[Embryonal development of the brain of the shark Scyliorhinus canicula (L.). I. Formation of the shape of the brain, the migration mode and phase and the structure of the diencephalon].

Brain structure of the shark Scyliorhinus canicula has been studied on the basis of a series of embryonic stages. The incubation time was 157 days in average (under constant conditions of 15 centigrades and density of 1.026). 1. The first predominant characters of the external brain shape are the optic tectum, cerebellum, telencephali hemispheres and oculomotor root. In addition, the brain axis is characterized by new flexures in the cerebellar and prosencephalic level. A nuchal flexure in absent. 2. The ontogenetic pattern of the matrix layer differs in different brain parts. Generally, ventr

Dual Disruption of Embryonic Angiogenesis by Hyperglycemia: Structural and Hemodynamic Alterations Revealed via OCT Angiography and Biospeckle Imaging in the Chick CAM Model.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effects of hyperglycemia on vascular morphology and hemodynamics during embryogenesis using the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model. METHODS: We employed a dual-modality, label-free imaging approach, Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) and biospeckle imaging, to evaluate microvascular architecture and real-time flow dynamics in chick embryos subjected to hyperglycemic conditions. Quantitative metrics such as vessel area, branching junctions, lacunarity, and biospeckle contrast were analyzed to assess angiogenic and metabolic responses.

Structure of the right testis of sexually mature genetically female fowl experimentally masculinized during embryonic life and submitted to a posthatching left castration.

Posthatching left castration of genetically female fowl, Gallus domesticus, preceded, during embryonic life, by a masculinizing treatment associating a testis graft and an antiestrogen resulted in the development of the right rudimentary gonad into a testis. Examined after the sexual maturity, the right testis of most treated animals was entirely composed of seminiferous tubules possessing a spermatogenic cell complement. Spermiogenesis proceeded to the stage of spermatozoon in 4 out of 17 treated animals and was almost as well organized as in a normal cock testis in 3 of them. Testis developm

Exploring the Structural and Functional Diversity among FGF Signals: A Comparative Study of Human, Mouse, and Xenopus FGF Ligands in Embryonic Development and Cancer Pathogenesis.

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) encode a large family of growth factor proteins that activate several intracellular signaling pathways to control diverse physiological functions. The human genome encodes 22 FGFs that share a high sequence and structural homology with those of other vertebrates. FGFs orchestrate diverse biological functions by regulating cellular differentiation, proliferation, and migration. Dysregulated FGF signaling may contribute to several pathological conditions, including cancer. Notably, FGFs exhibit wide functional diversity among different vertebrates spatiotemporall

Alzheimer's disease-like pathology-triggered oxidative stress, alterations in monoamines levels, and structural damage of locus coeruleus neurons are partially recovered by a mix of proteoglycans of embryonic genesis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis includes oxidative damage and perturbations of monoamines. However, as many details of these alterations are not known, we have investigated the changes in monoamine levels as well as the free radical oxidation processes (FRO) in the brainstem of rats that were administered i.c.v. Aβ (25-35) (rat model of AD-like pathology). The level of oxidative stress was found elevated in the brainstem along with the increased concentrations of monoamines, especially norepinephrine in the locus coeruleus (LC) area of the brainstem. This was accompanied by the substanti

Classification of tubal gestations by transvaginal sonography.

Transvaginal sonographic images of tubal pregnancies were correlated with the surgical findings in 191 patients having this condition. The sonographic appearance of the ectopic gestations was classified by the absence or presence of structures such as a 'tubal ring' containing the yolk sac, embryonic structures, heart activity, a sonolucent or irregularly echogenic gestational sac, dilated Fallopian tube with amorphous content, fluid in the pelvis and an empty uterus. The following classifications were made: Type Ia (n = 43) A well-defined 'tubal ring' and a beating heart with or without discr

Quantitative Neuroanatomical Phenotyping of the Embryonic Mouse Brain.

Congenital neurodevelopmental anomalies are present from birth and are characterized by an abnormal development of one or more structures of the brain. Brain structural anomalies are highly comorbid with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders such as intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, and schizophrenia, and 80% are of genetic origin. We aim to address an important neurobiological question: How many genes regulate the normal anatomy of the brain during development. To do so, we developed a quantitative approach for the assessment of a total of 106 neuroanat

Bsx, an evolutionary conserved Brain Specific homeoboX gene expressed in the septum, epiphysis, mammillary bodies and arcuate nucleus.

Shaping and orchestrating the genetic program involved in embryonic modelling of brain structures is a major function played by homeobox containing genes. Recently, analysis of conditional mouse mutants has pointed out additional roles in supporting adult brain functional activities. During a search for novel homeobox genes in the public released genomic sequences derived by the Human and Mouse genome projects, we were able to identify the mouse homologue of the Drosophila brain specific homeobox gene. We named it Bsx and characterized its expression in embryonic and post-natal mouse brain. In

Murine fibroblast growth factor receptor 1alpha isoforms mediate node regression and are essential for posterior mesoderm development.

Alternative splicing in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (Fgfr1) locus generates a variety of splicing isoforms, including FGFR1alpha isoforms, which contain three immunoglobulin-like loops in the extracellular domain of the receptor. It has been previously shown that embryos carrying targeted disruptions of all major isoforms die during gastrulation, displaying severe growth retardation and defective mesodermal structures. Here we selectively disrupted the FGFR1alpha isoforms and found that they play an essential role in posterior mesoderm formation during gastrulation. We show that th

Metabolism of retinol during mammalian placental and embryonic development.

Retinol (vitamin A) is a fat-soluble nutrient indispensable for a harmonious mammalian gestation. The absence or excess of retinol and its active derivatives [i.e., the retinoic acids (RAs)] can lead to abnormal development of embryonic and extraembryonic (placental) structures. The embryo is unable to synthesize the retinol and is strongly dependent on the maternal delivery of retinol itself or precursors: retinyl esters or carotenoids. Before reaching the embryonic tissue, the retinol or the precursors have to pass through the placental structures. During this placental step, a simple diffus

Embryology of congenital ventriculo-coronary communications: a study on quail-chick chimeras.

Ventriculo-coronary arterial communications are rare congenital heart defects which have been explained traditionally on the basis of abnormal persistence of such communications found in the normal developing heart. Recent studies, however, have suggested that these embryonic communications might be an incidental finding rather than a normal feature. Thus, it has been suggested that congenital ventriculo-coronary communications do not represent remnants of normal embryonic vessels, but rather represent acquired lesions. In the present study, hearts were constructed in embryonic chicks in which

Computerized three-dimensional analysis of the heart and great vessels in normal and holoprosencephalic human embryos.

The developing heart and great vessels undergo drastic morphogenetic changes during the embryonic period. To analyze the normal and abnormal development of these organs, it is essential to visualize their structures in three and four dimensions, including the changes occurring with time. We have reconstructed the luminal structure of the hearts and great vessels of staged human embryos from serial histological sections to demonstrate their sequential morphological changes in three dimensions. The detailed structures of the embryonic heart and major arteries in normal and holoprosencephalic (HP

TRAPPC2l Participates in Male Germ Cell Development by Regulating Cell Division.

TRAPPC2L is a core subunit of the Transport Protein Particle (TRAPP) complex, which is involved in vesicle transport and autophagy. Mutations in Trappc2l gene are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, characterised by severe neurodevelopmental delays and varying degrees of muscle abnormalities. In this study, we found that the knockout of Trappc2l did not cause developmental abnormalities in both male and female mice. However, the male mice were completely infertile. Histological examination revealed that germ cell syncytial structures with multiple nuclear were formed in Trappc2l knoc

Extra-embryonic mesoderm during development and in in vitro models.

Extra-embryonic tissues provide protection and nutrition in vertebrates, as well as a connection to the maternal tissues in mammals. The extra-embryonic mesoderm is an essential and understudied germ layer present in amniotes. It is involved in hematopoiesis, as well as in the formation of extra-embryonic structures such as the amnion, umbilical cord and placenta. The origin and specification of extra-embryonic mesoderm are not entirely conserved across species, and the molecular mechanisms governing its formation and function are not fully understood. This Review begins with an overview of th

Virtual reality imaging techniques in the study of embryonic and early placental health.

Embryonic and placental growth and development in the first trimester of pregnancy have impact on the health of the fetus, newborn, child and even the adult. This emphasizes the importance of this often neglected period in life. The development of three-dimensional transvaginal ultrasonography in combination with virtual reality (VR) opens the possibility of accurate and reliable visualization of embryonic and placental structures with real depth perception. These techniques enable new biometry and volumetry measurements that contribute to the knowledge of the (patho)physiology of embryonic an

Research progress on the effect of sperm chromatin integrity on function and its detection methods.

Sperm chromatin not only carries genetic information such as paternal DNA, but also carries structural proteins, epigenetic information, and higher-order chromatin structures (such as matrix attachment regions and telomeres), etc. These information play an important role in embryonic development. This article mainly reviews the effects of these different information carried by sperm chromatin on sperm function and embryonic development and the research progress of related detection methods, in order to provide a theoretical basis and scientific diagnosis and treatment strategies for the etiolo

Parabronchial remodeling in chicks in response to embryonic hypoxia.

The embryonic development of parabronchi occurs mainly during the second half of incubation in precocious birds, which makes this phase sensitive to possible morphological modifications induced by O2 supply limitation. Thus, we hypothesized that hypoxia during the embryonic phase of parabronchial development induces morphological changes that remain after hatching. To test this hypothesis, chicken embryos were incubated entirely (21 days) under normoxia or partially under hypoxia (15% O2 during days 12 to 18). Lung structures, including air capillaries, blood capillaries, infundibula, atria, p

SEM-dissection of a human embryo derived from an ectopic pregnancy.

A 6.5-week-old human embryo with an approximate crown-rump length of 13.2 mm was obtained from a tubal pregnancy. Two hours before surgical removal, the embryo was imaged with real time ultrasound and was noted to have rhythmic cardiac motion. Subsequent to surgical removal, the embryo was dissected free from the placenta and prepared for routine scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies. Progressive stages of dissection with microsurgical instruments followed by SEM photography elucidated the three-dimensional aspects of embryonic development of many structures, including the lens placode,
