Developmental and aging changes in brain network switching dynamics revealed by EEG phase synchronization.

Adaptive behavior depends on the brain's capacity to vary its activity across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Yet, how distinct facets of this variability evolve from childhood to older adulthood remains poorly understood, limiting mechanistic models of neurocognitive aging. Here, we characterize lifespan neural variability using an integrated empirical-computational approach. We analyzed high-density EEG cohort data spanning 111 healthy individuals aged 9-75 years, recorded at rest and during a passive and an attended auditory oddball stimulation task. We extracted scale-dependent measu

Cerebellar magnetic stimulation increased beta power and phase synchronisation in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.

OBJECTIVE: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is the most common autosomal dominant ataxia, with no cure currently available. Although repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the cerebellum improves ataxia severity, its efficacy in SCA3 remains suboptimal. This study aimed to investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying cerebellar rTMS in SCA3 using resting-state Electroencephalography (EEG). METHODS: We conducted a sham-controlled study in SCA3 patients, recording resting EEG before and after a 3-week course of cerebellar rTMS or sham treatment. EEG power and f

Neural oscillations modulation during working memory in pre-manifest and early Huntington's disease.

INTRODUCTION: We recently demonstrated specific spectral signatures associated with updating of memory information, working memory (WM) maintenance and readout, with relatively high spatial resolution by means of high-density electroencephalography (hdEEG). WM is impaired already in early symptomatic HD (early-HD) and in pre-manifest HD (pre-HD). The aim of this study was to test whether hdEEG coupled to source localization allows for the identification of neuronal oscillations in specific frequency bands in 16 pre-HD and early-HD during different phases of a WM task. METHODS: We examined mod

NREM Sleep and Antiepileptic Medications Modulate Epileptiform Activity by Altering Cortical Synchrony.

INTRODUCTION: The activating role of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep on epileptic cortex and conversely, the seizure remission brought about by antiepileptic medications, has been attributed to their effects on neuronal synchrony. This study aims to understand the role of neural synchrony of NREM sleep in promoting interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) in patients with epilepsy (PWE) by assessing the peri-IED phase synchrony during awake and sleep states. It also studies the role played by antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on EEG desynchronization in the above cohort. METHODS: A total of 120

Inhibition of Brain Area and Functional Connectivity in Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss With Tinnitus, Based on Resting-State EEG.

This study aimed to identify the mechanism behind idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) in patients with tinnitus by investigating aberrant activity in areas of the brain and functional connectivity. High-density electroencephalography (EEG) was used to investigate central nervous changes in 25 ISSNHL subjects and 27 healthy controls. ISSNHL subjects had significantly reduced activity in the left frontal lobe at the alpha 2 frequency band compared with controls. Linear lagged connectivity and lagged coherence analysis showed significantly reduced functional connectivity between

Phase synchronization alterations of EEG oscillations during emotional video processing in depression and anxiety: a transdiagnostic study.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates overlapping neurobiological variations across transdiagnostic psychiatric disorders. Considering depression and anxiety as the most common and co-occurring symptoms in affective disorders, we hypothesize shared symptom-related electrophysiological aberrations in the neural rhythmic oscillations across diagnostic boundaries. METHODS: 53 treatment-naïve patients with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or depressive episode in bipolar disorder, and 83 healthy controls (HC), underwent 64-channel electroencephalographic (EEG) recording

Are there distinctive EEG Signatures of tinnitus-related emotional distress? Evidence from spectral parameterization and source-level functional connectivity.

Subjective tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of an external acoustic source. This study used resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) to characterize abnormal neural oscillatory activity and electrophysiological features potentially associated with tinnitus-related emotional distress. Resting-state EEG data were collected from patients with tinnitus and healthy controls. Spectral parameterization was applied to separate aperiodic and periodic components and to extract the alpha center frequency. At the same time, source-level phase-locking value (PLV) was calculated to asses

Detecting Phase-Synchrony Connectivity Anomalies in EEG Signals. Application to Dyslexia Diagnosis.

Objective Dyslexia diagnosis is a challenging task, since traditional diagnosis methods are not based on biological markers but on behavioural tests. Although dyslexia diagnosis has been addressed by these tests in clinical practice, it is difficult to extract information about the brain processes involved in the different tasks and, then, to go deeper into its biological basis. Thus, the use of biomarkers can contribute not only to the diagnosis but also to a better understanding of specific learning disorders such as dyslexia. In this work, we use Electroencephalography (EEG) signals to disc

Effects of 24-h acute total sleep deprivation on physiological coupling in healthy young adults.

Sleep deprivation is associated with dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system, adverse cardiovascular events, cognitive and complex motor performance impairment. Less is known about the effects of acute total sleep deprivation (ATSD) on physiological coupling. We aimed to determine the effects of 24-h ATSD on the physiological coupling between complex subsystems by evaluating the cardiorespiratory, cardiovascular and cortico-cardiac interactions. This study enrolled 38 young healthy participants aged 23.2 ± 2.4 years. Multiple synchronous physiological signals including electrocardiograph

Visual deviant stimuli produce mismatch responses in the amplitude dynamics of neuronal oscillations.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory and visual deviant stimuli evoke mismatch negativity (MMN) responses, which can be recorded with electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). However, little is known about the role of neuronal oscillations in encoding of rare stimuli. We aimed at verifying the existence of a mechanism for the detection of deviant visual stimuli on the basis of oscillatory responses, so-called visual mismatch oscillatory response (vMOR). METHODS: Peripheral visual stimuli in an oddball paradigm, standard vs. deviant (7:1), were presented to twenty healthy subjects. The o

Selective Auditory Attention Engages Distinct Neural Strategies in Simulated Electric and Acoustic Stimulation Within and Across Ears.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate whether electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) and bimodal stimulation (BS) rely on similar or distinct neural mechanisms to support attention-driven speech comprehension in noisy environments. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study used electroencephalography to measure cortical multidimensional neural responses and compared them between two groups of young adult normal-hearing listeners (15 subjects per group) exposed to simulated EAS or BS listening conditions in a two-talker competing scene. The simulated stimuli were generated using a vocoder to mimic

Modulation of event-related desynchronization during kinematic and kinetic hand movements.

BACKGROUND: Event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) is a relative power decrease/increase of electroencephalogram (EEG) in a specific frequency band during physical motor execution and mental motor imagery, thus it is widely used for the brain-computer interface (BCI) purpose. However what the ERD really reflects and its frequency band specific role have not been agreed and are under investigation. Understanding the underlying mechanism which causes a significant ERD would be crucial to improve the reliability of the ERD-based BCI. We systematically investigated the relations

Dynamic modulation of epileptic high frequency oscillations by the phase of slower cortical rhythms.

Pathological high frequency oscillations (pHFOs) have been proposed to be robust markers of epileptic cortex. Oscillatory activity below this frequency range has been shown to be modulated by phase of lower frequency oscillations. Here, we tested the hypothesis that dynamic cross-frequency interactions involving pHFOs are concentrated within the epileptogenic cortex. Intracranial electroencephalographic recordings from 17 children with medically-intractable epilepsy secondary to focal cortical dysplasia were obtained. A time-resolved analysis was performed to determine topographic concentratio

Early onset of hypersynchronous network activity and expression of a marker of chronic seizures in the Tg2576 mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Cortical and hippocampal hypersynchrony of neuronal networks seems to be an early event in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. Many mouse models of the disease also present neuronal network hypersynchrony, as evidenced by higher susceptibility to pharmacologically-induced seizures, electroencephalographic seizures accompanied by spontaneous interictal spikes and expression of markers of chronic seizures such as neuropeptide Y ectopic expression in mossy fibers. This network hypersynchrony is thought to contribute to memory deficits, but whether it precedes the onset of memory deficits or not in

Coordinative task difficulty and behavioural errors are associated with increased long-range beta band synchronization.

The neural network and the task-dependence of (local) activity changes involved in bimanual coordination are well documented. However, much less is known about the functional connectivity within this neural network and its modulation according to manipulations of task complexity. Here, we assessed neural activity via high-density electroencephalography, focussing on changes of activity in the beta frequency band (~15-30Hz) across the motor network in 26 young adult participants (19-29 years old). We investigated how network connectivity was modulated with task difficulty and errors of performa

Disruption of gamma-delta relationship related to working memory deficits in first-episode psychosis.

Working memory (WM) deficits constitute a core symptom of schizophrenia. Inadequacy of WM maintenance in schizophrenia has been reported to reflect abnormalities in the excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance between pyramidal neurons and parvalbumin basket cells, which may explain alterations of the dynamics of gamma and delta oscillations. To address this issue, we assessed event-related gamma (35-45 Hz) and delta (0.5-4 Hz) oscillatory responses in a visual n-back WM task in patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and healthy controls (HC). Periodicity analyses of oscillations were computed

Disrupted cortical brain network in post-traumatic stress disorder patients: a resting-state electroencephalographic study.

This study aimed to examine the source-level cortical brain networks of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) based on the graph theory using electroencephalography (EEG). Sixty-six cortical source signals were estimated from 78 PTSD and 58 healthy controls (HCs) of resting-state EEG. Four global indices (strength, clustering coefficient (CC), path length (PL) and efficiency) and one nodal index (CC) were evaluated in six frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha, low beta, high beta and gamma). PTSD showed decreased global strength, CC and efficiency, in delta, theta, and low beta band and enhance
