Adverse Experience Reports of Seizures in Youth and Young Adult Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems Users.

PURPOSE: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use poses significant and avoidable health risks to young people. Until recently, seizures were most often associated with cases of liquid nicotine ingestion. METHODS: We examined 122 voluntary reports of seizures (n = 114) and neurological symptoms (syncope, n = 7; and tremor, n = 1) in 123 ENDS users (one report contained information on two users) received by the Food and Drug Administration between December 1, 2010, and June 30, 2019. RESULTS: The median age (interquartile range) of users was 20 years (17-27); 67% of reports were in you

Dose by design: How limits on nicotine flux and puff duration affect the abuse liability of electronic nicotine delivery systems.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) product standards for nicotine flux (nicotine emitted/second), combined with limiting puff duration, could control nicotine dose and support ENDS regulations. We assessed behavioral and subjective abuse liability indices for ENDS varying in nicotine flux with fixed puff duration among people who smoke. METHODS: This within-subjects study included 32 adults who smoked cigarettes. Own-brand cigarettes (OB) and four unflavored ENDS were evaluated: no-flux (0μg/s), low-flux (36.01μg/s), cigarette-like-flux (90.03μg/s), and high-flux (180.06

Dental plaque quantitation by light induced fluorescence technology in exclusive Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) users.

OBJECTIVES: In comparison to conventional combustible cigarettes, Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) including both e-cigarettes (ECs) and heated tobacco products (HTPs) significantly reduce exposure to toxic chemical emissions. However, their impact on dental plaque remains unclear. This study measures dental plaque in ENDS (ECs and HTPs) users using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology, comparing them with current, former, and never smokers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study compared dental plaque measurements using QLF technology (Q-ray cam™ Pro) among curren

Electronic nicotine delivery systems exhibit reduced bronchial epithelial cells toxicity compared to cigarette: the Replica Project.

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) may reduce health risks associated with chronic exposure to smoke and their potential benefits have been the matter of intense scientific debate. We aimed to replicate three published studies on cytotoxic and inflammatory effects of cigarette smoke and ENDS aerosol in an independent multi-center ring study. We aimed to establish the reliability of results and the robustness of conclusions by replicating the authors' experimental protocols and further validating them with different techniques. Human bronchial epithelial cells (NCI-H292) were exposed t

Motives and perceptions regarding electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use among adults with mental health conditions.

BACKGROUND: Smoking rates are disproportionately high among adults with mental health conditions (MHC), and recent research suggests that among former smokers, those with MHC are more likely to use electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). This study investigated reasons for ENDS use and related risk perceptions among individuals with versus without MHC. METHODS: Among adult current ENDS users (n=550), associations between self-reported MHC diagnoses and motives for ENDS use and ENDS risk perceptions were examined, stratified by smoking status. RESULTS: There were no significant associati

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) Use and Pregnancy II: Perinatal Outcomes Following ENDS Use During Pregnancy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes following electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use during pregnancy, and considers whether there are sufficient data to support ENDS as a harm reduction approach during pregnancy. RECENT FINDINGS: Seven papers assessed perinatal outcomes following ENDS use during pregnancy. There was evidence that ENDS use was associated with increased risk for some adverse perinatal outcomes (e.g., small for gestational age). However, the repeated use of data sets, insufficient data (e.g., timing of ENDS use, type of ENDS pr

The Impact of Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) Flavors on Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors and Nicotine Addiction-Related Behaviors.

Over the past two decades, combustible cigarette smoking has slowly declined by nearly 11% in America; however, the use of electronic cigarettes has increased tremendously, including among adolescents. While nicotine is the main addictive component of tobacco products and a primary concern in electronic cigarettes, this is not the only constituent of concern. There is a growing market of flavored products and a growing use of zero-nicotine e-liquids among electronic cigarette users. Accordingly, there are few studies that examine the impact of flavors on health and behavior. Menthol has been s

Bupropion/zonisamide combination to assist smokers to switch from combustible cigarettes to electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).

INTRODUCTION: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) may offer a much less harmful alternative to combustible cigarettes (CC) for adult smokers unwilling or unable to relinquish nicotine. However, dual use of CC and ENDS undermines potential harm reduction, and progress needs to be made to assist smokers to switch to ENDS. This study explored the promise of a novel treatment combination of the smoking cessation medication bupropion and an FDA-approved anti-seizure medication, zonisamide, to facilitate switching from CC to ENDS. Both medications have been found to reduce craving for CC and

Toxicological analysis of aerosols derived from three electronic nicotine delivery systems using normal human bronchial epithelial cells.

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are a rapidly growing global market advertised as a safer alternative to combustible cigarettes. However, comprehensive investigations of END aerosol physicochemical and toxicological properties have not been fully explored across brands to assess relative safety. In this study, we evaluated aerosols collected from three ENDS - Juul Fruit Medley (5% nicotine), Logic Power (2.4% nicotine), and Mistic (1.8% nicotine). ENDS aerosols were generated using standard machine puffing regimen and collected with a novel fluoropolymer condensation trap. Triple q

Effects of nicotine and THC vapor inhalation administered by an electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) in male rats.

BACKGROUND: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS, e-cigarettes) are increasingly used for the self-administration of nicotine by various human populations, including previously nonsmoking adolescents. Studies in preclinical models are necessary to evaluate health impacts of ENDS including the development of nicotine addiction, effects of ENDS vehicles, flavorants and co-administered psychoactive substances such as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This study was conducted to validate a rat model useful for the study of nicotine effects delivered by inhalation of vapor created by ENDS. METH
