Electronic waste (E-waste), the fastest-growing solid waste stream, is projected to reach 82 million metric tons globally by 2030. E-waste plastics are difficult to sort due to diverse polymer compositions and the widespread use of pigments and other additives, which introduce complexity and/or strong fluorescence interference for spectroscopic based methods, especially for Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy coupled with machine learning (ML) has been explored for plastic identification, but its performance and applicability remain limited by the strong fluorescent backgrounds and reliance

OBJECTIVES: In Germany, the initial step of electronic waste (e-waste) recycling frequently takes place in sheltered workshops for physically and mentally handicapped workers (Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen (WfbM), in german language). E-waste recycling involves a potential risk of exposure to toxic metals. Therefore, we assessed the occupational exposure of recycling workers to toxic metals to identify potential health risks and insufficient protective measures.
METHODS: We used a combined air- and bio-monitoring approach to determine exposure of recycling workers to toxic metals. Air a

The concentrations of 41 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the river sediments from Luqiao were analyzed by GC-NCI-MS. The objectives of this study were to understand the contents, spatial distribution and sources. The Sigma40 PBDEs (excluding BDE209) concentrations in sediments sampled were in the range of 0.177 to 161 ng x g(-1), with a mean of 22.5 ng x g(-1), and the concentrations of BDE209 were from 0.36 to 958 ng x g(-1), with a mean of 148 ng x g(-1). Deca-BDE was the most predominant in 9 PBDE homologues in most of samples, accounting for 38.4%-96.0%, with an average of 74.4%

BACKGROUND: The global consumption of electronic and electrical products has increased the generation of electronic waste (e-waste), which poses environmental and public health concerns. In Vietnam, informal e-waste processing, characterized by unregulated collection and dismantling, is widespread and exposes workers to hazardous substances. However, data on the health status of e-waste workers remain limited, and exposure to phthalates, which are endocrine-disrupting chemicals widely used in electronics, has not yet been evaluated.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the health status of e-

Informal-level electronic waste (e-waste)-processing activities are performed at hotspots in developing countries such as India, China, and Ghana. These activities increase the ambient burden of heavy metals and contribute to the toxic exposure of the general population. However, few data exist on the internal exposure of populations involved in these informal activities and in close contact with fumes from the direct combustion of electronic waste products in these countries. Therefore, in a cross-sectional study design, we analyzed blood, urine, and hair samples from 75 e-waste workers resid

This study investigates the environmental persistence and human exposure risks of Dechlorane Plus (DP) in remediated, abandoned electronic waste dismantling areas in Taizhou City, China. Based on comprehensive sampling, DP concentrations, isomer profiles, and multi-pathway exposure routes were evaluated in air (median: 26.2 pg/m3), soil (median: 12.3 ng/g dry weight), indoor dust (median: 19.4 ng/g dw), and food (median: 36.9 pg/g dw). Results revealed anti-DP as the dominant isomer across all matrices (air fanti = 0.80; soil fanti = 0.92; dust fanti = 0.89; food fanti = 0.71; serum fanti = 0.

Electronic waste has become one of the fastest growing waste problems in the world. It contains both toxic metals and toxic organics. The aim of this study was to (1) investigate to what extent toxicants can leach from different electronic products, components, and materials into water and (2) identify which group of toxicants (metals or hydrophobic organics) that is causing toxicity. Components from five discarded electronic products (cell phone, computer, phone modem, keyboard, and computer mouse) were leached in deionised water for 3 days at 23°C in concentrations of 25 g/l for metal compon

The osmotic microbial fuel cell (OsMFC) is a novel technology that can achieve electricity generation and water recovery while stabilizing and dewatering waste activated sludge (WAS). By examining electricity generation, WAS stabilization, microbial community shifts, meta-transcriptomic changes, and the enhancement mechanism of electron transfer, this study demonstrated significant advantages of an OsMFC in treating WAS over a conventional microbial fuel cell (MFC). Compared with typical MFCs, the OsMFC performed better in terms of maximum power density (260 mW·m⁻2), removal of total chemical

Supercritical water (SCW) technology can be applied as an efficient and environment-friendly method to recover toxic or complex chemical wastes. Separation and chemical reactions under supercritical conditions may be realized by changing the temperature, pressure, and other operating parameters to adjust the physical and chemical properties of water. However, salt deposition and corrosion are often encountered during the treatment of inorganic substances, which will hinder the commercial applications of SCW technology. The solubility of salt in high pressure/temperature water forms the theoret

Samples of groundwater, river water, river sediment, paddy soil, rice seeds, hen eggs, fish, umbilical cord blood, and newborn meconium were collected from October 2002 to October 2003 near a large site in China used for the disassembly of obsolete transformers and other electronic or electrical waste. Six indicator PCB congeners, three non-ortho dioxin-like PCB congeners, and six organochlorine pesticides were determined in the samples by GC with electron capture detector. The results demonstrated that the local environment and edible foods had been seriously polluted by toxic PCBs and organo

Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) have received tremendous attention due to their high toxicity. To identify the emission pattern of Cl/Br-PAHs from various industrial productions, understand the formation mechanisms and the influence on the surroundings, this study investigated the surface soils of three typical industrial parks. Generally, traces of Cl-PAHs were much lower than Br-PAHs. The mean Cl-PAH concentrations followed the trend of petrochemical industrial park (3.12 ng/g), brominated flame retardant (BFR) manufacturing park (1.48 ng/g), and electronic waste di

The rapidly expanding soft electronics market has raised critical sustainability concerns. Most petrochemical-based polymers used in soft electronics incur considerable CO2 emissions during their production, and the complex architecture of these devices further hinders recycling. To address these challenges, the development of bio-based and efficiently recyclable materials is essential for reducing the carbon footprint and enabling closed-loop recovery. This study proposes a sustainable design strategy for scalable chemical recycling via a one-pot separation process. Bio-based materials, inclu

Photoreduction of metal ions plays a central role in the recovery of precious metals from electronic waste, yet its design is still largely governed by a semiconductor paradigm that links extended π-conjugation and long-range charge transport to superior performance. Herein, we challenge this assumption by demonstrating that deliberate disruption of π-continuity via σ-linkers in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) affords a more effective electronic architecture for localized redox reactions. The resulting π-disrupted framework (σ-COF) generates low-energy, spatially confined electronic states

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is defined as "urban mines" due to the various recoverable minerals they contain. However, current WEEE classification methods are mostly limited to their physical characteristics, focusing on collection, transport, and treatment purposes rather than on valorization. In the present study, our aim is to propose an alternative classification approach adapted for low-income countries for WEEE recovery that highlights their content of precious and valuable metals. A typology of WEEE was created based on WEEE generated in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).

Most existing ergonomic assessment tools are intended for routine work. Time- and cost-efficient observational tools for ergonomic assessment of unregulated work are lacking. This paper presents the development of an observation-based tool designed to investigate ergonomic exposures among informal electronic waste workers that could be applied to other unregulated jobs/tasks. Real time coding of observation is used to estimate the relative duration, intensity, and frequency of exposure to key work postures, forceful exertions, movements, contact stress and vibration. Time spent in manual mater

Recently, the severe side effects related to the widespread consumption of antidepressants (ADs) have alarmingly created a global challenge for clinics and forensic laboratories. This study introduces a machine learning-empowered multicolor fluorescent sensor array for the rapid and sensitive spectral and visual quantification and discrimination of six common ADs under green chemistry principles. Blue carbon dots (B-CDs) was synthesized by an environmentally friendly method using sweet lemon waste to directly reduce Ag+ to Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) without any reducing agent, and form core-shel

The reducing capacity (RC) and microbially mediated electron-transfer capacity (ETC) of compost-derived fulvic acid (FA) are closely related to its molecular structure and may influence Fe biogeochemical cycling. However, how these redox functions evolve with FA structure during composting remains poorly understood. Using Fe(III) as a prevalent environmental electron acceptor, this study innovatively quantified the reducing capacity(RC) and microbially mediated electron-transfer capacity(ETC) of FA throughout a full-scale municipal solid waste (MSW) composting process and linked these function

We report here on the ultrastructure of amyloid plaques in chronic wasting disease (CWD) transmitted to Tg20 transgenic mice overexpressing prion protein (PrPc). We identified three main types of amyloid deposits in mCWD: large amyloid deposits, unicentric plaques similar to kuru plaques in human prion diseases and multicentric plaques reminiscent of plaques typical of GSS. The most unique type of plaques were large subpial amyloid deposits. They were composed of large areas of amyloid fibrils but did not form "star-like" appearances of unicentric plaques. All types of plaques were totally dev
