Nationwide longitudinal population-based study on mortality in Italy by immigrant status.

A systematic analysis of the mortality of immigrant residents throughout Italy has never been carried out. The present study aimed to evaluate differences in mortality by immigrant status. A longitudinal study of the Italian resident population (native and immigrants) recorded in the 2011 National Institute of Statistics Census was conducted. This cohort was followed up from 2012 to 2018 until death, emigration, or end of the study period. The exposure variable was the immigrant status, measured through citizenship, dichotomized into Italian and immigrant. The main outcome was overall and caus

Rates of cancer incidence across terciles of the foreign-born population in Canada from 2001-2006.

OBJECTIVES: To address the issue of comparative risk of cancer in Canada's immigrant population, an area-based methodology was applied to examine whether or not estimated cancer incidence rates among individuals living in given areas vary systematically according to the concentration of foreign-born individuals living in the same area. This method provides an alternative, accessible surveillance method in the absence of linked individual-level information to extend the work of others by providing both national and subnational standardized, hence comparable, results to address this issue. A Community Standard: Equivalency of Healthcare in Australian Immigration Detention.

The Australian government has long maintained that the standard of healthcare provided in its immigration detention centres is broadly comparable with health services available within the Australian community. Drawing on the literature from prison healthcare, this article examines (1) whether the principle of equivalency is being applied in Australian immigration detention and (2) whether this standard of care is achievable given Australia's current policies. This article argues that the principle of equivalency is not being applied and that this standard of health and healthcare will remain u

Two-year follow up study of stress-related disorders among immigrants to Israel from the Chernobyl area.

We report on findings from a 2-year follow-up study of immigrants originating from exposed areas around the site of the 1986 Chernobyl accident matched with comparison subjects emigrating from other republics in the Confederation of Independent States. In the initial study of 708 immigrants, the samples were matched by age, gender, and year of immigration. We assessed two exposure groups--high and low--by estimating levels of ground cesium contamination from the International Atomic Energy Agency maps. We reinterviewed 520 immigrants from the first wave of data collection (a reinterview rate o

Schizophrenia among Surinamese in the Netherlands: high admission rates not explained by high emigration rates.

BACKGROUND: A high risk of schizophrenia has been found among Caribbean immigrants in the Netherlands and Great Britain. One hypothesis to explain these findings is that patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or patients with symptoms of psychosis not specifically diagnosed, emigrate more than the general population. Such selection might account for high rates of Surinamese patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia in Netherlands psychiatric hospitals. We examined this hypothesis. METHODS: The files of patients with schizophrenia or patients suffering from unspecified psychosis were sele

Factors Associated to the Onset of Mental Illness Among Hospitalized Migrants to Italy: A Chart Review.

Migration is a complex phenomenon and mental illness among immigrants remains a major matter of concern in Italy and worldwide. 243 medical and pharmacy records of patients admitted to University of Foggia hospital between 2004 and 2018 were retrospectively screened and included in the study. Socio-demographic data and clinical characteristics of inpatients were compared in those with and without first-episode of mental illness (FEMI). Subjects (140 men, 103 women; aged 34.4 ± 10.2 years) represented 6.66 ± 3.73% of all hospitalizations in 15 years. Nearly half of them (48.5%) had emigrated fr

Infantile acropustulosis in six immigrant children.

Infantile acropustulosis is a recurrent, pruriginous, vesiculopustular eruption of the palms and soles first described in 1979. We report six cases of infantile acropustulosis in recently emigrated children treated for scabies. Clinical follow-up was obtained by questionnaire addressed to patients' families and general practitioners. Our study suggests infantile acropustulosis is frequent in immigrant infants and could be a non-specific hypersensitivity reaction to Sarcoptes scabiei.

The economic returns to citizenship: Evidence from a meta-analysis.

Citizenship is widely summarized as producing a "naturalization premium" for immigrants, but naturalization is selected: immigrants who naturalize differ in language, residence, employment, and motivation. We provide a quantitative meta-analysis of citizenship effects on immigrant earnings, synthesizing 60 preferred estimates from 31 studies. How a study separates the effect of citizenship from selection into citizenship-its identification strategy-explains more variation in estimates than destination country, citizenship regime, or any other study feature we code. Functional anatomy of the thymic microenvironment.

This paper presents a review of our current understanding of the nature of the thymic microenvironment, after briefly considering the major role of the gland. The epithelial cells and their products are of fundamental importance, and other cells of the macrophage series are implicated in most functional events. The embryological origin of the epithelium is still not clear, although disease conditions would suggest a single origin. Immigration and emigration of thymocytes is considered, and also the passage of antigens into the gland. The events within the thymus are under the control of the CN

Multiple sclerosis among immigrants in Greater London.

Among immigrants resident in greater London from Europe, Ireland, the USSR, the old Commonwealth countries of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, North and South America, Egypt, Turkey, and Iran the incidence of admission to hospital for probable multiple sclerosis (MS) between 1960 and 1972 was high or moderately high. The incidence was the same order as that found in those born in the United Kingdom. Immigrants from India, Pakistan, and other Asian countries and from new Commonwealth Africa and America, which includes the West Indies, had a low incidence of hospital admission for MS. Immigra

Migration-Informed Cancer Equity: A Global Perspective.

Health equity is now a central aim of modern medicine, yet US cancer-prevention frameworks remain largely shaped by domestic policy histories and nationally bounded conceptions of disparity. While essential for addressing longstanding racial inequities, these frameworks often overlook malignancies driven by infection, geography, and early-life exposure-risks that are well characterized in global cancer epidemiology but imperfectly translated into domestic prevention strategies. As migration reshapes disease distribution, this misalignment leaves persistent gaps in the prevention of cancers suc

A model of collaborative immigration advocacy to prevent policy-based trauma and harm.

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests that antiimmigrant policies enacted in the United States, magnified during the 2016-2020 period, propagate widespread trauma across communities of immigrants (von Werthern et al., 2018). While these policies harm all groups of immigrants, structural conditions (e.g., lack of documentation status, race, ethnicity, country of origin, and other social and legal determinants) shape how they are experienced. To address the widespread traumatic harm inflicted by racist and xenophobic policies, a group of leaders from eight Divisions of the American Psychological Associat

The impact of migration on tuberculosis in the United States.

Due to greater exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection before migration, migrants moving to low-incidence settings can experience substantially higher tuberculosis (TB) rates than the native-born population. This review describes the impact of migration on TB epidemiology in the United States, and how the TB burden differs between US-born and non-US-born populations. The United States has a long history of receiving migrants from other parts of the world, and TB among non-US-born individuals now represents the majority of new TB cases. Based on an analysis of TB cases among individual

[FAMILY, IMMIGRATION AND QUALITY OF TREATMENT: GENETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS ON COMPLICATIONS IN DIABETES].

BACKGROUND: There is a variety of native and foreign-born diabetes patients from all over the world in Israel. A combination of genetic and acquired factors leads to high-rate spreading of diabetes mellitus. Consequently, certain differences exist in a number of features of the disease typical for Israeli-born patients and for immigrants. METHODS: This retrospective research has been conducted within a population of diabetes patients aged over 40 years in a group of immigrant and a group of Israeli-born patients (119 immigrants and 65 Israeli-born patients). Parameters checked were: backgroun

Can maturity indicators be used to estimate chronological age in children?

CONTEXT: There is widespread concern over the use of maturity indicators to estimate chronological age in children. OBJECTIVE: To review the definition of maturity indicators, the criteria governing their identification and use and the problems of their interpretation. METHODS: The development of maturity indicators, the criteria for their selection and the relationship of maturity to chronological age is critically reviewed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Maturity indicators are not related to the passage of chronological time, but to the progression of the individual from an immature to a matur

Psychiatric disorders in Sardinian immigrants to Paris: a comparison with Parisians and Sardinians resident in Sardinia.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to compare the prevalence of ICD-10 psychiatric disorders in a community sample of subjects of Sardinian origin resident in Paris (here "immigrants"), of the general Parisian population ("Parisians") and of Sardinians resident in Sardinia ("Sardinians"). METHODS: The sample of immigrants was obtained by contacting a fifth of all households with a Sardinian surname in Paris telephone directories. The other samples have already been partially described in previous studies. All subjects were interviewed using the CIDIS, a shortened version of the stru
