The Usher syndrome type 2A: clinical findings in obligate carriers.

Ten obligate carriers of Usher syndrome type 2A from 5 different families with 2 affected persons all underwent audiologic, vestibular and ophthalmologic examinations. They had a sensorineural hearing loss which was in excess of that expected for their age at all of the frequencies (0.25-8 kHz) tested, however, only a 10 dB (average) excess in hearing loss at 0.25-0.5 kHz proved to be significant. The speech discrimination scores obtained conformed with the hearing thresholds. Tympanometry, acoustic reflex and brain stem auditory-evoked potential findings were generally normal. Some vestibular

An eye movement disorder in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Defective pursuit eye movements were recorded by electrooculography (EOG) in 11 of 18 patients (61%) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Pursuit defects consisted of a breakdown of smooth tracking into saccadic motions that were grossly in excess (frequencies and amplitudes) of saccadic interruptions of pursuit in normal subjects. In nine patients, defective pursuits cogwheeling) were obvious by visual inspection as well as by EOG; in two, this abnormality was seen only by EOG. In eight patients, the pursuit defect was the only abnormality of oculomotor function; in three, there were also sacc

Eye movements in ataxia-telangiectasia.

The spectrum of eye movement disorders in six patients with ataxia-telangiectasia at different stages of progression was assessed quantitatively by electrooculography. All patients demonstrated abnormalities of voluntary and involuntary saccades. The youngest and least involved patient had significantly increased reaction times of voluntary saccades, but normal accuracy and velocity. The other patients demonstrated increased reaction times and marked hypometria of horizontal and vertical voluntary saccades. Saccade velocity remained normal. Vestibular and optokinetic fast components (involunta

Primary biliary cirrhosis, dark adaptometry, electro-oculography, and vitamin A state.

Twenty five patients with primary biliary cirrhosis were studied for vitamin A state. In nine patients found to have low circulating vitamin A concentrations no abnormality was found on electro-oculography or in dark adaptation. A positive correlation was found between retinol binding protein and vitamin A values (r = +0.88; p less than 0.001) and between serum albumin and vitamin A values (r = +0.75; p less than 0.001). A weaker and negative correlation was found between serum bilirubin (r = -0.47; p less than 0.05) and vitamin A values. Patients with primary biliary cirrhosis should not rece

[Electrophysiological recording of nocturnal sleep and the multiple sleep latency test in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome].

Polysomnographic studies were performed in 6 patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSA). The sleep study consisted of: electroencephalography, electromyography, electrooculography, electrocardiography, pulse oximetry and observation of respiration. During day multiple sleep latency tests were performed. In all patients fragmentation of sleep with prevalent stages 1. and 2. of NREM and occasionally deep sleep and REM phase were observed. Concomitantly with the appearance of electrophysiologic sleep stages the muscle tone decreased and episodes of obstructive apnoea occurred. The peri

Analysis of electro-oculographic artifact during vertical saccadic eye movements.

The analysis of vertical saccades by electrooculography (EOG) is limited by the presence of waveform artifacts that occur with both upward and downward saccades. The artifacts have been shown to increase the calculated velocities of upward saccades. For better evaluation of the nature of these artifacts, voluntary vertical saccades were recorded by EOG and magnetic search coil in five normal subjects and by EOG only in two patients who had previously undergone enucleation. All subjects demonstrated peaked EOG artifacts during vertical saccades. The amplitude of these artifacts was decreased bu

Hybrid Brain/Neural Exoskeleton Enables Bimanual ADL Training in Routine Stroke Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Severe upper limb motor impairment is one of the most disabling consequences of stroke. Although brain-controlled rehabilitation technologies, such as brain/neural exoskeletons (B/NE), have been shown to be effective in promoting motor recovery, their clinical adoption remains limited because of insufficient integration of B/NE into existing clinical workflows. Here, we introduce and validate a fully portable B/NE system that overcomes this limitation by relying on brain (electroencephalography) and ocular (electrooculography) signals to restore bimanual activities of daily living

[Vigilance and beta blockade. The influence of the beta blocker atenolol and other substances on the reaction time of the visual system].

Visual reaction times as a measure of vigilance and of the psycho-physiological condition of subjects was determined after combined physical and mental stress to examine beta-blocker influence. Using the technique of electrooculography 40 subjects aged 25,7 +/- 6 with a mean blood pressure to 126/79 mmHg were measured in a double-blind cross-over design after application of placebo or 50 mg of atenolol (Tenormin) for 3 days. Visual reaction time was defined as the time between display of a peripheral light signal and the start of the eye movement that shifts the direction of gaze from the refe

Isolated cranial nerve palsies due to brainstem lesions.

Isolated cranial nerve palsies are often attributed to lesions of the respective nerves along their extraaxial courses. There are a significant number of reports of individual patients with cranial nerve palsies, mostly of the 3rd and 6th nerves, as the sole manifestation of brainstem lesions proven by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computer-assisted tomography (CT). An intraaxial basis may still be underestimated if based on MRI only, as electrophysiological abnormalities indicating brainstem lesions (masseter reflex, blink reflex, DC electrooculography) may be independent from MRI-docum

Atypical vertical retraction syndrome: a case study.

A case of unilateral retraction of the eyeball in downward gaze as well as downshoot with the retraction when an outward horizontal movement of the contralateral eye was attempted has been introduced. The case has an exotropia with inability to adduct involved eye. The face turned to the left to minimize diplopia in the primary position. During the retraction, the lid widened slightly. An analyses by electrooculography and electromyography suggested that there was an abnormal neural connection between the vertical recti of the involved eye and the contralateral lateral rectus muscle. The challenge of measuring physiological parameters during motor imagery engagement in patients after a stroke.

INTRODUCTION: It is suggested that eye movement recordings could be used as an objective evaluation method of motor imagery (MI) engagement. Our investigation aimed to evaluate MI engagement in patients after stroke (PaS) compared with physical execution (PE) of a clinically relevant unilateral upper limb movement task of the patients' affected body side. METHODS: In total, 21 PaS fulfilled the MI ability evaluation [Kinaesthetic and Visual Imagery Questionnaire (KVIQ-10), body rotation task (BRT), and mental chronometry task (MC)]. During the experiment, PaS moved a cup to distinct fields wh

[Electroretinogram and electrooculogram in retinal degeneration].

Electroretinogram (ERG) and electrooculogram (EOG) are fundamental for proper early diagnosis of retinal dystrophies and degenerations. The most characteristic changes of ERG and EOG in such retinal dystrophies as Stargardt's disease, Best's disease, fundus flavimaculatus, fundus albipunctatus, retinitis pigmentosa, choroideremia, iuvenile retinoschisis, congenital stationary night blindness, progressive cone dystrophy and in some of retinal degenerations for differential diagnosis were described. Electrophysiological state of retina in retinal dystrophy depends on patient's age and pattern of

[Congenital oculomotor apraxia. 2 cases with an electro-oculography study].

Congenital oculomotor apraxia is characterized by the inability of the young child to produce horizontal saccades when his head is fixed; two cases are reported. In a free condition this trouble is compensated by thrust head movements allowing the child to lead his gaze to the stimulus or to reach it by successive hypometric jerks released by movement. A blink usually precedes the eye movement probably allowing the child to escape from an excessive fixation. This apraxia is combined with a motor and psychological development delay. The evolution of all the troubles is usually good with minimal

Saccadic velocity measurements in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Five patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia had horizontal saccades measured by electro-oculography. In all patients, abduction saccadic velocities were normal while adduction saccades were slowed either binocularly or monocularly. In one patient, adduction saccades were reduced in velocity, even though full adduction was present. Saccadic velocity measurements may be helpful in diagnosing internuclear ophthalmoplegia, especially in the early or subclinical case. As bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia frequently suggests multiple sclerosis, prolonged examination with more sophisticated

Electrophysiological brainstem investigations in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

Phasic inspiratory genioglossus activity prevents pharyngeal airway collapse in healthy subjects during sleep and is diminished or absent in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), thus leading to pharyngeal obstruction. Case reports of OSAS after pontomedullary lesions indicate that impaired inspiratory genioglossal activity may result from brainstem lesions. We therefore investigated brainstem functions in 18 awake patients with OSAS using brainstem auditory evoked potentials, blink reflex, masseter reflex, masseter inhibitory reflex (in 11 of 18 patients), magnetic evoked potentials of th

A Stretchable and Transparent Electrode for Visual Electrophysiological Acquisition.

Visual impairments pose a significant global health challenge, and visual electrophysiological (EP) acquisition plays a pivotal role in diagnosing ophthalmic diseases. However, traditional electrodes still encounter limitations such as inadequate mechanical adaptability and reusability. This study proposes a stretchable and transparent electrode (STE) consisting of a conductive paste/indium tin oxide layer on a polymethyl methacrylate substrate. Leveraging an island-bridge design, the STE renders reliable performance even after being subjected to 1000 cycles of 25% lateral strain and 18% diago

Electrophysiological brain stem investigations in idiopathic narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is associated with various rapid eye movement (REM) sleep abnormalities. Distinct brain stem areas seem to play a prominent role in REM sleep regulation. Recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have led to conflicting findings concerning the presence of structural brain stem lesions in patients with idiopathic narcoleptic syndrome. However, multimodal electrophysiological brain stem investigations may reveal functional brain stem abnormalities even in the absence of MRI abnormality. Therefore we investigated brain stem function in 12 idiopathic narcoleptic patients by system

Human-Machine Interface: Multiclass Classification by Machine Learning on 1D EOG Signals for the Control of an Omnidirectional Robot.

People with severe disabilities require assistance to perform their routine activities; a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) will allow them to activate devices that respond according to their needs. In this work, an HMI based on electrooculography (EOG) is presented, the instrumentation is placed on portable glasses that have the task of acquiring both horizontal and vertical EOG signals. The registration of each eye movement is identified by a class and categorized using the one hot encoding technique to test precision and sensitivity of different machine learning classification algorithms capabl

An electrooculographic study of internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

The eye movements of 25 patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia were recorded by electrooculography. The velocity of adducting saccades was markedly less than normal. The velocity of abducting saccades was within the normal range, but statistically there was a wider distribution. Recordings were made in 2 patients several months after the onset of internuclear ophthalmoplegia, at which time the adducting eye velocity was greater than the abducting eye velocity. A patient with a unilateral medial fasciculus lesion showed marked overshoot of the abducting eye on contralateral saccades and ove
