procedures on an outpatient basis carries risks that range from mortality through non-lethal injuries to costs incurred for inappropriate testing. Ambulatory surgery accounts for over 60% of elective surgical procedures for most areas of the USA, Canada and Australia and a growing proportion of procedures in Europe and Asia. However, data to determine the true risk of these procedures are difficult to find due to standardized criteria for risk assessment and management. Nonetheless, this type of medical procedure, with appropriate preparation

AIM: To explore and synthesise findings from qualitative studies on adult patients' experiences of day surgery and the processes of recovery.
BACKGROUND: There has been a shift in the practice of elective surgery, from inpatient to ambulatory treatment. Accordingly, more patients are undergoing day surgery and expected to care for themselves at home. To our knowledge, an updated metasynthesis on patients' experiences of day surgery across diverse contexts and continents is lacking.
DESIGN: Meta-ethnography.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL were systematically searched for qualitative res

INTRODUCTION: Injuries are one of the most common reasons for emergency department visits, with approximately 40.2 million injury-related visits occurring in 2011. Facial, hand, and wrist injuries make up a large portion of these visits. Despite the high demand for specialists to attend to these injury-related emergency department visits, recent studies have suggested a discrepancy between elective surgical coverage and trauma care in general. The goal of this study was to determine if there was a difference between access to elective surgical procedures in comparison with on-call emergency ca

BACKGROUND: Retained blood syndrome contributes to higher morbidity and mortality post cardiac surgery. We investigate the benefits of continuous postoperative pericardial flushing (CPPF) over standard care chest drainage in elective adult cardiac surgery patients.
METHODS: Various online databases were screened for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and observations studies comparing CPPF to standard care.
PRIMARY OUTCOMES: 12-hour and total blood loss, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and aortic cross-clamp (ACC) times; surgical re-intervention for bleeding, mortality, sternal wound infection

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this multicenter study was to test the hypothesis of whether the use of a video laryngoscope (VL) reduces complications related to transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) probe insertion.
DESIGN: A multicenter randomized control study.
SETTING: At 5 tertiary care level hospitals.
PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred sixty-three adult patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery.
INTERVENTIONS: The patients were randomized into 2 groups-the conventional group (C group; n = 177) and the VL group (n = 186) for TEE probe insertion.

BACKGROUND: The significant burden of emergency operations in low- and middle-income countries can overwhelm surgical capacity leading to a backlog of elective surgical cases. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the burden of emergency procedures on pediatric surgical capacity in Uganda and to determine health metrics that capture surgical backlog and effective coverage of children's surgical disease in low- and middle-income countries.
METHODS: We reviewed 2 independent and prospectively collected databases on pediatric surgical admissions at Mulago National Referral Hospital
