Incidence of Emergence Delirium in the Pediatric PACU: Prospective Observational Trial.

Emergence delirium (ED) is a postoperative complication in pediatric anesthesia characterized by perception and psychomotor disorder and has a negative impact on morbidity in the form of maladaptive behavior, which can last weeks after anesthesia. Patients with developed ED present with psychomotor anxiety, agitation, and are at higher risk of unintentional extraction of an intravenous cannula, self-harm and nausea and vomiting. The described incidence of ED varies between 25−80%, with a higher prevalence among children younger than 6 years of age. We aimed to determine the incidence of ED in

EEG-Parameter-Guided Anesthesia for Prevention of Emergence Delirium in Children.

Background: Emergence delirium (ED) usually occurs in children after surgery with an incidence of 10−80%. Though ED is mostly self-limited, its potential injuries cannot be ignored. Whether electroencephalography (EEG)-parameter-guided anesthesia could reduce the incidence of ED in pediatric surgery has not been fully discussed to date. Methods: Fifty-four boys aged 2−12 years undergoing elective hypospadias surgery under sevoflurane anesthesia were selected. In the EEG-parameter-guided group (E group), sevoflurane was used for anesthesia induction and was maintained by titrating the spectral

The delirium dichotomy of remimazolam: a differential risk profile for emergence delirium versus postoperative delirium in surgical patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The association between remimazolam, a novel ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine, and the risk of postoperative delirium (POD) and emergence delirium (ED) remains controversial, particularly following prolonged infusion. METHODS: PUBMED, EMBASE, WEB OF SCIENCE and the Cochrane Library electronic databases were searched up to December 10, 2025. The primary outcome was the incidence of delirium. Secondary outcomes included postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), respiratory depression after extubation, extubation time and length of hospital stay. Subgroup and meta-regression analyse

Frequency of delirium in a neurological emergency room.

The authors present a cross-sectional survey designed to evaluate the presence of delirium in patients with neurological emergencies. Two hundred and two patients were included in the study: 14.9% of subjects had delirium; 62.4% had no arousal disturbances; and 22.7% presented a coma or stupor state. Findings revealed that the presence of a cerebral infection, the presence of multiple etiologies, and the location of lesions in the frontal and temporal lobes were all associated with delirium. Results substantiate that delirium is a frequent occurrence in neurological patients and that the prese

Nomogram-based prediction of emergence delirium in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery.

BACKGROUND: A nomogram model has been developed to forecast the incidence of emergence delirium (ED) in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed on the eMODIPOD trial, which involved elective laparoscopic surgery patients at Xiangya Hospital between October 2017 and October 2019. To assess ED, the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS) was combined with the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) scale, and patients were categorized as ED or non-ED based on the results. The two groups were compared in terms of perioperative information and test res

Remimazolam versus Sevoflurane for Paediatric Circumcision: A Randomised Controlled Trial Evaluating Emergence Delirium.

BACKGROUND: Emergence delirium complicates up to 40% of paediatric sevoflurane anaesthetics. Remimazolam is an ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine with organ-independent esterase metabolism, offering rapid and predictable recovery. We tested whether remimazolam monotherapy could serve as a volatile-free alternative to reduce emergence delirium. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomised, assessor-blinded trial (ChiCTR2500095974). One hundred children aged 3-12 years (ASA I-II) undergoing circumcision were randomised 1:1 to remimazolam (0.3 mg kg- 1 induction; 0.75 mg kg- 1 h- 1 maintenance

Global trends in research related to emergence delirium, 2012-2021: A bibliometric analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Emergence delirium is a kind of mental disorder during the early awakening period after general anesthesia, which is manifested as the combination of perceptual disturbance and psychomotor agitation. It is an independent risk factor for postoperative delirium and even long-term postoperative cognitive decline, which often affects the postoperative outcome and deserves the attention of clinical anesthesiologists. There are many studies on emergence delirium, but the quantity and quality of these studies are unclear. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of studies on eme
